The Translator Ludvík Kundera
Nešporová, Jitka ; Veselá, Gabriela (advisor) ; Svoboda, Tomáš (referee) ; Munzar, Jiří (referee)
Jitka Nešporová doctoral thesis ABSTRACT The doctoral thesis focuses on the translation persona and work of Ludvík Kundera. A poet himself, he translated verse first and foremost and was able to do so from many languages, although he sometimes resorted to the use of interlinear translations. The research, however, concentrates primarily on the description, analysis and reception of his direct translations in the Czech - German language pair, which was predominant in Kundera's translation work. The thesis contributes to the understanding of the history of Czech literary translation after 1945 by describing Kundera's translation method, making accessible part of his literary estate, notably his correspondence, and providing an update to Kundera's translation bibliography. Kundera is best known as the exclusive, authorized translator of Bertolt Brecht's drama and poetry. His translations of Expressionists Georg Trakl and Gottfried Benn, for which he received the State Award for Literary Translation in 1996, are considered canonical today. The same holds true for his translations of Paul Celan's poetry and Alfred Kubin's novel Die andere Seite (The Other Side). Kundera was also the first to introduce Czech readers to the poetry of Alsatian Dadaist Hans Arp and the poetry of East German lyricist Peter Huchel....

The translated text inquires into the interconnection of the modern and constantly changing society. It looks at the understanding of the concept of cosmopolitanism throughout the history from the point of view of several cosmopolitan theories and it studies the influence the understanding has on people's behaviour. It puts into context concepts of cosmopolitanism, identity and translation and it highlights the role of translation as an irreplaceable "bridge" which mediates relationship of the global world and influences how we see individuals and groups whether it is on the level of ethnic, national or an international society. In relation to this it explores the place of an individual and a group in the complex global society and the differences in...

Náprstek, Marek ; Ženíšek, Jakub (advisor) ; Matuchová, Klára (referee)
This BA thesis is concerned with the translation of a part of the novel The Incredible Adam Spark written by a Scottish author Alan Bissett and its consequent stylistic analysis. This thesis deals mainly with the question of reproduction of a literary work in a different socio-cultural environment that it was created in, it discuses the achievable degree of objectivity and authenticity during the process of translation and finally it concentrates on the role of a translator as a mediator between the writer and the reader. One of the examined fields is also the question of the translator's involvement in the reformulation of the translated material, in other words, his role as a partial co-author, who is incapable of depersonalized transmission of information between the writer of the source text and its recipient. The thesis itself is divided into three main parts. First part provides theoretical framework dealing with the general question of the process of translation and its principles. Second part consists of the translation of a part of the text in question. Third part concludes by analysing the chosen procedures and encountered problems in relation to the theoretical framework mentioned above.
