Evolution of American Musical Theatre: A Sociological Perspective
Asimenou, Gavriella ; Sanders, Edel (advisor) ; Svoboda, Čeněk (referee)
THE EVOLUTION OF AMERICAN MUSICAL THEATER 3 Abstract In this paper I analyze the development of musical theatre through the social issues which pervaded society before and which continue to influence our society today. This thesis explores the link between the musicals of the times and concurrent problems such as the world wars, economic depression and racism. Choosing to base this analysis on the social problems of the United States, I tried to highlight the origins and development of the musical theatre art form by combining the influences which may have existed in humanity during the creation of each work. This paper includes research from books, journals, encyclopedias, and websites which together show similar results, that all things in life travel cycles, and that tendencies and patterns in society will unlikely change fundamentally, although it is hoped that the society will nonetheless evolve for the better. Perhaps the most powerful phenomena which will help people to escape from their sociological problems are music and theatre. Keywords: Musicals, Society,Culture.
The Mediatization of Rusalka - A Language Semiosis of the Opera and the Musical (A Comparative Semiotic Analysis)
Pavézková, Tereza ; Šoltys, Otakar (advisor) ; Podzimek, Jan (referee)
In this Master's thesis, I attempt to capture the disparate semiosis of two musical genres - a traditional opera, Rusalka, which has a unique position in Czech national music, and a musical of the same name. On the basis of theoretical findings from semiotics as a science, from the approaches of F. de Saussure, C. S. Peirce and R. Barthes, and by means of semiotic analysis, the thesis unravels semantic elements that are specific for theatrical art. Attention is directed at the symbol as a major tool for semiosis and the classification of symbols on the basis of Peirce's three ontological categories. The analysis focuses on decoding the semiotic systems used in the two genres (the libretto, the music, the characters, the story, and the technical and symbolic means that are employed). The analysis also deals with the question of intertextuality and the ideological background of the text, and attempts in this way to compare the differences and/or the similarities of diverse semiotic codes of the same class, and to capture their originality and specificity. At the same time, the thesis is focused on the dominant semiotic code of the two genres. This is, on the one hand, determined by the systemic distinctions between opera and musical theatre, while, on the other hand, it is primarily predetermined by...
Musical project as a means of self-fulfilment in gifted grammar school students
Borůvková, Markéta
The thesis discuses possibilities, ways and forms of self-realisation of talented grammar school students in staging of a musical project in an 8-year grammar school (specifically the Evita musical staged at Matiční gymnázium Ostrava, p.o.). The thesis finds out if the musical project conducted in this school environment is a suitable tool for self- realisation of gifted grammar school students. Further, it establishes the ways in which the self-realisation of the subjects takes place, which areas it concerns and last but not least which motivation and initiation stimuli there are for the activity in such project and active participation in it. In the theoretical part the work defines the fundamental terminology concerning the area of education, its typology, specification of tuition and raising of gifted individuals. Also, the text focuses at a potential of a musical as a genre and it summarizes presumptions thanks to which a musical as a synthetic form integrating several artistic components can become a suitable material for a project form of tuition in a school environment. The research part of the thesis builds upon an authentic exploratory survey and it is based upon an implementation of a particular musical work produced within a project tuition at an 8-year grammar school. The first stage...

Nováková, Kateřina ; Valášek, Marek (advisor) ; Pecháček, Stanislav (referee)
The diploma thesis deals with the field of musical theatre and specifies all the activities and competencies of a conductor throughout the process of preparation and subsequent realization of a musical performance. The text of the thesis consists of two parts. The theoretical part describes the characteristics of a musical, its brief world history and its integration into the Czech environment. It also maps the history of the Karlín Musical Theater and presents profiles of its current conductors. The aim of the theoretical part is to introduce the reader to the issues of this genre, to introduce its three basic components: music, drama and movement, and to point out the differences between classical musicals and those of a revue type. The second, practical part, focuses on the profession of conducting in the field of musical theatre. It demonstrates the specific activities of a conductor in two key genres of musical theatre: opera and musical. It also focuses on the means of expression a musical conductor works with, with a special emphasis on the tempo, which has been the subject of frequent discussions amongst members of different artistic components of the musical performance. In the following chapters, it introduces The Legend Called Holmes - The Musical, its script and its music genre. This...
