Monologue Plays in Contemporary British and Irish Theatre
Pavelková, Hana ; Pilný, Ondřej (advisor) ; Wallace, Clare (referee) ; Monks, Aoife (referee)
This dissertation examines a very popular and widespread trend in contemporary British and Irish theatre - monologue plays. One of the reasons of the recent boom of monologue-based theatre performances might be the fact that the condensed theatrical form presents a challenge for everyone involved - the playwrights, actors, and crucially also for the audience. The diversity and quantity of such plays present an obstacle that has deterred most theatre scholars from systematic analysis as it is difficult to decide on what ground such widespread phenomenon might be critically approached. Given the essential role the audience have as the only communication partner of the lonely monologists on stage, this work attempts to analyse the contemporary boom of monologue plays in the U.K. and Ireland by using a systematic framework, based on the various incorporations of the monologue, which enables examination of how specific strategies of the realisation of the monologue elicit audience engagement. First it explores monologue plays in which one actor/actress performs one character, then it deals with plays in which the performer re-enacts other characters, subsequently this work focuses on very rare experiments in the monologue form, where the performer re-enacts conflicting versions of their split selves and...

Šrámková, Karolína ; Velíšek, Martin (advisor) ; Kornatovský, Jiří (referee)

First, a word as part of a figurative expression, then an image assuming function that usually belongs to words. The second part is the main focus of the whole work, which is the diary as a medium dealing with both ways of expression. In the following chapters of the theoretical part, we are looking for the principles of diary in various examples of fine arts. Their definition opens up space for the author's - practical part. There are four different ways of the diary forms presented in practical part. The work experiments with expression between images and words to free diary from conventions and traditional ways. Similarly, the didactic part elaborates two innovative realized art projects. The first presents the concept of author identification with a fictitious character and its subsequent diary creation. In the second, the theme of the diary is demonstrated in form of a profile on the Facebook social network, which arises from the imaginary creation of an "updated artist". The master's thesis brings the original author's view into the interpretation of the visual arts through the principles of diary creation, their essence is subsequently documented and disseminated...

The poetics of selected plays by Roland Schimmelpfennig performed on Czech theatre stages in the context of the contemporary German-speaking theatre
Celárková, Michaela ; Augustová, Zuzana (advisor) ; Pšenička, Martin (referee)
This thesis presents the work of a contemporary German playwright Roland Schimmelpfennig in a wider context. In the main chapter, the author focuses on the analysis of five Schimmelpfennig's plays that have been performed also on Czech theatre stages. The analysis emphasizes the elements of a dramatic structure that Schimmelpfennig uses in an innovative way: epization of texts, unrealistic treatment of dramatic time, elements of magic realism etc. The author also pays attention to a general characteristic of a contemporary German-speaking theatre with respect to the topics that it deals with. A significant part of the work is devoted to classifying Roland Schimmelpfennig's work in the historical and theoretical context of a contemporary German-speaking theatre. A book called Die Rückkehr der Helden by a German author Nikolaus Frei, which questions some opinion on the recent development of theatre presented in a book Postdramatisches Theater by Hans Thiese Lehmann, has become a crucial source for this thesis. Nikolaus Frei copes with the question of animateness/inanimateness of theatre and by using extracts from particular dramatic texts by contemporary authors proves a possible continuity of mimesis, realistic acting and conflicts on the stage until the 21st century. In conclusion, it is possible...
