Political Talk Show as a construction of "regime of truth" in authoritative society
Semenova, Maiia ; Reifová, Irena (advisor) ; Štoll, Martin (referee)
In this diploma thesis I study the meaning-making discourse practices of the media in the post- modern time. Current social transformations, influenced by the questioning of the categorical certainty of the modern way capturing the world, inevitably raise questions about the effect of emerging forms of reality's representation on the formation of mediated public space. Whereas, the critical perspective, developed in the context of scientific research, considers the enhancement of the entertainment component in communication space as a failure of media institutions to fulfill the ideal of the public sphere, the second stream of thinking evaluates current transformations quite optimistically, because it regards television formats overflowing with emotional expressions as an emancipatory space that is open to marginal voices in society. Exactly the media genre of talk shows, as a very controversial format, necessarily attracts much attention in the outlined debate. However, it is developed primarily by liberal democratic societies, while the focus of the research is the analysis of the talk show from a Russian society based on authoritarian tradition. The post-Soviet transformation in the 1990s caused a loss of the previous foundations for the self-concept of the individual, which is why I am trying...
The White House Presents: The Media Image of Barack Obama
Seidlová, Kristýna ; Jirák, Jan (advisor) ; Zezulková, Markéta (referee)
The diploma thesis The White House Presents: The Media Image of Barack Obama examines the media presentation of the President of the United States, Barack Obama, through the official media channel of the White House. Five video recordings of President Obama's speeches are analyzed with a focus on linguistic, visual and auditory sign systems with the use of the qualitative semiotic content analysis. Before the analysis itself, an explanation of theoretical terms related mostly to the representation of reality is provided. On these grounds the analysis is then approached as a description of different means of achieving media construction of reality, to which both the President himself and the White House Office of Communications contribute. This Office is in charge of the content of the above-mentioned channel. To broaden the context, general information about the functioning of the President's media communication is included. The aim of this thesis is an interpretation of the communication tools presented by the White House media channel and the analysis of their symbolic meaning in order to explicate the process of a specific media image of the President coming into existence. The approach to the analyzed content from the perspective of intercultural communication is also of importance. It must be...
Media costruction of reality in reality TV
Christovová, Nela ; Kruml, Milan (advisor) ; Štoll, Martin (referee)
This thesis focuses on the manner how a phenomenon often called "media construction of reality" occurs in the Reality TV. This popular television genre is known for mixing reality captured on an omnipresent camera together with fiction elements in order to amuse the audience. In the theoretical part, I will focus on the concepts that are crucial for this phenomenon such as Berger's and Luckmann's social construction of reality, gatekeeping or agenda setting. Also, I will describe the history of Reality TV as a genre and also will focus on main subgenres that can be seen on television these days. In the practical part, I will use narrative analysis to identify how the media are constructing reality in television programmes. The sample for the analysis will consist of 80 episodes from 11 different TV shows of American and British production. These have already spread out of their country of origin and are familiar to Czech audience from local TV channels. My main thesis is that media construction of reality can happen from the very beginning - i.e. from rules establishing to shooting and postproduction. All these phases will be analyzed in this paper.

Mass media portrayal of Czech courts
Forejtová, Natálie ; Homolová, Pavla (advisor) ; Sedláčková, Markéta (referee)
This thesis focuses on the mass media portrayal of Czech courts in the context of the possible influence on the court's legitimacy and confidence. The research of portrayal is based on the analysis of Fagan's dimensions of legitimacy (effectiveness, distributive justice and procedural justice), court rulings and the overall view. The representation of sources of legitimacy rather corresponds to materialistic society - the most represented dimension in 2014 was the effectiveness, on the other hand, distributive justice was represented the least. Normative factors, namely procedural fairness, however, were not covered much. The portrayal in 2014 was, in terms of judicial rulings and the overall view, rather neutral but the sources of legitimacy were mostly negative. Differences were mainly found among mass media portrayal of the lower courts and higher courts and the differences correspond to different confidence in these institutions. I also studied the development since 1997, but besides the increasing interest of mass media in the courts, I have not found any other significant differences which could cause the rise of confidence in the courts. Mass media can also cause the difference in confidence in the courts of the left-wing and right-wing oriented people, because the journal Pravo has a slight...
Gender blending and queer performativity in the music videos of Lady Gaga
Sekyrová, Karolína ; Sloboda, Zdeněk (advisor) ; Martinová, Marta (referee)
This bachelor thesis examines how queer performativity and gender blending are shown in the music video clips of Lady Gaga. The thesis attemp to find and analyse through the means of the semiotic analysis and explain their meaning. The thesis is based on theoretical gender definition and on two constructivism concepts: Doing gender by West and Zimermann and gender performativity by Judith Butler. The thesis employs the queer concept as the reconstruction of sexual minorities but also as an analytic lens that deconstructs the normative social structure. The author defines the various elements leading to gender blending and queer performativity in four music videos clips and concluded that Lady Gaga repeatedly violates gender stereotypes and disturbs the majority view on heteronormative social settings by using specific videos elements representing different kinds of sexuality in her music videos.
Construction of the imagination of the First republic from the point of view of two generations explained by an example of the czech TV series "First republic"
Hložková, Dominika ; Baslarová, Iva (advisor) ; Reifová, Irena (referee)
The diploma thesis "Construction of the imagination of the first republic era from the point of view of two generations explained by an example of the Czech TV series První republika" focuses on the mechanisms in which the TV series co-constructs the audience perception of the given era. The series was broadcasted from January 2014 untill June 2014 on the Czech Televisions program. The thesis aims to show how the younger generations of TV viewers construct the period in which they did not live through their consuming of media content. This is compared with the old-timers who could compare their own experience with the series. The audiences of both generations are equally scrutinized and consequently compared. The theoretical part introduces the theses about social and media construction of reality accompanied by audience cultivation theories. The final analysis of the acquired data is based on these theories but it aims to invent a new hypothesis. The subject matter of the research part is analysed by the qualitative method of the grounded theory as Strauss and Glaser understand it. For the questioning the semistructured and group interviews were used .

Maxa, Martin ; Hejlová, Denisa (advisor) ; Vochocová, Lenka (referee)
This diploma thesis focuses on the process of designing a luxurious lifestyle within the proč ne?! magazine. The theme aims to analyze the year's activities at several levels. The first level is a quantitative content analysis, where the primary objective is to determine the ratio of advertising to editorial content. Based on these quantitative findings the magazine's content will be confronted with the ownership structure of major advertisers. The second level is represented by expert interviews carried out with the magazine editors who bring valuable additional material. The third level is a qualitative content analysis which focuses on a luxury lifestyle that is constructed through the magazine. This luxury lifestyle will be described through various selected examples of textual and pictorial character. Theoretical introduction provides a broader framework in which the concept of luxury is described. In practical part of the thesis, these findings are used to explain several luxury phenomenons. The final part offers a detailed analysis of the advertiser's structure, their products and stratification within segments of the luxury market through comprehensive visualization.
Media Representation of Prague ZOO
Vojtová, Magdaléna ; Jirák, Jan (advisor) ; Dorčáková, Jana (referee)
The main aim of the bachelor thesis "Media Representation of Prague ZOO" is to analyze and describe the media representation of this institution in daily newspapers BLESK, MF DNES and Pravo in the period from 1st January 2009 to 31st December 2011. The theoretical part of this thesis deals with media concepts and theories, primarily with concept of representation, stereotyping and media construction of reality. This part also serves as a platform, which anchors the following practical part. In practical part, first, I introduce the method of quantitative content analysis and the specific procedure I have chosen. Then I present the results of my research and their interpretation. The data evaluation confirms the main hypothesis, that the media representation of Prague ZOO is associated with the family of lowland gorillas, which lives there. We can say, that representation of Prague ZOO in media is created in very stereotypical framework, which has not changed in the monitored period and we can not expect any change in the near future.
