Recurrent topics in Nick Cave's lyrics and prose

The aim of this thesis is to compare Nick Cave's lyrics with his prosaic work, especially the novel And the Ass Saw the Angel. It focuses on the main topics covered in his work, such as love, sadness, suffering, death, murder, violence, music, drugs, sex and religion. The topic are observed in relation to the lyrical or epic elements of the text. There are many parallels in his novels that relate to his lifestyle as a musician and a performer.

Surrealism of the "Écrits Bruts": Comparison of André Breton's and Jeanne Tripier's Poetics of Madness

This dissertation is focused on phenomenon of madness in French surrealism and genre called "écrits bruts". The main theme is confrontation of surrealism aesthetics madness with written production of psychotic and mostly schizophrenic patients. The primary outcome is presented by analysis and interpretation of two chosen literary works, which are collection of experimental poetry by André Breton and Paul Éluard called L'Immaculée conception (Immaculate Conception, 1930) and diary entries, known as Premier Cahier: de l'ordre des messages, mai 1935, written by one of the most significant French women representatives Jeanne Tripier,. The aim of this analysis is on one hand to identify and characterize forms through which simulated and "real" madness in texts presented are, and on the other hand to describe its poetic function. The methodology part is based on structural and genre analysis of both aforementioned movements and moreover is formed on outcomes of the phenomenologically oriented psychiatry and psychoanalysis.

Thematics of madness in the tales of Guy de Maupassant

The main aim of this bachelor's thesis is to determine by which literary means Guy de Maupassant (1850 1893) portrays the theme of madness in his tales. This theme is associated with the genre of fantastic novel in the 19th century, but also with his own life. At the beginning, his life and his literary creation are presented. Then it is focused on the genre of the fantastic tales and novellas. The most important part of this thesis is the analysis of the selected texts which contain the element of madness. This analysis identifies motives typical for the characters, settings and plots of the selected texts. The obtained knowledge is summarised in the conclusion of the thesis. The whole thesis is written in French.

The victim or the threat: representations of madness in the Czech Film and Television thriller from 60th to 80th years

The subject of this thesis is the way of representation of mentally ill characters in the Czech detective movies made between 60s and 80s. The characters with elements of mental illness or other abnormalities are analyzed in the semiotic analysis. Subsequently, the results are complemented by narrative analysis which focuses on the role of selected characters in the story, style, storyline and the overall impression of mentally ill characters. The aim of this thesis is to gain a wider awareness of madness representation and also to provide more comprehensive information about the characteristics of analyzed characters. The first part of the thesis focuses on a theoretical background essential for subsequent analysis - media representation, construction of reality, stereotypes, new wave cinema, normalization, history of madness. The second part of the thesis is dedicated to analysis of 10 movies and interpretation of the results.

Robert Burton: Melancholy in Early Modern European Society

The aim of this thesis is to provide a close reading and a philosophical and anthropological interpretation of Burton's understanding of the concept of melancholy (as well as the concept of the human being and the world) as it is presented in his work The Anatomy of Melancholy. The primary objective will be gradually to respond to the following questions: How did Burton perceive the concept of melancholy? How did he make use of it within his notion of the melancholic world? Based on this, his vision of a remedy to the melancholic disease afflicting the whole world, together with the form of this treatment presented in The Anatomy of Melancholy will be thereafter shown and explained. This task will be preceded by an analysis situated on the edge between the history of ideas and intellectual history, cultural history, and philosophical anthropology with a small overlap with the history of mentalities. This analysis will firstly reveal the diversity and rich history of the concept of melancholy and, subsequently, open up the intellectual milieu and ideas which form the basis of Burton's notion of the problem of the melancholic world and its treatment. The phenomen of madness in Don Quijote de la Mancha and its time

(in English) Initially this Bachelor Degree Thesis studies the conception of the phenomenon of madness through different centuries. It analyses the ancient tradition of the medical aspect of this concept and it also elaborates in detail its symbolism in the so-called culture of folk humor. These dimensions, which evolved mostly in the Renaissance period, are explored due to its influence on meaning of madness in the masterpiece of Miguel de Cervantes The Ingenious Gentleman Don Quixote of La Mancha. Some other relevant pieces of art and literary works, which could have potential influence on the Cervantes' book, are also expounded. Finally, the existent interpretations of don Quixote's madness are summarized.
