The world of Kitsch and possibilities of Eco`s Semiotics of Mass Communication
Sedláková, Anna ; Borecký, Felix (advisor) ; Švantner, Martin (referee)
This diploma thesis explores the phenomenon of kitsch. One of the aims of the thesis is to address significant theories (H. Broch, M. Kundera, P. Rezek and T. Kulka) and to analyze them further in relation to the central concept of Umberto Eco, which defines kitsch as a communication. According to Eco, kitsch is not to be defined solely by the structural qualities of the work, but also by the intention that the author creates and by the means that the work is later perceived by the audience. The focus of this thesis is to be pointed not on the kitsch as a definition of a certain type of object and its aesthetic evaluation, but rather on the attitudes and interpretations that transform objects and thoughts into kitsch. Another aim of the thesis is to mark a possible shift in conception of kitsch in context of the changes brought by the age of new media - the changes that radically change the ways of communication, and the organization of society, too. Such change proposes the use of kitsch both as an emotional and simplifying approach. Kitsch, in its wider conception, becomes a pervasive and actual phenomenon. In addition to the characteristics of new media, the thesis uses the concept of Cyberculture by Pierre Lévy and the Liquid Times theory of Zygmunt Bauman. In its conclusion, the thesis attempts to...
A system for classifying descriptions of society in the era of fall of postmodernism
Krčil, David ; Hauser, Michael (advisor) ; Horáková, Hana (referee)
The thesis deals with the comparison and classification of descriptive theories that seek to describe the state of Western society and culture in the 21st century. In this context, the most frequently invoked term is "postmodernism", which according to many thinkers has already lost its ability to describe society or, according to others, has never even truly described it. This paper is concerned with those theories that are supposed to be either the successors to postmodernism or its surrogate. The research question of the thesis is whether it is possible to find points of contact between the chosen theories, on the basis of which they could be sorted into hyperonymic groups (meta-descriptions) as to map the contemporary thinking about the historical stage of the West in the 21st century. A classification of this kind is potentially fruitful for creating a map of contemporary modes of thinking about society, and the categories delineated should prove to be inherently open for quickly linking emerging theories, or those not included in this thesis, to similar descriptions of society so that their findings can be compared. To lay the foundations for this purpose, the theories of Timothee Vermeulen and Robin van den Akker's metamodernism, Jeffrey Nealon's post-postmodernism, Alan Kirby's...

Procrastination and time management among college students
Trešlová, Debora ; Hrešanová, Ema (advisor) ; Šrám, Kristián (referee)
This bachelor thesis deals with procrastination and time management among college students. I focus specifically on five students from the Faculty of Social Sciences, five students from the Second Faculty of Medicine and five students from the Faculty of Law. All of the above mentioned faculties are part of Charles University in Prague. The aim of my work was to find out what procrastination and time management tell us about trends in contemporary society and how it is related to its transformation. The data was collected using semi-structured interviews and than analyzed using thematic analysis. The six categories that emerged showed that students most often procrastinate if they are not sure about the instruction of assignments, about their field of study or overall having clearly defined life goals. Student do not usually manage their time. Their day-to-day activities are based on clearly defined hours at work or at school. Additionally, communication technologies have relevant impact on students' procrastionation, esspecially Facebook and other social networks. Using the book The Liquid Modernity of Zygmunt Bauman I make findings in the context of social transformation as part of the transition from solid modernity to liquid modernity.
