The Globalization and the Cosmopolitan Theory of Democracy

This thesis is concerned with possibility of a cosmopolitan approach to democracy in the world changed by processes of globalization. The issue of globalization is analyzed from the perspective of three contemporary sociologists - Ulrich Beck, Anthony Giddens and Jan Keller. It will be shown in which way economic, cultural and political globalization changes rules of world politics. A modern concept of democracy traditionally assumed the nation-state framework, however nation-states are no longer able to react adequately to the global dimension of contemporary world issues. This fact allows thesis to open up a concept of cosmopolitanism that has ambitions to expand democratic governance at the global level. First this thesis will introduce Kant's cosmopolitan proposition of international legal order - a voluntary league of states. According to Kant, a perpetual peace can be achieved through realization of three spheres of public law: constitutional law, international law and cosmopolitan law. Many authors responded to Kant's position, each of them in a quite different way. In The Law of Peoples John Rawls proposes a political conception of right and justice that applies strictly to the principles and norms of international law. Anti-patrioten, Traitors, Murderers in white cloaks. The image of "The Jew" as an "enemy" in the propaganda of late stalinism

The period of late Stalinism (1948-1953) witnessed sharp rise of anti-Jewish animosity and discrimination from the part of the Soviet regime. These tensions were caused by both domestic factors (ideological diversification of Soviet intellectual elite, escalation of Jewish nationalism, struggle for power among highest nomenclature) as well as international factors (transformation of the Soviet-Israeli relations, rise of the Cold War). The thesis analyzes, how these circumstances were reflected at that time. Therefore it tries to identify, how the image of "The Jude" was formed by the Soviet propaganda and how it changed in the given time period. As a general framework for this analysis the concept of "The Enemy" will serve which is considered to be one of the basic elements of totalitarian ideologies. The thesis examines by means of semiotic method two significant propaganda campaigns of that period, namely campaign against the "cosmopolitism" in January - March 1949 and campaign accompanying "The Doctors' Plot" during January - March 1953. It would try to identify, how the image of "The Enemy" was connected at that time with the notion of "The Jew".

Global Dimension of Rawls' Theory of Justice

This thesis is concerned with mapping one of the most topical discussions in the field of modern political philosophy, namely the contention about the existence, nature and extent of justice in the era of a highly globalised world. However, the clash about the existence of global justice, hitherto referred to as the clash between cosmopolitans and internationalists, is not viewed in its entirety. More specifically, this thesis aspires to make an introduction into the debate against the background of one of the most influential philosophical works of the 20th century which has significantly contributed to the delimitation of the term "justice"- Theory of Justice by John Rawls. This book incited joyful reaction from a number of cosmopolitan theorists, including most notably Charles Beitz and Thomas Pogge, who perceived it as a clear attempt at extending traditionally liberal ideals and precepts beyond the scope of nation states. The difference principle in particular caught their attention as it represented a suitable way of facilitating the ideal of social justice at global level. Nonetheless, Rawls himself rejected cosmopolitan claims. This bachelor thesis comprises a translation of a part of a book called Translation and Identity by Michael Cronin, published in 2006 and a commentary on the translation. The commentary includes translation analysis of the original text, examples of translation problems with solutions and typology of translation shifts. The analysis was based on the model of Ch. Nord and the translation method was inspired by translation theory of J. Levý and partly also by the theory of P. Newmark. The translation shifts were based on the theory of A. Popovič. The translated text inquires into the interconnection of the modern and constantly changing society. It looks at the understanding of the concept of cosmopolitanism throughout the history from the point of view of several cosmopolitan theories and it studies the influence the understanding has on people's behaviour. It puts into context concepts of cosmopolitanism, identity and translation and it highlights the role of translation as an irreplaceable "bridge" which mediates relationship of the global world and influences how we see individuals and groups whether it is on the level of ethnic, national or an international society. Guests and Hosts: Tourist Interactions in the Istrian Pension Lucia

The master's thesis explores the process in which tourist interactions between hosts and guests develop and sheds some light on tourism imaginaries by which these interactions are constructed and produced in an Istrian pension. The ethnography of hosts and guests presented here illustrates how the global and the local are closely intertwined through the process called glocalization (Salazar, 2005) and shows that "the global not only affects, but becomes the local, and vice versa". (Leite, Graburn in Jamal, Robinson ed., 2009: 53) The thesis shows how both the global and the local can take an active part in the process of new meaning-making in the context of tourism. In the pension, there is an ongoing local struggle over tourism imaginaries seeking to redefine the place and people. (Salazar, 2012) The thesis reveals that hosts cannot be viewed as passive victims of their hosts' expectations. They rather can be viewed as active negotiators, negotiating their position in the field of tourism. Cultural Omnivorousness among Charles University Students

This thesis looks at the structure of cultural consumption among students of first and second year at Charles University with a focus on evaluation of the cultural omnivore thesis. According to the cultural omnivore thesis, the homology of cultural consumption and social class described by Pierre Bourdieu is no longer valid. The homology of social class and culture is supposedly being replaced by the eclectic cultural consumption of upper classes broadening their cultural consumption from the highbrow culture to middle- and lowbrow culture alike. In the first portion of the thesis, the author locates the cultural omnivorousness within the sociological context and provides an overview of existing research on the phenomenon of cultural omnivorousness. The author aims to examine, whether cultural omnivores among students of Charles University share other characteristics commonly associated with cultural omnivores, such as upper-class affiliation, political tolerance, and cosmopolitanism. Quantitative analysis of secondary data focused on cultural consumption allows to examine social class through parent's education and a battery of question on economic situation. S U M M A R Y This submitted dissertation thesis deals with the problematics of social cohesion through effects analysis of cultural values on the development of social and political relations in a society as such. The efforts of the thesis are not only directed towards articulation of Rawls's principals of justice, but they also reveal the desire to connect with the topic of the basic human rights from which questions of a suitable concept of societies derive. It actually means that the suitable concept in which it would be possible to achieve, from the point of view of intersubjective relations, a sufficient level of social cohesion and that way to strengthen an important factor for sustainability of social relations in societies as such. From the point of view of methodology, these thesis are for sufficient review as well as easier orientation in the whole work divided into 4 parts, which split further into 5 chapters.
