Cochlear implantation in prelingually deaf children from the perspective of people with hearing loss

This diploma thesis takes a look at cochlear implantation in prelingually deaf children from the view of adults with hearing loss. Although most hearing parents would most likely make use of the option to at least partially restore the hearing of their non-hearing child, that may not be the only possible solution for people with hearing loss. The aim of this thesis is to map and to clarify the views and opinions of people with hearing loss on cochlear implantation in prelingually non-hearing children. This thesis highlights the link between cochlear implants and the Deaf culture and community, where the topic of cochlear implantation is often controversial. The theoretical section introduces key topics regarding the aim of this thesis, especially the association between hearing loss and the Deaf community, communication of people with hearing loss, while also introducing basic information about cochlear implantation. In the practical section of the thesis, as part of the qualitative research, the statements of eleven respondents are quoted, which were obtained in the form of semi- structured interviews in Czech Sign Language. Technical aspects of cochlear implants in people with severe hearing impairment

The objective of this work is to specify the technical aspects of cochlear implants in relationship to their impact on their users. The main contribution of this work is that through the description of individual parts of an implant and of the substance of its operation it draws attention to the impact of its usage on the user themselves. Simultaneously, by describing the current news in the area of cochlear implants it draws attention to the continuous development of this neuroprotheses and its elements. The bachelor's thesis is aimed at the division of individual parts of the cochlear implant and their technical specifications. In the thesis the core of the sound transmission and the operation of the implant and its adjusting are described. The attention is paid to the selection of the users of cochlear implants and approach of the community of the deaf people to this compensation aid. Limitations in the cochlear implant users form another part of this work. The individual theoretical pieces of information are interspersed with testimonies of the users themselves who express their attitudes and experience in individual areas of everyday life. The role of boarding schools for the Deaf in the Czech Republic - since 1786 to present days

(in English): This bachelor thesis presents the history and development of institutional care at the Czech boarding schools for the hearing impaired, as well as at the then institutes for the Deaf and dumb from 1786 to present. It describes the regime at these boarding schools, extracurricular activities of the pupils, pedagogical supervision and the schools facilities. The school regime is dealt with according to centuries. The bachelor work also brings up the issue of the Deaf communities, both home and abroad and explores the impact of the boarding schools on the community. The findings are interpreted in the light of individual development of the child staying in a boarding school, namely its impact on child's personality. The work draws data from the specialized past and present bibliography, legislative norms and other relevant documents. The final part of the bachelor thesis presents the results of the findings concerning the issue of hearing impaired children in residential care. They prove that children staying in boarding schools suffer from deprivation which is, furthermore, enhanced in case of deaf children who lack an opportunity to communicate in their mother tongue, i.e. sign language with the peers. They neither have a contact with their surrounding, nor are exposed to every day...
Primary school pupils awareness of Deaf community

The diploma thesis is elaborated on the topic of awareness of primary school pupils about the Deaf community, in general about people with hearing impairment. The aim of the work is obtain information about how students are informed about the issue of the Deaf community and to increase this knowledge using research methods. The theoretical part is focused on a general introduction to the issue of people with hearing impairment, the division of hearing impairments, terms used in this field, as well as on the communication of people with hearing impairment and compensatory aids. One of the chapters then brings important knowledge about the Deaf community, their culture and also about several organizations associating people with hearing impairments in general and their surroundings. The next chapter deals with the possibilities of obtaining information about the culture of the Deaf, while the work lists the Internet, magazines, lectures and sign language courses as sources of information. Its subchapter then specifically focuses on the possibilities of obtaining this information by primary school pupils and specific attempts to inform this age group that have taken place in the past. Persons with hearing disability and music

The main theme of this bachelor thesis is the issue of people with hearing impairment and also music. It is about the positive effects of music on their person. In the theoretical part I mainly work on information about hearing impairment and its causes. Classification of hearing impairments follows. Another part of this section is historical knowledge, I mean access to disabled people in history. It is also important to mention the emergence of communication systems for people with hearing impairment and some information about people from Deaf community. An important chapter is the issue of children with hearing disorders here I describe problems in development of children with hearing disabilities. I will also mention a brief look at the situation in family of children with disabilities and eventually their educational possibilities. The next part is music and its curative effects in music therapy. I also present possible positive effects of music on people with disabilities especially the hearing impairment. In the practical part is research of five specific children with hearing disabilities. It contains processed case reports of children, research tasks and the course of their performance and results. There are also pictures of children taken during the research At the end of the thesis there is a summary of the whole work, the literature used for the work and the attachments.

The Identity of Czech Deaf Roma

With the definition of Deaf people as a cultural and linguistic minority the research of Deaf identity became possible. Following this, questions of identity of minority deaf persons emerged. Do these persons affiliate to the Deaf community or to their ethnic minority? This bachelor thesis focuses on the topic of Czech deaf Roma identity. The underlying assumption of the paper is that identity is a continuing process dependent on the interaction of an individual and society and that it constitutes of various levels different form each other. The research the thesis is based on aimed to collect data about experience, opinions and attitudes of deaf Roma. In analyzing the collected data, the process of identity development in these individuals was explored. Deaf community and Deaf culture is described from different perspectives and the results of present research of deaf minority members is summarized in this thesis.
