Use of aorist, imperfect and perfect in Czech prose in the middle of the 14th century

This thesis deals with the use of the aorist and imperfect tenses and the periphrastic preterite in four Old Czech prosaic translated texts dated back to the beginning of the 2nd half of the 14th century. Analyzed texts are the part of the first edition of the Old Czech translation of the Bible (part of the Dresden Bible completed with the text of Proroci rožmberští (Prophets of Rožmberk), the Legend of St. Wenceslaus from The Old Czech Passional, The Apocalypse of Paul and two chapters of the text O svatém Jeronýmovi knihy troje. We deal with the percentual occurence of the verb forms under investigation and with the aspectual characteristics of the verbs of which the investigated forms are constructed. Also their relationship to the Latin pretext is examined. The acquired results are presented in tables and graphs. This thesis also includes an electronic database of the investigated verbal forms.

Linguistic and Literary Analysis of Old Bohemian Composition Tristram and Izalda

This diploma thesis deals with an analysis of Old Czech poem Tristram and Izalda. The source of the analysed text is the Strahov manuscript dated to 1449, in edition by Zdeňka Tichá. The thesis includes a brief description of the history and origin of the analysed piece in both European and especially Czech literary context. The main focus of this text is the linguistic analysis of selected language phenomena. That comprises of phonological and morphological evolution of most grammar categories of nouns, adjectives and verbs in Czech language. With nouns and adjectives, the thesis focuses on the declination paradigm, specifically on the system of grammatical cases and the animacy of the masculine gender. With verbs, the attention is given to the analysis of the tenses, with emphasis on the simple past tenses. First and foremost, the thesis focuses on the analysis of the aorist and imperfect tense with emphasis on verbal aspect affiliation, from which these tenses are often created. A part of the work is dedicated to the preterite, the compound past tense. Where individual verbal forms are analysed, the main focus is given to the nt- and s- participles, their suffix system and also the connection to the category of verbal aspect. Many distinct examples from the analysed text are provided throughout the thesis, as well as detailed statistic data on the occurrence frequency of selected phenomena

Analysis of the use of simple past in contrast to the present perfect in contemporary spoken Italian

This bachelor thesis focuses on observing the use of "passato prossimo" and "passato remoto" past tenses in contemporary speaking Italian. It is focused on both already mentioned tenses and then also on the comparison with perfect tense. Speech is also introduced in the thesis in necessary extent. Thesis deals with inconsistent use of tenses mentioned above and it shows it is not always used according to grammar rules. It looks into the reason why native speakers tend to use tenses differently, even if they talk about the same historical event or an influential person and if there are any rules or circumstances showing why native speakers tend to use particular tenses. More frequently used tense "passato remoto" differs from theories stated in various textbooks and grammars,which define this past tense as a tense in "decay" used mostly in books or used by inhabitants of southern part of the country. Questionnaire which is applied on native speakers is the reason why this thesis keeps progressing and is the main pillar of this thesis. Research also consists of watching documentaries and interviews, in which both of the tenses occur and subsequently the results are individually analyzed.

Modal/temporal functions of paradigm hablaba in contemporary Spanish

The aim of this thesis is to introduce modotemporal functions of paradigm hablaba in Spanish. In the theoretical part, we define basic concepts related to this theme and the basic functions of paradigm hablaba. Then we describe functions that are less typical for the given paradigm. We designate these functions as modal meanings and we pay most attention to them. We describe them mainly from the semantic point of view and we also introduce different kinds of theories, which try to explain these meanings. In the practical part, using parallel corpus InterCorp, we analyze the meanings of the paradigm hablaba in the selected occurrences and we introduce the examples of some sentences proving the statements from the theoretical part of the thesis. Past tense in the works of Albert Camus in terms of translation

The master's thesis examines the meaning of the past tenses used by Albert Camus in his novels The Stranger and The Fall and the possibility of their transfer to Czech. The present thesis takes a theoretical and empirical approach. The theoretical part provides an overview of the French past tenses and their meanings and deals with their functions within the narrative text. It also attempts to express the specific use of French past tenses in Camus's works analysed. The thesis does not omit describe the possibilities that the Czech language has to express the past. The empirical part is devoted to the analysis of the existing Czech translations of the novels The Stranger and The Fall with an emphasis on capturing the meanings of the past tenses defined in the theoretical part. Using the Czech translations, it seeks ways of creating equivalent effects in Czech and compares the translators' approaches. Function of verb paradigms of "hablara" a "hablase" in Present-Day Spanish

This theses is dedicated to the use of the verbal paradigms hablara and hablase in contemporary Spanish. We demonstrate that due to historical reasons the usage of paradigm hablara is much wider than that of hablase, which can be used only in the subjunctive meaning. According to the valid linguistic norm, the paradigm hablara (and not hablase) can be used instead of the Past Perfect (although it is not recommended). The same is evidenced with the conditional tense of the modal verbs querer, deber and poder as well as with the main clause of the unreal conditional clauses in the present tense. This means that these two verb paradigms can be arbitralily substituted only when used in the subjunctive function. On the basis of our own frecuency analysis of twenty most used Spanish verbs in the language corpus CREA, we prove that the frecuency of the hablase on average 18% in Spain and 10% in Latin America. Our analysis of this corpus material does not confirm the statement of some linguists that the frecuency of -se form is generally slightly higher in negative sentences. However, our analysis of a parallel corpus InterCorp seems to indicate that it is higher (by 7%) after the conditional conjunction ‚si'.

The Italian imperfect

The thesis focuses on the Italian Imperfect tense, and the main emphasis is given to its modal use. The first part of the thesis presents the Imperfect in its temporal use, then a limit between the temporal use and the modal one is set. The next part is completely dedicated to situations where the Imperfect attains its modal character. An important quality of the Imperfect tense is the imperfective aspect and therefore it is considered in the thesis as well. The final part tries to find an answer to the huge flexibility and such a strong inclination of the Imperfect to modal uses.
