Aristocratic disputes over honour in the early modern period
PINTNER, Tomáš
The bachelor thesis focuses on the topic of disputes over honour in the early modern period. It aims to present a comprehensible portrayal of the concept of honour and its social value between the years 1527-1627 in the Kingdom of Bohemia. Honour had slightly dissimilar worth in the lives of various groups of people of different social statuses, and it was an inseparable part of noblemen's identity. Its importance was reflected in legal norms, for there were explicitly defined offences against honour. Losing honour meant social segregation, and for that reason, one had to defend himself - either by legal means or by using violence. The thesis will further explore the second option, the duel, and its place in the early modern culture. Moreover, some representative examples of duels, European fencing trends of the 16th century, and weapon regulations of the period will be introduced. Finally, the thesis will be concluded with the analysis of the duel between Mikuláš Dačický of Heslov and Felix Novohradský of Kolovrat from 1582 and its legal consequences.

Šatánková, Radana ; Matějek, Jaromír (advisor) ; Štica, Petr (referee)
This interdisciplinary thesis deals with the area of investigative journalism and ethics. In the context of our time it offers a look at what kind of information a citizen has the right to obtain and what kind of the published information violates the moral rights of the individual. The work depicts the professional and ethical requirements placed on workers in the media to indicate the boundaries between "investigative journalism" and the pursuit of sensation. I draw upon the core material of the Syndicate of Journalists of the Czech Republic, the ethical codes of our public and private media and the books of experts in the field of media studies and ethics.

in English Selected issues of legal and social status of executioners in the Bohemian lands from the 16th to the middle of the 19th century from a legal historical perspective The aim of this thesis is to comprehensively elaborate the legal and social situation of executioners and knackers in the Bohemian lands from the 16th to the middle of the 19th century. In particular, the specific rules and restrictions that applied to executioners, based on the legal regulations and decisions of the public authorities, as well as on the general social situation and the attitude of individual persons. The thesis also describes some myths and prejudices concerning executioners and compares them with reality. An important aspect is the concept of honour and its influence on everyday life, as well as the impact of its reduction. Also important are the exceptions to the various rules and the reasons or possible reasons for those exceptions. The thesis achieves these goals mainly by the method of deduction and induction using historical sources and legal regulations. It also compares the legal regulations with public authorities decisions and real situations. This reveals which norms were followed and which were rather overcome by the social aspects of dishonour. Grammatical, historical and comparative...

Fights of Roma Teenagers Cultural Models of Violence
Trachtová, Zuzana ; Bittnerová, Dana (advisor) ; Abu Ghosh, Yasar (referee)
This thesis focuses on the meaning of violence within groups of Roma youth. It discusses questions regarding how they understand, verbalise and reflect on violence. Answers to these questions presented in the work are based on long-term communication with Roma teenagers visiting a low-threshold club, where I worked. Afterwards, the research was carried out outside the club, in their private space and also in a boxing club. The Roma teenagers formed a fixed group, identifying themselves with a particular Prague district. The dialogues revealed an interesting topic of "fights" among Roma groups coming from different Prague districts. The aim of the thesis is to provide answers to the questions what teenagers are actually saying when they are talking about "fighting" one another, how they assess such behaviour and what meanings it carries for them. The theoretical part presents definitional frameworks concerning the term of violence as well as the concept of physical violence appearing in different socio-scientific contexts. In literature, violence is often referred to in connection with young people, gender, masculinity, social exclusion and honour. Furthermore, this part concentrates on defining the Roma minority and outlining their situation in Prague and the Czech Republic. The theoretical and...
Aided Derbforgaill: Recurrent motifs in Early Irish Literature and their Relation to the Status of Women
Němečková, Hana ; Markus, Radvan (advisor) ; Pilný, Ondřej (referee)
THESIS ABSTRACT The main focus of this thesis is the examination of the representation of women in the Ulster Cycle, especially in the instances where they cross the boundaries of their gender and participate in activities usually associated with the world of heroes and kings, such as bragging and competitions to establish one's highest status. As the recurrent motifs in the Ulster Cycle are numerous, this thesis discusses only those present in The Violent Death of Derbforgaill (Aided Derbforgaill), a short yet moving tale about a violent death of the female protagonist. The motifs include bragging, competitions, violence, love-triangles and deaths caused either by jealousy or a strong emotion, but perhaps the most surprising of them all is the motif of urination, which also appears in the longest epic of the Ulster Cycle, The Cattle Raid of Cooley (Táin Bó Cuilnge). Special attention is paid to the way how these transgressions influence the honour of women in the heroic society, as well as to the notion of women's honour itself, e.g. to what extent is their honour dependent on their husbands, what qualities are honoured in aristocratic women and whether the female characters tend to accept their secondary position in the society. A useful comparison is provided by the examples of Otherworldly women, as...
The theme of honour in novella in the first half of the 17th century
Fousková, Barbora ; Sánchez Fernández, Juan Antonio (advisor) ; Poláková, Dora (referee)
Key words novella, honour, Baroque, woman, society Abstract The main subject of this thesis is the theme of honour. Unlike my previous study, The theme of honour in the Spanish theatre of the XVI and XVII centuries, this work focuses on the literary genre of the novella and it will be interested in honour of women. Woman's honour is one of the great themes, which played a part of literary output of every author at that time. The work will be based on particular literary works, as well as historical context. Because of this, the first part gives literary-theoretical and socio-historical context. This section has as its purpose to introduce the theory of the Spanish Renaissance and Baroque novella, as well as the social status of women in the society of the 17th century. The second part treats the honour of women in the literary context, and relies on selected texts of various significant authors. How the second part will show us, in spite of relative dogmatism and conservatism of Baroque society, every author in his texts offers a different vision and especially different solutions. The main objective of this thesis is capture and describe the multiplicity of attitudes to the universal theme of honour.
Honour and virtue in signo temporis. On examples of female figures in G. E. Lessings's, F. Hebbel's and A. Schnitzler's works.
Poláčková, Zuzana ; Zbytovský, Štěpán (advisor) ; Weinberg, Manfred (referee)
The subject of this thesis was virtue and honour in signo temporis. It means that I've tried to focus on the concept of virtue and honour in a certain time period. I have chosen three different literary periods and three works as their representatives. It was the bourgeois tragedy "Emilia Galotti" by Gotthold Ephraim Lessing, as the representative of the Enlightenment. For the first half of the 19th century I've chosen also a bourgeois tragedy "Maria Magdalena" by Friedrich Hebbel. And as the third example I analysed the novella "Fräulein Else" by Arthur Schnitzler. All of the three heroines are daugthers, who are strongly influenced by this fact. All of them find a tragic end. Two of them commit suicide and one persuades her own father to kill her. The fathers are also an important part of the plot, because their largely contribute to death of their daughters. Emilia in "Emilia Galotti" is stabbed by her own father, after she persuades him to kill her, because she is afraid of losing her virtue, which is at that times related with religion and identified with chastity. In the first half of the 19th century the religious aspect was still a part of the concept of virtue and honour. But the honour was now perceived more in the way of reputation. Klara in "Maria Magdalena", who lost her virtue by...
