Comparative analysis of professional English texts

Cílem této bakalářské práce je srovnat tři odborné texty psané v anglickém jazyce. Všechny texty se zabývají humanoidními roboty, ale každý z jiného úhlu pohledu. První z textů je zveřejněn ve vědeckém časopise ‘Science Robotics‘ a je příkladem populárně naučného stylu. Druhý z nich je vyňatý z knihy ‘Humanoid Robots, Human-like machines‘ a zastupuje odborný styl. Třetím materiálem k analýze je video, které je zveřejněno na YouTube kanálu společnosti CNET. Aby mohlo být video použito jako výchozí materiál bakalářské práce, musel být text videa nejdříve přenesen do písemné podoby. Rozdíl mezi těmito texty je patrný, neboť každý z nich je určený pro jiný typ čtenáře či posluchače. V práci jsou popsány obsahy vybraných textů a vysvětleny jejich styly. Dále se práce zaměřuje na porovnání textů z hlediska mluveného a psaného jazyka, analýzu textů podle Jakobsonova modelu komunikace a na analýzu podle registru.

Cílem této bakalářské práce je srovnávací analýza odborných textů z oblasti informatiky. Jako téma pro materiály byla zvolena technologie VxLAN, která je nejčastěji používána v datových centrech. Prvním textem pro analýzu je článek z webového časopisu, druhým je technická dokumentace Request for Comments (RFC), třetím je video přednáška. Hlavním cílem této práce je prozkoumat vybrané materiály z různých pohledů a určit, do jaké míry se texty, psané a mluvené, liší v použití jazyka a jaké jsou jejich společné rysy. K dosažení tohoto cíle jsou materiály zkoumány z hlediska několika diskurzních rysů, mezi které patří funkce jazyka, styl a žánr, koheze, koherence a deixe. Práce se také zaměřuje na zjištění, zda jsou analyzované materiály typickými představiteli svých žánrů a stylů.

Vagueness in English university Arts and Humanities lectures

The present thesis focuses on the classification and description of individual groups of vague language devices. Furthermore, it describes the differences between the written and spoken academic register and the various functions of language in academic lectures. The material for the analysis is drawn from the British Academic Spoken English (BASE) corpus. The first section of the analysis is based on six excerpts from Arts and Humanities lectures, each 2000 words long. The vague language devices in the excerpts are analysed and classified into the groups described in the theoretical part of the thesis. The functions of the individual groups and the reasons why the occurrence of some of the groups is prominent in different parts of lectures are analysed. The second analysis describes three word classes with the highest occurrence in the previous research. This analysis is based on all Arts and Humanities lectures in the BASE corpus. The function/ (and) comprehensibility of written Czech in the intracultural communication of the deaf

This Bachelor Thesis deals with the topic of written Czech language in the interactive communication of the Deaf. The theoretical part comprises chapters about the general specifics of the Deaf community, their characteristic communication features (intercultural, but primarily intra-cultural), the specifics of their written language and of their reading skills. Furthermore, the theoretical part covers topics such as interference from mother/first tongue and translation theory, as these are closely connected with inter- and intra-cultural communication of the Deaf. The practical part explores research on intra-cultural communication. Specifically, by exploring the question if Czech texts written by the Deaf have a function in intra-cultural communication of this language minority, and if they are comprehensible for the readers. The initial hypothesis is that the Deaf understand defective texts created by Deaf themselves better than grammatically correct texts written by Czech native speakers. The research describes and analyses intra-cultural communication through written Czech, it refers to specific problems which occur in this case and characterizes mistakes made by participants in the communication process.
