Národopisná Morava and the Role of Folk Culture in the Protectorate of Bohemia and Moravia
Mouchová, Tereza ; Juhászová, Tereza (advisor) ; Šmidrkal, Václav (referee)
The bachelor thesis focuses on the group Národopisná Morava, which was founded in Uherské Hradiště in 1939. In addition to its ethnographic focus, which included the organisation of ethnographic events and courses, the group also cooperated with the occupation and the Protectorate administration. The thesis deals with the process of its establishment, the characteristics of its programme and its functioning within the Protectorate of Bohemia and Moravia. The first part of the thesis is also devoted to the relationship of this group with Národní souručenství and the Occupation Administration, from which Národopisná Morava gained a monopoly on the organisation of ethnographic festivals during the years of World War II. The second part of the thesis analyses the ways in which Národopisná Morava used folk culture to achieve its goals and promote its interests. The aim is to show, through content analysis, the connection between political issues and folk culture within the periodicals to which members of Národopisná Morava contributed. This connection is further explored in relation with ethnographic festivals, which were well attended due to the popularity of folk culture. The events organised by Národopisná Morava and ethnographic festivals in general were among the few events that were supported by...
A good death
Malo, Klára ; Filipová, Markéta (referee) ; Raimund, Karolina (advisor)
In my thesis I am working on the motifs I have been working on for the last three years, namely the motifs of contemporary funeral rites of passage against the background of historical ones. I note how we consciously and unconsciously displace these rituals from our lives and wonder why this is so and whether anything could be done about it. The Good Death is a hand-embroidered tapestry that illustrates with a slight exaggeration some of the contemporary phenomena of people's relationship to death, and confronts the audience with their own attitudes towards it.
Ambivalence of Identity: Cultural Traditions As a Theme in Contemporary Czech and Slovak Art
Maixner, Miroslav ; Klodová, Lenka (referee) ; Janečková,, Zuzana (referee) ; Zálešák, Jan (advisor)
The dissertation focuses on the phenomenon of a new presence of references to traditional folk culture in contemporary Czech and Slovak art. Emphasis is placed on the period from the year 2000 to the present. The core of the work consists of chapters devoted to artists who in this period significantly thematized various aspects of traditional folk culture, either as a partial element of specific projects or in the form of continuous interest in the field. The essence of this part is to show the breadth and heterogeneity of the examined manifestations across the media spectrum. The main purpose of the work is to analyze and place the researched phenomena in a relevant context within the theory and history of art. The reason is their different nature from thematically similar manifestations in the 19th and 20th centuries. In addition, when compared with current trends abroad, a number of connections are shown, such as links to environmental issues, criticism of the state of society and, above all, to new issues related to personal and collective identification. Therefore, I base the analysis of these phenomena on a hybrid interdisciplinary basis using theoretical approaches to identity in the social sciences and humanities. I do so in the introductory theoretical chapters, but the main focus is on the final analytical synthesis. To a large extent, it also builds on data obtained from interviews with artists, the transcripts of which the reader will find in the appendix. Finally, the documentation of curatorial projects and exhibitions realized as a practical part of the dissertation project is attached.

Chumchal, Jan
This dissertation thesis focuses on the person and work of Jan Nepomuk Polášek (1873-1956), a distinguished regional composer and music teacher who spent a significant part of his life in Valašské Meziříčí. Throughout his life, Polášek devoted himself to creative work, which was, to a varying degree, inspired by the Moravian Wallachian folk culture. The thesis outlines the important phases of Polášek's life including his childhood and school days, first contact with music teaching, his studies at the Brno Organ School, and, last but not least, his relationship with Leoš Janáček. The Biographical part of the thesis ends with a subchapter devoted to Polášek's work in Valašské Meziříčí until his death in 1956. Polášek's body of work includes his compositions, music-related organisational activities, music teaching, publishing and folk song collecting. The aforementioned activities are presented and analysed in the remaining chapters of this dissertation thesis. The final chapter analyses selected instrumental, vocal-instrumental and vocal compositions of Polášek's, based on which it illustrates the key elements of his creative work. The thesis presents some entirely new findings regarding the life and work of Jan Nepomuk Polášek that are founded on many information sources the author obtained. Key...

Interpretation of the Folk Religiosity: From Enlightened "Superstition" to Postmodern "Spirituality"
Veith, Daniel ; Šalanda, Bohuslav (advisor) ; Pargač, Jan (referee)
This work represents various approaches to the phenomenon of folk religiosity, both from the perspective of ethnology and related humanities as well. Folk religiosity is here understood within the meaning of folk version of official religious ideas. Ever since the time of the Reformation in the 16th century, there were efforts to make a discipline out of the folk religiosity. Then the Age of Enlightenment contributed to the process of "disenchantment of the world" (Max Weber). Results of these processes are illustrated, among other things, in the example of handwritten prayer books and the phenomenon of folk chronicleship. The Enlightenment condemnation of folk "superstitions" in the name of racionality is put into context of postmodern interest in the so-called "Celtic Spirituality". Contemporary Celtic Spirituality is a specific spiritual power, which refers to numerous elements from traditional folk religiosity circuit. The analysis of the second life of folk religiosity shows to the creative reinterpretation, which emphasizes the perception of the world as the creation.
