Cholesterol and Lipoproteins, Their Metabolism and Effect on Human Health

Cholesterol and lipoproteins, their impact (aspect) on human health The thesis is focused on cholesterol, lipoproteins and their metabolism. Detail is devoted to their charakteristics, significance, function in the body and the effects on human health. The first chapter summarizes informations about cholesterol chemical properties and structure, through its processing to the characteristic, importance and function in the human body. There are analyzed opportunities to affect cholesterol levels. The second chapter presents lipoproteins as particles for our body essential. It includes their characteristic, classification, meaning and function in the body. The third chapter provides information about dyslipidemia. It focuses on the classification, significance and treatment. The following chapter deals with atherosclerosis, its causes, consequences and risks. A recent chapter presents a brief overview from part of laboratory analyzes on lipid and lipoproteins. Key words: Cholesterol, lipoprotein, dyslipidemia, hyperlipoproteinemia, atherosclerosis.

Influence of Diet on Blood Lipid Levels in Dyslipidemic Patients

The bachelor thesis is focused on the relationship of eating habits and dyslipidemia. Its aim is to find out whether diet influences blood lipid levels. The paper is divided into a theoretical and a research part. The theoretical part handles with lipids of the human organism in general, their metabolism and the risks of atherosclerosis. The research part describes work with patients who suffer from lipid metabolism disorders. The patients had a diet consultation and, two months after, they had their blood drawn to see the results of cholesterol and triglycerides levels. The patients also filled in a questionnaire concerning their eating habits. It turned out that nutritional intervention had resulted in an average decrease in triglycerides and total as well as LDL-cholesterol levels. However, HDL-cholesterol level decreased as well. Furthermore, the questionnaire enquiry showed that dyslipidemic patients do not, in general, disobey recommendations of the dyslipidemic diet. The results of the paper showed that dyslipidemic patients follow recommendations of a healthy diet. However, there is still space for improvement. Thus, regular diet consultations are important and can help improve state of health of dyslipidemic patients. Keywords: Diet, dyslipidemia, cholesterol, triglycerides

Risk factors of atherosclerosis

Atherosclerosis and its risk factors are bases of most cardiovascular diseases (CVD), the leading cause of morbidity and mortality in industrial countries worldwide. Recently many new, independent biomarkers have appearred which could in future serve for increasing predictive value of "classical" risk factors of atherosclerosis. That is why in our bachelor thesis we followed the occurrence of classical risk factors which are used for calculation of the risk of fatal cardiovascular event during next ten years along with several new biomarkers in a group of randomly selected clients of a spa resort Savoy in Karlovy Vary without clinical signs of atherosclerosis. The results show that the most frequent risk factor in this population was hypercholesterolemia and a positive family history of a cardiovascular disease. The study group was divided according to the cardiovascular risk. We found that only 57 % of middle-aged persons belong to a group with the minor to medium risk, i.e. while 43 % of the followed parsons had high or very high risk of CVD. According to our expectation, high percentage of persons with a high cardiovascular risk was among men. The population of women suffered from metabolic syndrome in 35 % while the men´s part of the study group had metabolic syndrome even in 52 %. The final part of the thesis studied some "non-traditional" risk factors of atherosclerosis. In the investigated population the highest percentage showed lipoprotein-associated phospholipase (Lp-PLA2), increased concentration of lipoprotein (a) was less frequent and the lowest incidence was found in the case of small dense LDL. Pathological levels of Lp(a) were more frequent in women while increased Lp-PLA2 was found especially in men. Persons with high CVD risk showed higher concentration of Lp-PLA2, the other two factors did not differ between the two groups with different risk score. Nevertheless, the predictive value of Lp-PLA2 with respect to assessment of CVD risk was very low.

Influence of increased aplication of the file polyunsaturated fatty acids on alteration of level cholesterol of individuum.

I have engaged in the influence of increased aplication of the file polyunsaturated fatty acids on alteration of level cholesterol of individuum in my bachelory work. At first I had studied theoretical knowledge focused the theme of polyunsatureted fatty acid and cholesterol. I had devoted to this knowledge in theoretical part of my bachelory work. After I had contacted some people. I had known that they have increased cholesterol level. This people I had acquainted with themes of my bachelory work and development of research. The acquainted people have accepted part of research. Initial measuring taked place after. The measuring determined the level of total cholesterol, LDL cholesterol, HDL cholesterol, triacylglycerol. The three month interventionist program taked place after, from march 2011 to december 2012. The Participant of research had consumed of food supplement, which contented fish oil. Fish oil is rich in content of polyunsaturated fatty acid omega 3 (EPA and DHA). Output measuring taked place after three month. On the basis of measuring got results. I worked with results in the practical part of my bachelory work. I have compared results of initial and output measuring.
