The introduction of bilingual local names as a public policy process (case study)

This diploma thesis examines the public political process for the implementation of local bilingual names while focusing on the enforcement of this law for citizens with Polish nationality in the Těšin Region. The main objective is to explain why this policy was or was not changed, what the reasons were for the non-conformity of the policy objectives with the results and to discover the actual failures in the implementation process, where as a consequence, in some villages the right of the minority to use local bilingual names was not fulfilled or was beset with problems in some villages. The subject of the investigation of both the legal and the institutional aspect of the problem focuses on the participating subjects, where one of the main roles of the committee for national minorities on the board of the municipal representatives was the requirement to implement local bilingual names. The guidelines for understanding the tools, procedures and relations used were the initial theoretical points related to the institutions and their changes, the implementation process (top-down and bottom-up approaches), initial theoretical points explaining the responsibilities of the participating subjects and not the intended consequences of their actions and those of others. The research design is a case study.
Canadian media: history/genesis and present/contemporaneity

The thesis is focused on key canadian media - print, radio and television, in the individulal chapters I'm trying to describe their development as it is during the formative years and influenced, and what role it plays in today's Canada and which one of them has a privileged position in the country. Before that I was trying to deal with the history of Canada to clarify the roots all Canadian journalism and the media occurred. I also give attention to some selected major Canadian media personalities, whether those from the past and the present, who are in some way involved on what is today Canadian journalism, or the form of it's today. My attention did not miss either: the French-Canadian journalism, which about their form and the place on the map of the Canadian media fought for centuries. Its center is the Canadian province of Quebec. In my work, I also discuss how journalism is taught at several Canadian universities, how much of them offers a learning program and how they teach it. Whether the emphasis is more on theory or more practical. I write also about media education, which has been several years in Canada's history. Last but not least, I tried to map the Czech track in the Canadian media and specifically designate some of expatriate media that readers can find in Canada.
Speech development in children growing up in a bilingual environment

A n o t a t i o n This thesis deals with the development of speech in children growing up in a bilingual environment. The aim is to explain the basic concepts related to bilingualism, describe in detail strategies of bilingual education and describe the specifics of speech development of children growing up in a bilingual environment. I would like to broaden the community understanding about bilingualism and summarize new ideas and information for parents who are considering a bilingual or multilingual education. Theoretical knowledge is used in the practical part of this thesis, which examines and compares the differences in the speech development of children growing up with two or more languages against children who grow up with only one mother tongue.
Social aspects of language use in the Republic of Malta

The aim of this is thesis is to introduce and point out social aspects of language use in the Republic of Malta. English language is quite a big issue in Malta because the country used to be under the British influence, remaining until nowadays. Methods used in this work were based on searching mostly through the journal scientific articles and available literature. At the same time, specific researches dealing with language use of Maltese and English language are discussed in the thesis as well as providing different points of view on an overall language situation. English language has a big influence on everydays lives of Maltese population, both in formal and informal sections.
The Acquisition of Language by Children from Bilingual Families

The thesis deals with the issues of bilingual education. How bilingual families solve bilingualism, influence of bilingualism on child development and the methods of bilingual education. The theoretical part is divided into three chapters. The first chapter deals with language and its development stages in language acquisition, switching or mixing languages. The second chapter focuses on bilingualism itself. Here I describe the basic types of bilingualism, the ways and cause of bilingualism. In the third chapter about bilingual education I explain its principles and typologies. In the practical part I used the qualitative research. I wanted to find out how children develop bilingualism, if they mix languages and also what is their parent´s knowledge of and experience with bilingualism. The goal of this thesis is to disaprove prejudices against bilingual education.
Annotated translation: Denken - zu Risiken und Nebenwirkungen.

The purpose of my bachelor thesis is to translate two chapters from a book called Denken - zu Risiken und Nebenwirkungen, from German to Czech. It was written by Manfred Spitzer, a famous German psychologist. In the Commentary, I use Christiane Nord's model of original text analysis in translation. Furthermore, I present the most significant translation problems and shifts, invented by Jiří Levý and Anton Popovič. The book presents the newest findings related to human nervous system. The text is easily comprehensible, it can be read by the general public without any risks of misinterpretation. The first chapter focuses on the differences between Western and Eastern thinking, the second one describes the positive influence which bilingualism has on human thinking. During the translation process, my main aim is to follow the functionally oriented approach to translation and to work out the most appropriate method. Because the text deals with medical topics, it is essential to give forth the exact meaning of the text without disturbing the original meaning. I combine faithful and free translation - faithfulness does not mean literality and freedom does not equal attractiveness. Literary Creation of Petru Popescu in Context of Romanian Post-war Literature

During the communist era in Romania the literature and its authors had been under pressure of normative demands, which substantially restricted freedom of writing. The authors tried to escape the official socialist realism and restore the esthetic function of literature. In the introduction chapter of this work this evolution is described. One of the authors trying to restore the esthetic function of Romanian prose in the 60s was Petru Popescu inspired by the urban background and American literature. His novels express the emotions of the Romanian post-war young generation. Although being successful in his homeland he emmigrated to the USA in 1974, where he made a career as an English writing scenarist and novelist. Other chapters of this thesis describe his work from his poetic debut until his latest work. They reflect the changes in his choices of topics and narrative methods applying the F. K. Stanzel's literary theory. One of the chapters deals with general questions related to exile, writer's identity, selection of the languages and adaptation strategies. Exile as a creative process. Chapters from romanian exile literature in France.

Exile has always played a significant role in the history of the Romanian nation. On that account the Romanian literature written in exile after 1945 presents an important part of the history of Romanian literature as a whole. Due to its linguistic and cultural affinity France became one of the main host countries for Romanian exile writers. The introductive chapter is dedicated to description, classification and history of this phenomenon in Romanian context; furthermore, it deals with the position and reception of exile literature in Romania. According to their departure date in exile two generations of authors are presented: Mircea Eliade, Virgil Ierunca, Monica Lovinescu who left Romania in 1940s and Paul Goma, Bujor Nedelcovici, Dumitru Ţepeneag who decided to leave in France in 1970s and 1980s. The chosen works help us to get to know to the writers' creation and lives during the process of integration and, simultaneously, we get familiar with the communist Romania that became the main topics of the exile writers who are chosen as representatives of their exile generation. Through them the basic survey of this phenomenon in Romanian literature was drawn up.

It particularly examines the early phase of adoption of another language. In the theoretical part, two forms of bilingualism are broken down in detail, and these differ from each other based on the criteria of the period when the additional language was adopted. Simultaneous bilingualism means adoption of a mother tongue and an additional language at the same time. The term sequential bilingualism is used to describe subsequent adoption of another language, which occurs after a mother tongue is adopted. Both of these forms are processed from the point of view of the scientific disciplines of psychology, pedagogy, psycholinguistics and neurobiology. Attention is focused on comparing both types of adoption of another language. The aim is to create a theoretical basis for the entire process, which occurs at pre- school and young school ages.
