Not surrendering your power": Freebirth in the Czech Republic

This thesis addresses the issue of unassisted childbirth from the perspective of medical anthropology, or the anthropology of childbirth. Particular attention is paid to the question of why some women choose to give birth this way, taking into account the (Czech) social and legal context in which this choice is made. The work is based on qualitative research, and draws primarily on in-depth interviews with nine women who have had their own experience of at least one birth without professional medical assistance. The main findings of this thesis are primarily based on thematic data analysis and its interpretation, which identified five main thematic categories: own (emic) conceptualization of childbirth; following one's own needs; distrust of doctors and the bio-medical system; authoritative knowledge; and care during childbirth. The overall overarching theme is women's desire to 'not give away (surrender) their power', which corresponds with their effort to establish and maintain agency within the pregnancy and birth process. Gender analysis of the Department of Gynecology and Obstetrics in selected episodes of the TV series The Surgery in the Rose Garden 2

The thesis "Gender analysis of the Department of Gynecology and Obstetrics in selected episodes of the TV series The Surgery in the Rose Garden 2" introduces readers to problematic passages seen from a gender perspective in episodes 633 to 666 of the soap opera The Surgery in the Rose Garden 2. Research has found that doctors treat female nurses, female doctors and often female patients in a paternalistic manner (the exception are friends, such as a neighbour). The counterpart to the angry and conservative doctor Čestmír Mázl, who is stereotypically masculine (authoritative, aggressive), is the Ugandan doctor Aisha Nakabugo Kingi, who is stereotypically feminine (sensitive, empathetic). She is also progressive and is liked by patients and colleagues in the hospital. Her different ethnicity is a problem for Mázl and two other characters, but doctor Kingi disproves the racist stereotypes with her behavior and eventually befriends Mázl. Both surrogacy and home birth are presented as problematic ventures that are not recommended because they can turn out badly; in the soap opera, they only turn out well because of luck.

Childbirth in the home environment

The Bachelor's thesis Childbirth in the home environment deals with births outside a health care facility. The theoretical part describes the birth as such, including the different variants of preparation, through the different birth times and the people who can accompany the woman to the birth. Subsequently, the bachelor thesis discusses obstetric care in a health care facility and at home, the individual experiences of women in this issue, and the advantages, disadvantages, and possible complications of home and maternity care. At the end of the theoretical part of the thesis, it mentions some legislative information and, last but not least, provides information on the differences in obstetric care in different countries. At the end of the theoretical part, selected studies and statistics on similar topics are mentioned for completeness. The main aim of the thesis was to find out why women prefer home births to hospital births and whether they are aware of the possible risks. For the practical part of the thesis, I designed two questionnaires which were distributed through social networking sites to suitable respondents. The thesis focuses on the analysis of a dispute regarding home birth and discourses associated with it. The thesis focuses on the analysis of a dispute regarding home birth and discourses associated with it. The thesis focuses on the analysis of a dispute regarding home birth and discourses associated with it. Choice of location and proces sof giving birth in czech environment remains very limited and domestic deliveries are subject of controversy among professional medical community and state institutions on the one hand and midwives, civil movements and comitted mothers on the other hand. Theme divides laical and expert public. It's established through discourses, reflect the views and opinions of the two quarreled groups - supporters of medically controlled childbirth and supporters of natural birth. In the context of media reporting can be identified two main streams of discursive formations, scattering of concepts, thematic choices, objels and modalities of coming to the statement - medical discourse and natural discourse. Anthropological perception of current home births without medical assistance.

The study discusses the current home births in developed countries. Introduction deals with the emergence of a model of human birth in the background of evolutionary mechanisms and the resulting biological risks, which are illustrated by data on maternal and neonatal mortality. Home births are understood in the complex scale, and so formation of current model of obstetrics in selected countries is shown in historical background. It brings most common image of women and the circumstances that lead to the choice of home birth. The study focuses on the comparison of home and hospital births due to the occurrence of undesirable health complications. As this comparison showed the results that births are largely influenced by medical interventions carried out, frequency of these procedures is also compared. Higher occurrence of interventions in hospital births can be partly explained by changes in the demographic profile of mother, which increases the risks associated with childbirth at home. Data processed in the study suggest that today's home births require extensive implementation of system changes, and therefore the home birth as a safe alternative is not recommended. Home childbirths in the context of the Czech health

This thesis deals with framing of homebirths in the Czech Republic. It is focused on the interpretation of homebirths in the Czech mass and alternative media. The goal of this paper is find out what kind of discourse dominate about homebirths in public discussion, against which attitude to childbirth it is in conflict and if this interpretation correspond with "real" practise of homebirths. I used discourse analysis for uncover discourses in Czech media and the in-depth interview with mothers for detecting the process, risks and experience of homebirth (was compared with the experience of childbirths in hospital). The secondary goal of the thesis is to discover how much are reflected the people involved in this issue. Theoretically, the paper is based on framing theory and the concept of human rights. The sources of analysis are composed of the Czech media articles (2014-2017) and the statements of mothers interviewed.

Homebirth: intimate partners' perspectives

This bachelor thesis addresses the topic of a planned home-birth from the perspective of the father of the child and investigates his role in the decision-making concerning the birth place and the birth itself. The experience of the man is examined in the context of the whole couple. The thesis is based on qualitative research which examines the above-mentioned topics in the Czech context using semi-structured interviews with women who gave birth at home and their partners. The empirical chapters represent the results of the thematic analysis and their interpretation, supported by relevant literature. The thematic categories that frame the respondents' statements are three: decision-making process, presence at birth and the presence of the father from the mother's point of view. The study indicates that men are often not fully integrated into the decision-making process itself. The reasons for the low level of integration of men into the decision-making process can be found on the part of both women and men. The work presents which factors might determine the male experience with home birth, as well as which circumstances might affect the degree of involvement in childbirth itself.
