In 2007 the international community started to establish the political status of Kosovo, the Serbian province, inhabited mostly by the Muslim Albanian majority. In February 2008 Kosovo declared independence. What happened in the so-called "last media battle for Kosovo"? This thesis, called Representations of Serbs and Albanians in the Czech press during the proces of declaring independence of Kosovo, investigates discourses of two Czech newspapers and their coverage of the events between February 2007 and June 2008 when the Kosovo Constitution came in force. This thesis use both quantitative and qualitative content analysis. The analysis of recontextualization shows that the newspapers reproduce the dominant Serbian nationalism that focuses on the myth of a Greater Serbia.By an appropriation of different discourses, the dominant Serbian nationalism becomes legitimized and justified. In particular, the newspapers reproduce distinctive religious discourses from the political past, and furthermore, they borrow the so-called European,"war on terrorism" and "crime" discourses from the international mainstream public spheres and appropriate them to the contemporary political context. They borrow the so-called "modern Munich betrayal" and the Czech-Serbian kinship too. Generally, the newspapers reappropriate...
Le Corbusier's Architectural and Urban Visions in perspective of Semiology
Štěpánková, Anna ; Marcelli, Miroslav (advisor) ; Váša, Ondřej (referee)
of Diploma Thesis "Le Corbusier's architectural and urban visions in a semiological perspective The subject of this thesis is a semiological analysis of Le Corbusier's text Towards a New Architecture. It methodologically follows semiological conceptions of Ferdinand de Saussure and Roland Barthes. The main methodological source is a work of French theoretician of architecture and urbanism François Choay, The Rule and the Model (1997), in which she has stated three paradigms, which according to her, influenced forming of modern urbanism as an autonomous science: genre of architectural treatise, utopia and scientific discourse. For each of these discursive forms she has identified characteristic signs. Le Corbusier is considered as a symbol of modern movement of architecture and urbanism, who broke away from an old tradition and brought to realm of architecture and urbanism a new insight. The fundamental question of this thesis is, whether this innovative approach could be found also in his texts, in the manner how Le Corbusier wrote about architecture and urbanism, or whether Le Corbusier followed an old tradition. This question should be answered in the course of searching for the signs of mentioned paradigms postulated by F. Choay.
Media Presentation of the Pope Benedict XVI.
Pániková, Klára ; Češka, Jakub (advisor) ; Fulka, Josef (referee)
The aim of this diploma thesis is to analyse the media presentation of the Pope Benedict XVI. in the Czech press. We arise from the assumtion that the way the Czech press writes about the present Pope is set by a certain discourse. That is why we use the method of dicourse analysis designed by Michel Foucault. Having carefully analysed altogether 690 articles from selected newspapers and magazines published between 02/04/2005 and 31/12/2007 we reached a number of fragmental results which in the end turned to be the parts of the searched for discourse. In so doing some hidden motives, which seem to form an esential part of the media presentation of the Pope Benedict XVI., emerged. Along with that the absence of the journalists' ability to assess the proper meaning of some words or to lay proper stresses appeared too. As this thesis brings out, the journalists are at the same time impossible to take a step forward in this as their way of thinking about the Pope is set by the discourse (that they themselves first created). So, we came to the conclusion that the media presentation of the Pope Benedict XVI. is influenced by, e.g. stereotypes we Czechs have about the German nationality or artificially (by journalists) connected events in Benedict's life. We also show that the present Pope is a very good object of...
Soft power a zahraniční politika: nepodceňjeme nedemokratické státy?
Slavíková, Kamila ; Zemanová, Štěpánka (advisor) ; Halimzai, Pamir (referee)
A part of academic work inspired by Nye's concept of "soft power" has adopted his conceptualisation without much reservation, while another part has contested it. Some authors describe Nye's conceptualisation of power as biased towards democracies, or otherwise challenge the concept as category of analysis. On the case study of the partial democracy of Singapore, through analysis of official discourse, the thesis explores whether Singapore's government acknowledges the idea and if so, how it interprets it. Secondly, the thesis aims to provide more insight into the use of soft power as category of analysis with the help of the selected case study.

For thou, O LORD, hast done as it pleased thee
PECOVÁ, Lenka
This paper is concerned with synchronic analysis of the biblical text. The text has been analyzed according to various narrative methods, as presented in the manual by J. L. Ska. The Book of Jonah is an extremely complex and elaborated text. It is basically a narration, determined by a precise Hebrew syntax. In the Book of Jonah, we may find three interlaced plots. This fact makes of the book, one of the shortest books in the Old Testament, a precious literary masterpiece. The most secondary literature affirms that the main theme of the Book consists in God{\crq}s grace and mercy. But the narrative analysis discovers also the importance of the prophet himself, who is a splendid image of the mankind, and his wonderful complexness.
The Man, Death and Other World in the Time of Baroque
DUDA, Zdeněk
The thesis deals the question of the last things of man, so the theme of the death, dying and imagines about the world and the other world, especially in the first and the second third of the 18th century in the South Bohemian town of Písek. The themes of the last things of man are studied on the example of two possible contemporary discourses, namely the semipopular and popular discours. The contemporary popular discours was constructed by the analysis of testaments of town people of Písek from the thirties of the 18th century, as the resources of the semipopular discours books ars moriendi and hymn-books were used. The world and the other world diffused especially in the time of the funeral; the almighty God was usually coming into the world through the death and the ritual of the funeral and manifested his fairness and grace. In the view of the popular discours the reality of baroque world was still confirmed and accepted by the funeral ceremonies again.
