Sedláček, Jakub ; Numerato, Dino (advisor) ; Špaček, Ondřej (referee) ; Mikuláš, Peter (referee)
This thesis provides a novel view of celebrity fandom through the lens of big social data, while at the same time exploring the opportunities and challenges of using digital traces from social media for sociological research. The first chapter provides a sociological framing of celebrity, a short, joint history of celebrity and the media, and a discussion of the revolutionary role that social media and its platforms played in celebrity culture. Finally, it attempts to bridge theories related to celebrity's role in society with research on "lifestyle politics", "polarization", "taste cultures" and "lifestyle enclaves". The second chapter serves as an introduction into big social data and digital trace data. First as a socio-technological phenomenon, then as a research tool. It covers its historical and current availability and discusses its epistemological and practical opportunities, limits and dangers. Finally, it introduces Facebook pagelikes as a valuable source of information on lifestyle politics. Chapter three is an exploration of Facebook digital traces of 90k celebrity followers. Kopecká, Hana ; Špaček, Ondřej (advisor) ; Patáková, Markéta (referee)
This thesis looks at the structure of cultural consumption among students of first and second year at Charles University with a focus on evaluation of the cultural omnivore thesis. Maurano Filho, Sander Roberto ; Vykoukal, Jiří (advisor) ; Matějka, Ondřej (referee)
Sander Roberto Maurano Filho Producing and Consuming the Nation: Ethnography of a Czech National Memorial Abstract Following a research agenda stimulated by Billig (1995), Palmer (1998) and Fox (2008) towards the study of aspects of everyday life through which nations are reproduced, this work approaches the National Memorial on Vítkov Hill, part of the Czech National Museum in Prague. In order to investigate to what extend national cultural productions constrain people's practices and understandings, this research offers an ethnographic study of the production and consumption of the monument, considering practices of consumption and occupation that reproduce, subvert or negotiate its national content and colossal planning. The National Memorial on Vítkov Hill combines memorial, museum, statue and park, which had their meanings re-negotiated by different political regimes during the 20th century. Re-opened in 2009 aiming to 'make sense' of national history, identity and memory in the context of a new, democratic and European Czech Republic, the monument combines official ceremonies, such as military parades and presidential rituals, with permanent and temporary exhibitions with national functions. Although planned to celebrate the nation, exhibitions are consumed by visitors that distort the national...
