The evolution of ideological position of ANO 2011 between the years 2013 and 2021
Kočvara, Adam ; Hájek, Lukáš (advisor) ; Perottino, Michel (referee)
This bachelor's thesis focuses on the change in the ideological position of ANO 2011 between 2013 and 2021. ANO 2011 is understood as a business-firm party, which adjusts its ideological position based on voter demand. It describes the development of the ideological position on the left-right cleavage and on the cleavage of the relationship with the European Union. This analysis is based on CVVM opinion polls and the Chapel Hill Expert Survey. The evolution of the ideological position is also examined in relative terms, i.e. how the ANO 2011 movement is evolving in relation to the poles of the cleavage lines represented by KSČM and TOP 09. The results show that on the left-right cleavage line, the absolute and relative ideological position of ANO 2011 has shifted towards the political left. On the cleavage line of the relationship to the EU, the absolute position of ANO 2011 is stable, while the relative position has shifted towards euroscepticism.
Geopolitical orientation of Moldova - contexts of the cleavage line in Moldovan society
Janeček, Jakub ; Jelen, Libor (advisor) ; Volný, Vít (referee)
This bachelor thesis focuses on the geopolitical orientation of Moldova. Its objective is to determine whether the country is more inclined towards cooperation with the European Union or Russia. Moldovan society has been polarised in this regard for a long time and recent events, particularly the war in Ukraine, have had a significant impact on its orientation. To achieve the aim of the study, content analysis was used, from which four main topics that divide Moldovan society in terms of the country's geopolitical orientation emerged: the integration of Moldova into the European Union, the war in Ukraine, the issues of identity, internal political division and energy policy. The findings of the subsequent analysis indicate that Moldova is shifting towards the European Union, especially in recent years. However, opinions on the orientation of the country are not unanimous in either the political or the social sphere, and it is in the country's best interest to maintain good relations with both sides. Keywords: Moldova, orientation, Russia, European Union, cleavages
Analysis of the voting behaviour of the Hungarian minority in the 2023 Slovak parliamentary elections
Béber, Matúš ; Jelen, Libor (advisor) ; Madleňák, Tibor (referee)
The Hungarian political representation and its electoral base have undergone an intense internal evolution, split and value shift in recent years. Based on a study of the literature, the main motivation of this thesis was to clarify how this evolution has influenced the electoral behaviour of the Hungarian minority in Slovakia in the 2023 parliamentary elections. The main objectives of the thesis are to explain and describe the factors that influence the electoral support for Hungarian parties; to further clarify the relationship between voter turnout and the representation of the Hungarian minority; and finally, to explain the dependence of the electoral performance of Hungarian parties on the electoral performance of other political entities. The analytical part of the thesis is based on the results of the 2021 census and the results of the 2023 parliamentary elections. The main methodological procedure for answering the research questions is primarily the usage of the regression analysis. In addition to this, correlation analyses are also used. The results indicate a clear dominance of Hungarian parties in southern Slovakia. However, mainly due to low voter turnout Hungarian parties are not able to translate this dominance into parliamentary advancement. The most significant factor explaining...
KDU-ČSL from the point of view of the political parties theory
Štamberk, Ondřej ; Perottino, Michel (advisor) ; Stauber, Jakub (referee)
The diploma thesis focuses on the application of selected classical theoretical concepts on the example of the Christian Democratic Union - Czechoslovak People's Party to assess the extent to which these concepts are relevant in today's political science research. Theoretical concepts are introduced in the first chapter of the theoretical part. The second chapter offers a summary of the historical development of Christian Democrats from their foundation to the last parliamentary elections in 2021. In the practical part, the theories are applied to the KDU-ČSL, and the following chapter further introduces and analyzes electoral results of the party during the existence of the Czech Republic, as well as its electorate. The aim is to find characteristic patterns that are unique in the case of KDU-ČSL compared to other Czech political parties and to answer why this is the case and what consequences for further development it has for this party. As a result, I managed to apply all the theories presented and come up with new points and characteristics concerning the development of election results and the KDU-ČSL voter base. Keywords KDU-ČSL, political parties, Christian democracy, cleavages, electoral geography, elections, party structure Title KDU-ČSL from the point of view of the political parties theory
Relevance of the theory of the emergence of the new "Transnational Cleavage"
Maděra, Matyáš ; Stauber, Jakub (advisor) ; Guasti, Petra (referee)
This essay compares two distinct concepts of a cleavage line - transnational and periphery- centre. The research uses the comparative method. Both concepts will first be contrasted theoretically (comparison of differing theories) and later empirically (through differences in their manifestation into political parties). The results from the comparison of several theories suggest shared traits between both theories, but with a few key differences. Based on data from European political parties, the author of this thesis concludes, that these differences are a result of incorrectly defining the concept of transnational cleavage. Firstly, the cleavage is not yet entirely formed and secondly was not the main impulse for the rise of green parties, which is the main difference between both concepts. This forming cleavage has to be distinguished from a third concept, which is a periphery-centre cleavage on the European level. Author of this essay argues that the conflict within the European Union is a result of cross-cutting between two periphery-centre cleavages on different levels. First has a global reach (which is why it's wrongly labelled as transnational), while the second is only happening in Europe. The two cleavages are distinguished by contrasting centers, but the peripheral protest against these...
Šumava National Park and Interests of its Municipalities: The Case of Postmaterial Cleavages?
Musilová, Karolína ; Jüptner, Petr (advisor) ; Švec, Kamil (referee)
The diploma thesis Šumava National Park and Interests of its Municipalities: The Case of Postmaterial Cleavages? analyses, if the postmaterial cleavage is present in the case of Šumava National Park and how is it projected on the national level. Since the very beginning, there have been argues about the notion of the national park, where two different set of ideas collide. On the one hand, there are local municipalities which depend on incomes from tourism, on the other hand, the environmentalists seek for growing extent of areas without any human intervention. The theoretical background is based on concept of cleavages by S. Rokkan and S.M. Lipset. Special attention is paid to the postmaterial dimension of the cleavage, which was evolved by R. Inglehart. The analytical part consists of case study, which examines the attitudes of the stakeholders. The examination is based on semi-structured interviews with mayors, official documents and media coverage of the topic. According to the findings, there is a cleavage, which is visible on all levels of political system, including political parties and presidents.
Development of the Czech party system between 2010-2013
Korbel, Tomáš ; Brunclík, Miloš (advisor) ; Mlejnek, Josef (referee)
The master thesis "Development of the Czech party system between 2010-2013" focuses on an analysis of the state of the Czech party system with an emphasis on political developments over the past few years as well as the last two Czech Parliamentary elections in 2010 and 2013. The results of the elections deviate from the long term developments in the country since the 1990s and the fall of the communist regime. The goal of this work is to define phases which capture the essential developments of the Czech party system and what trends it currently demonstrates using quantitative methods which will help us to calculate things such as the index of the effective number of parties in the party system. The main question that this work will try to answer is whether or not we can consider the Czech party system to be consolidated.
Cleavage politics and Europeanisation-induced transformation of the national political space - the case of the Czech Republic
Stahl, Cosimo ; Vykoukal, Jiří (advisor) ; Cibulková, Petra (referee) ; Hanley, Seán (referee)
Bibliographic note STAHL, C. (2014): Cleavage Politics and Europeanisation-induced transformation of the national political space - The Case of the Czech Republic, 94 p. Master thesis, Charles University, Faculty of Social Sciences, Institute of International Studies. Supervisor: doc. PhDr. Jiří Vykoukal, CSc. Abstract This research seeks to map the national political space and assess the prevailing cleavage patterns in the Czech Republic. Processes of globalisation and Europeanisation have left their imprint in Western Europe - splitting the electorate into winners and losers of globalisation and denationalisation. This demarcation vs. integration magnet is also relevant in the CEE region - altering and reshuffling the underlying structure of party competition and EU contestation. By employing quantitative content analysis of print media the prevailing issue and cleavage dimensions will be reconstructed both during early stages of democratic transition (1996 Parliamentary elections) and after the 2004-EU-enlargement (2010 elections). While the political discourse and politics in the 1990s are primarily structured by issues of economic transition and post-communist transformation (underlying the classical socio-economic cleavage between market and state), in 2010 also cultural and post-materialist political...
Electoral Geography of Poland After 1989
Šulc, Jan ; Mlejnek, Josef (advisor) ; Kubát, Michal (referee)
The master's thesis "Electoral Geography of Poland After 1989" explores the spatial distribution of patterns of electoral behavior in Poland on the basis of analysis of the results of all presidential elections and elections to the Sejm that took place in the country between the years 1990-2010. The main hypothesis tested by this master thesis is that former boundaries between Russia, Prussia (Germany) and Austria (Austria-Hungary), between which the territory of modern-day Poland was divided in the 19th century, still have an impact on Poland's electoral geography. On the basis of this hypothesis, political parties and presidential candidates are divided into two pre-defined categories: traditionalist and modernist The validity of the hypothesis is then proven by visual analysis of political parties' and presidential candidates' electoral maps, and also by the application of Pearson's correlation coefficient on political parties' electoral results from constituencies and presidential candidates' electoral results from voivodships. In contemporary Poland, a clear rift exists between the parts of the country formerly dominated by Prussia (Germany) and major Polish cities on the one hand (also known as "Poland A"), and Russia and Austria (Austria-Hungary) on the other hand (which is sometimes...
