Aspiration of English plosives in Czech students of English studies
Pospíšilová, Andrea ; Skarnitzl, Radek (advisor) ; Dušková, Libuše (referee)
Voice onset time (VOT) was shown to provide an effective basis on which to differentiate individual plosives in English. This thesis carries out an analysis of recordings of university students to determine whether specific phonetic in- struction improves pronunciation of non-native speakers of English with focus on aspiration of plosives and VOT. In the first part, a theoretical background is provided with definitions of plosives, VOT and its use and measurement. It also reviews the factors that have been shown to affect the VOT values. In addition, a brief overview of second language acquisition is given, with focus on English pronunciation. The second, empirical part describes the material and method used in the analysis and provides figures and results of statistical tests that were run. The results suggest a significant increase in VOT values as a result of one semester of Phonetics and Phonology course. Furthermore, individual plosives and positions in a word were examined sep- arately to determine whether there are any differences as suggested by the theoretical overview. Keywords: voice onset time, aspiration, Czech English, second language acquisition
The importance of income on subjective well-being
Sedlář, Jan ; Baxa, Jaromír (advisor) ; Skuhrovec, Jiří (referee)
1 Abstract My Bachelor thesis deals in a comprehensive way with the discussion unleashed by the publication of the Easterlin's article which called attention to more complex relations between the absolute level of income and the subjective well-being than the economic theory would ever assume . There is the literature shown which finds the explanation why the relation - the absolute level of income and the subjective well-being - does not hold without exceptions. A special attention is devoted to the human behaviour: comparison of the individual's situation with the situation of his reference group, comparison of the individual's situation with the situation he was accustomed to in the past, the individual's adaptation to the new situation and change of his aspiration and on the overvaluation of the benefits from the achieved goal. The first characteristic is tested experimentally with use of the analogy: the income as the evaluation of the job performance, the mark as the evaluation of the student. The experiment did not prove that the comparison of the student with his reference group would have the influence on his own performance. The second part of my thesis is focused on the description of the relationship between the gross national income per capita and the satisfaction of the inhabitants from the...
Dysphagia failure of the upper esophageal sphincter in patients after stroke
Gregová, Daniela ; Bitnar, Petr (advisor) ; Smolíková, Libuše (referee)
Stroke is one of the most frequent causes of dysphagia, a serious symptom triggered by affected coordination of the swallowing muscles or limited sensation. This bachelor thesis focuses on providing a compendium of literature concerned with dysphagia and demonstrating how the symptom occurs after cerebrovascular accident. The first part discusses the swallowing process and stroke from anatomical, physiological and neurophysiological standpoint. Second part presents a closer view of the upper sphincter of esophagus, additional healt problems caused by dysphagia and possibilities of alimentation and brings up a set of the most frequently used diagnostic methods. From chapter 4 and 5 on, the thesis describes methods and technics that can be involved in the treatment of patient with swallowing difficulties and casuistry of a patient suffering from serious dysphagia caused by cerebrovascular accident.
Child raising in an incomplete family
VOJTĚCHOVÁ, Pavla
This bachelor thesis concerns a topic of bringing up children in single-parent families. Theoretical part is firstly about family in general and contemporary problems connected with family. Then it is focused on single-parent family and difficulties of children upbringing in this kind of family and their impact on a child. The main goal of a practical part of this thesis is to find out and compare achieved level of education, educational and professional aspirations and professional employment of individuals originating from complete and single-parent families. The other goal is to find out whether a parent in a single-parent family could be a paragon for professional employment of his/her child. The research survey contained in the practical part used mixed research approach in compliance with the goal. A method of questioning by a half-structured dialogue was used in a qualitative survey part, and a method of questioning by a questionnaire was used in a quantitative survey part. The differences between individuals originating from complete or single-parent family were found in educational and professional aspirations and in achieved level of education. Influence of parent on professional employment is ambiguous.
Securing the airway in pediatric patients at ARO
KUBEKOVÁ, Martina
The thesis titled Securing airways in pediatric patients on ARD deals with the specifics of nursing care of airways. Care of airways of children hospitalised at the Anaesthetic Resuscitation Department is an integral part of comprehensive nursing care. Each nurse must have a sufficient theoretical and practical knowledge, as well as experience to independently perform nursing care of airways of pediatric patients. Free and patent airway is a prerequisite for ensuring one of the basic life functions. The aim of the theoretical part of the thesis was to summarise the issue of securing airway in children and to focus on nursing care for airways in pediatric patients. The aim of the research was to determine the specifics of nursing care for children hospitalised at the Anaesthetic Resuscitation Department due to impaired breathing. Based on the aim of the thesis, the author set out four research questions: 1. What nursing activities are performed by nurses when securing an airway in a child? 2. How nurses treat airways of intubated children? 3. What nursing care do nurses provide for children before, during and after extubation? 4. What nursing care do nurses provide for children with a tracheostomy? In the empirical part of the thesis the author employed qualitative research. Data collection was performed by the use of individual interviews with nurses. The survey was conducted at a pediatric ICU and a children's Anaesthetic Resuscitation Department. Based on the research questions and information obtained from literature sources the author drew up the basic points for interviews with nurses. The interviews were supplemented by an observation performed on a children's Anaesthetic Resuscitation Department. Interviews and observation were complemented with two case reports of pediatric patients. The reports were processed in accordance with Henderson's model. The thesis's results show specifics and difficulties of nursing care of pediatric patients hospitalised at an Anaesthetic Resuscitation Department. The thesis maps nursing care for pediatric patients when securing airway, it focuses on intubation, tracheostomy tube, extubation, aspiration, and care for oral and nasal cavities. The objective of the thesis is to show not only the specifics of this kind of nursing care and also to demonstrate the importance of communication and emotional support to pediatric patients before, during, and after the medical intervention. The intensive nursing care is continuously improving thanks to new methods and devices. The results will be provided to the nursing management of the pediatric ICU and the children's Anaesthetic Resuscitation Department. They will also be presented at professional seminars and in professional journals.
The Specific of Nursing Care in Patient Undergoing the Examination of Bone Marrow
ČOUDKOVÁ, Marie
Haematology is a medical field. It is the study ofblood cells. It studies blood cells from the point of their morphology, quantity and function. The clinical haematology focuses on the irregularities in a patient´s blood and studies how the irregularitiesdiffer from the patient´s normal physiological condition. Due to this work haematology can help with diagnosis of other diseases. In haematology many investigative methods are used. One of them is aspiration and biopsy of bone marrow which is a hematopoietic tissue daily producing a large number of blood cells. Unless the formation of blood cells is sufficient enough, the disabled person may be at risk of their life. When the function of bone marrow is affected the patient may be impinged by serious infections, anemia risk or bleeding tendency. Bone marrow is examined for suspicion of haematological or oncology illnesses. Therefore, it has a very important rolein diagnosis of these. It is performed bya prolonged fever, mainly among the people who have a bad immune system. For blood collection are used investigative methodswhich consist ofaspiration and percutaneous bone marrow biopsy. These physical examinations provide some pieces of information about the condition and the ability of the blood cells´ production of bone marrow. Very important part of this physical examination is a specific nursing care. This bachelor´s thesis is focused on the specific nursing care of the patients who undergo the examinations of bone marrow. This thesis mainly includes the methods of bone marrow harvest, how the patients are informed about the examination of bone marrow, the patients´ nursing care after the operation and the role of a nurse at the haematological ward. The introduction of the theoretical part involves physiology of bone marrow and the study of haematology. The other parts discuss indication for bone marrow examination, haematological and oncological illnesses, bone marrow aspiration or percutaneous biopsy of bone marrow. The large part of the thesis deals with bone marrow aspiration, the process of the operation and the nursing care. It also focuses on percutaneous biopsy of marrow bone where the meaning of the examination and the process of bone marrow harvest operation are explained. At the end of the theoretical part a collection of hematopoietic stem cells from particular peripheral blood in mentioned. The aim of the bachelor thesis was to find out certain specifics of nursing care of the patients who undergo the examination of bone marrow. The following research questions were selected: What are the specifics of nursing care of the patients who undergo trepanobiopsy? What are the specifics of the patients who undergo aspiration (sternal puncture)? What are a preparation and assistance of a nurse during the examination of bone marrow? Which roles does the nurse have during the examination of bone marrow? How are the patients informed about the bone marrowexamination? The practical part includes results from a quantitative survey which was a semi-structured interview. The resulting interviews were written and then were processed by a certified coding technique. The research group comprised six nurses working in the haematological ward and six patients who have undergone the examination of bone marrow. Regarding the gathered results, an information brochure was put forward as a part of the thesis (see Annex number 5) and was oriented especially at patients undergoing the bone marrow examination. The brochure will be proposed for practical use at haematological wards.
