Utilization of waste banana peels for packaging materials

This bachelor thesis deals with isolation of cellulose from waste banana peels and it’s use as a filler in composite films. The aim of this work was to prepare a bioplastic capable of being an eco-friendly alternative to conventional polymers with a potential for application in the packaging industry. The cellulose was isolated from banana peels using a method combination of alkalic and acidic hydrolysis and bleaching by sodium chlorite. The samples after isolation were characterised by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR) and their average particle size was determined by microscope observation. Subsequently, composite films were prepared using agar and starch matrix, glycerol as plasticizer and isolated cellulose as filler in various concentrations to assess the effect of added cellulose on the properties of the resulting bioplastics. Characterization of the prepared bioplastics included FT-IR measurement, surface examination by a scanning electron microscope (SEM) and the determination of mechanical properties by measuring tensile strength, elongation at break and Young’s modulus. It was found that the addition of cellulose from banana peels has a positive effect on the mechanical properties of all prepared agar- or strach-based composites, with the exception of elongation at break in agar films, where there was a slight decrease compared to the reference films.
Hydrogel phantoms for ultrasound diagnostics

This bachelor thesis deals with properties and preparation of hydrogel phantoms used in ultrasound diagnostics. The main object of this work was to get acquainted with the production and problems of phantom models. The theoretical part of the thesis focuses on phantom characterization, the principle of ultrasound, and phantom manufacturing companies. The practical part focuses on production of phantom models in Dansk Fantom Service, and on own production in the laboratory. Then on these phantoms was studied the speed of ultrasound, attenuation, and other physical changes.
Processing of Images of Petri Dishes

This master thesis deals with image processing of Petri dishes. The first part is about terms and procedures in laboratory practice. The following part is about devices and algorithms for image analysis of Petri dishes. The second part is about draft and implementation of own colony counting application, which was developed in cooperation with the microbiological laboratory. The application is developed for mobile devices running Android OS. The master thesis also includes the design and creation of two lighting units, which uses as an accessory for better results in the analysis of Petri dishes. In conclusion are presented results, compared lighting units and various types of mobile devices, on which the application was tested.
Design of leg for crash test dummy

This thesis is devoted to the design model of the lower limbs crash test dummies. It describes how the dummy developed historically, what are currently available for crash tests, what they are made and what their future will be. The main motive of the work is to design a model of lower limb for crash tests, with emphasis on the human anatomy. The work is characterized by how the figurine is produced using the form from material Thermolyne Clear, wood as a substitute human bones and the agar substitutes such as human muscle.

The aim is to formulate and optimize the agar hydrogel preparation procedure, evaluate its acoustic properties and water loss during storage. A dependence was found between the amount of water evaporated during storage (4 weeks at 37 řC) and the glycerol content, which slows down the water loss from the samples in direct proportion. Based on the results, an agar gel (AG) formulation with 1% agar and 60% glycerol was selected for the acoustic properties measurements. During this experiment the microbial stability of AG was confirmed. The results of acoustic parameters measurements were evaluated, namely, speed of the ultrasound, attenuation coefficient and echogenicity of the samples as a function of content of scattering particles Al2O3 and SiC. The theoretical section contains the characterization of gels, their distribution, properties and use in pharmacy, describes agar and its characteristic properties. It also provides brief information on phantoms and describes the agar-based phantom in more detail. The principles of oscillation tests and their evaluation are described. Twelve gels with different agar concentrations were tested: a series of gels without glycerol and a series of gels with glycerol. The structure of the gels was characterized by the test Evaluating product texture using oscillatory testing and te perature stability in the range of 20 ř C to 40 ř C by the Single frequency strain controlled temperature ramp test. The bachelor thesis is elaborated in the form of literary research dealing with industrial use of algae and cyanobacteria. The first part of the thesis is devoted to the description and characteristics of individual algal species and cyanobacteria. The most important species used in the food industry are described here. The second part of the thesis deals with the processing of cyanobacteria and algae used to obtain important raw materials such as agar, carrageenan and alginates. There are also mentioned some types of these organisms used in the farm, in cosmetics production, in aquaculture, in wastewater treatment and as fertilizer and biofuel.
