Analysis of the novel Dracula

In 1897 Bram Stoker published his gothic novel Dracula, which became an immediate phenomenon in its period. The book was published in the 19th century whose society was surrounded by a lot of fear and anxieties from the unknown. My bachelor thesis aimed to analyse this literary work with a closer look at Count Dracula and his homeland Transylvania.

The theme of the bachelor's thesis is an analysis of the evolution and transformation of the vampire character, from beast to idol in popular culture, in response to the cultural - historical development of society. Vampire monster is characterised at work based on Bram Stoker's novel. The analysis of idol is based on books and film adaptations of Stephanie Meyer's works - The Twilight Saga and L.J. Smith - Vampire Diaries.

This these first characterizes the decadent elements of Bram Stoker's novel Dracula in the context of late Victorian literature and generally tries to define the concept of liminality according to the approach of Arnold van Gennep (Rites of Passage) and Victor Turner (The Ritual Process). The core of the work is the interpretation of the category of liminality based on a literary analysis of Stoker's novel, including the identification of motifs and themes related to the term liminality, and the concept of the supernatural and the category of otherness (the uncanny) as defined by S. Freud in Das Unheimliche. The thesis focuses on the topic of crossing the border between the human sphere and the supernatural world and tries to interpret the concept of liminality in the context of the work of the late Victorian period.
From horror character to girl's idol. Vampire in contemporary literature for young adults

This thesis deals with the evolution of vampire as a literary character in contemporary production for young adults. Its aim is not to describe all existing works but to cover only the most interesting representations of a vampire in various epochs. The thesis describes the most influential works building the literary stereotype of a vampire and proposes an evolution line. The crucial works in this genre are: Vampire, Carmilla, Dracula, Interview with a Vampire, The Vampire Diaries, True Blood, Twilight, House of Night, Vampire Academy and Vampire Boardingschool. Based on them we create a typology according to the appearance, character and narrative role of a vampire. The thesis begins with an anthropological introduction, especially with the origin of the vampires in Easteuropean folk tradition. Farther more we deal with most common genres used to enrich the vampire literature and theory of a literary character as a narrative category. The analysis covers the evolution of a vampire character from its naturalistic appearance to its very civilized pole in the contemporary young adults fiction. We close with the chapter describing the character of a vampire as a literary symbol.
The Transformation of perception of vampire in Western culture from early modern period to present : The Assessment of marginal cultural phenomenon in terms of civilization theory of Norbert Elias

The thesis deals with the transformation of perception of vampire in Western culture from early modern period to present. The vampire in modern Western culture is very popular and has an unwavering place. Vampires are now attractive and basically not dangerous. The subject of this work is question whether it was so in previous centuries. Work present the change in appearance and character, both fictional character and "real vampires." Based on the analysis of selected fictional works (literary and visual) from the late 18th century, when the vampire came to Western fiction, work shows how gradually transforms the image that this supernatural beings attributes in West. An essential part of how culture perceives certain phenomenon is a belief in it. Therefore I am interested in how the West over time explaining this phenomenon. Work also introduces the Norbert Elias's civilization theory. Analysis of transformation in the perception of a vampire in Western culture follows it's tracks and the results are compared with it with the goal to give answer on question whether this phenomenon is turning into the terms of this theory.
Bram Stoker's novel Dracula and its film adaptations: A comparative analysis

The master thesis analyses and compares the main characters of three significant works concerning the Dracula theme. It provides a comparison of Bram Stoker's Dracula and its film adaptations, namely Nosferatu - Die Symphonie des Grauens (1922) directed by F. W. Murnaua and Dracula (1992) by F. F. Coppola. The work contrasts the interpretation of a vampire through the character of Dracula, analyses and maps the evolution of female characters in regard to the rules and expectations of society and examines the role of the two most distinct male characters of the story, A. Van Helsing and R. M. Renfield. The three introductory chapters are dedicated to the authors of the works concerned and to the novel and its adaptations, i.e. it describes the circumstances of their conception and their content. The Bram Stoker chapter also comprises a brief characterization and an overview of the gothic novel, the section handling the Nosferatu movie provides a subchapter on expressionist film and the chapter on the work of F. F. Coppola is supplemented with a short outline of the notion of a vampire in pop culture of the 20th century. The topic of this diploma thesis is the development of the character of vampire and its portrayal in literature for children and youth. The thesis focuses on the analysis of five literary works for children and youth written in German language, which portrays the character of a vampire as a main protagonist and its many changes and development. The analysed works are Der kleine Vampir by Angela Sommer-Bodenburg, Das Vamperl by Renate Welsch, Der Spinat Vampir by Gudrun Pausenwang, Pozor, přilétá Molly! by Dagmar H. Mueller a Drákula a já by Andreas Schlütera. The main aim of this thesis is to answer the question of the type of transformation has the character of vampire undergone in the literature for children and youth. Its main goal is not to fully cover all available works in the genre, but to choose the most representative ones which show the different features. The analysis of the change is based on the characteristic of the characters and its goal is to show us the development of the character in contrast to the traditional vampire character. The image of the vampire in popular media

From the beginning of the twenty first century vampires begin to appear in other genres other than the horror and their image in popular media starts to change. The changes begin not only in the image but also the perception of vampire in popular media shifts into new directions. These changes are interconnected and influence each other. The thesis will analyse the ways vampires are portrayed in films and TV series from the end of the twenties century until recent times. The changes happening will be explored across different genres and across time. The thesis will then attempt to examine whether there is a pattern of trends within the observed forms, and whether these trends are common across the different genres.
Vampires in English Literary History

The aim of this bachelor thesis is to examine three vampire novels written by prominent English authors during the nineteenth century, when the Gothic genre began and became popular. The authors in question are John Polidori and his work The Vampyre, Joseph Sheridan Le Fanu and his work Carmilla and Bram Stoker and his famous work Dracula. This thesis concentrates on comparing the elements of the stories and the figures of vampires themselves.
