Faltis, Tadeáš ; Lánský, Ondřej (advisor) ; Prokschová, Daniela (referee)
This work explores the relationship between the economic crisis of 2008 and the rise of populism in Southern European countries. The study employs a method of literature review, analysis of sociological data on the impact of the economic crisis, and an examination of successful populist parties in selected Southern European states. In the first part of the work, populism and economic crisis are defined, followed by an exploration of the relationship between these two concepts and possible methods for dating the rise of populism. The subsequent section characterizes the Southern European region and specific selected countries, namely Greece, Spain, and Italy. The focus is primarily on their structural problems that may be linked to the growth of populism. In the main part of the work, the impacts of the economic crisis on the selected states are analyzed, initially from an economic and social perspective and subsequently from a political standpoint. The concluding section of the work zooms in on the rise of populism in the selected states. Using the examples of the three most successful populist parties - Greek SYRIZA, Spanish Podemos, and the Italian Five Star Movement - the study seeks common denominators for their ascent. In conclusion, the work identifies historical structural problems, the...

Development of demographic ageing in Italy and Spain
Illáš, Matej ; Kurtinová, Olga (advisor) ; Fialová, Ludmila (referee)
Development of demographic ageing in Italy and Spain Abstract This paper aims to describe and compare the process of demographic ageing and its components in Italy and Spain from 1960 to the present day. Demographic ageing is analyzed in the paper mainly through the share of the population over 65 years old, the old-age dependency ratio, and the median age. The main data source for this work is the Eurostat database. At the beginning of the observed period, Italy had only marginally higher values of demographic ageing indicators. However, during the observed interval, when both countries aged significantly, a much more significant difference was created between the countries. According to population projections, this difference should probably decrease by 2050, but both countries are expected to continue ageing. Keywords: demographic ageing, population ageing, age structure, Italy, Spain Character count (without spaces): 77 884

Catalan identity and nationalism from the perspective of Catalan and Spanish political parties between 2014 and 2017
Pěkná, Adéla ; Kasáková, Zuzana (advisor) ; Tomalová, Eliška (referee)
The period from 2014 to 2017 was marked in Catalonia by many events and tensions surrounding independence issues. This work "Catalan identity and nationalism from the perspective of Catalan and Spanish political parties between 2014 and 2017" aims to find out how identity themes are captured in the programs of political parties across the entire political spectrum in Catalonia, i. e. in the programs of both national and Catalan parties, and whether the processing of these themes leads to a clear interpretation of Catalan identity or problematizes it. The work is based on the interpretation of the nation according to Anthony D. Smith and the national identity derived from it, expanded with linguistic themes and cultural peculiarities of the community of nations according to Eric J. Hobsbawm. The application of thematic analysis on the political proclamations were identified based on the formulation of these parties' national-identity perception of Catalonia. The basic source are the election programs of the Catalan political parties. This work concludes that the themes represented by the national-identity issue in the program of Catalan political parties are language, protection of cultural heritage and territorial identity. However, processing these topics does not lead to a clear interpretation of...
"Not in our name": The Melilla Tragedy as a case study of partisan media coverage of migration in the Spanish southern border
Vidal Rico, Marina ; Neag, Annamária (advisor) ; Macková, Veronika (referee)
The term "Melilla tragedy" is usually used to refer to the events of the 24th of June 2022, when the attempted crossing to the Spanish side of the Melilla border by a group of around 2.000 Sub-Saharan migrants resulted in at least 25 deaths. Hoping to contribute to the understanding of the coverage of migration in polarized media environments, the present study looks at articles focused on these events published by Spanish national media across the political spectrum. Through a Multimodal Critical Discourse Analysis approach, 16 opinion pieces published by El País, El Mundo, El Confidencial, and elDiario.es were critically examined in search of relevant conclusions on the influence of media partisanship in the media's reporting on the Southern border, and differences between the short and long-term reporting on the events. Results of this analysis point to ideology-based differences in the portrayal of migrants and the border and an overall tendency to talk about migration from a political standpoint, even more so in the long term.
Anti-pandemic measures in a comparative perspective (Spain - Czech Republic)
De La Cruz, Christopher-Alexander ; Handrlica, Jakub (advisor) ; Adamec, Martin (referee)
Anti-pandemic measures in a comparative perspective (Spain - Czech Republic) Abstract The pandemic of the covid-19 disease, caused by a previously unknown type of coronavirus known professionally as SARS-CoV-2, hit our country in early March 2020. At that time, perhaps no one could have guessed what awaited us all in the coming months and years. As this was a pandemic on a global scale, we were not the only ones facing the toughest stress test of modern healthcare emergency regulations. In its own way, the Kingdom of Spain, for example, was also dealing with a pandemic in the following two and a half years, and I have decided to compare the Czech approach to that. In the first part of my master's thesis, I discuss how the legal systems of both countries were prepared for a health emergency of this magnitude. In order to establish a general framework, I first highlight the main legal differences between the Spanish and the Czech state. I then discuss the theoretical grounding of states of emergency. Next, I go through the legal framework at the constitutional level, followed by the statutory and sub-statutory levels, comparing the different norms and trying to find parallels between them. I observe in particular the great fragmentation of the legal regulation of health emergencies on the Spanish side and the...
