Icesave dispute and Icelandic EU application
Tůmová, Kateřina ; Váška, Jan (advisor) ; Hořejšová, Tereza (referee)
The bachelor thesis analyzes the influence of the Icesave dispute on the EU application and answers a research question, if the dispute poses an essential threat to Icelandic membership in the EU. The conflict over the Icesave debt began after the collapse of Icelandic banking system during the global economic crisis in 2008. Icesave was an online brand by the bank Landsbanki, which provided savings account in the United Kingdom and the Netherlands. The biggest problem in the dispute was reimbursement of the Icesave debt, which should Iceland paid for to both of the countries due to the Icelandic membership in the European Economic Area and on the base of the EU directive on deposit-guarantee schemes. The first chapter of this bachelor thesis is dealing with a development of the Icelandic financial crisis and with an excursion to the Icelandic banking system. The cause of the Icelandic financial crisis wasn't the global economic crises itself but also the unsustainable size of the Icelandic banking sector. The following chapter contains origins and development of the Icesave dispute and its international dimension. The third chapter is dealing with Icelandic EU application (July 2009). And the last chapter is the analysis of possibilities, how the Icesave dispute can thwart the EU membership, and...
The Main Determinants of European Trade Integration
Spivacenco, Carolina ; Vacek, Pavel (advisor) ; Dingová, Vilma (referee)
The importance of international trade cannot be neglected as it represents an important channel of wealth creation in the actual globalised world. Thus, the present writer aims to identify how the commercial flows have changed after the adoption of Euro and once the financial crisis has burst. Furthermore the main factors that influence trade are researched by using the gravitational econometric model and employing panel data for 14 EU member countries. The results show that the intensity of commercial exchanges are highly influenced by the level of development (GDP) of the country and the amount of FDI that are attracted, while the use of a common currency appears to be not too significant. At the same time, indicators are more sensible during the crisis period than the stable one, hence even small changes in independent variables can lead to higher decrease in trade. Key words: European trade, liberalization, competitiveness, financial crisis, contagion, Euro, gravitational model.
Determinants forming attitudes of selected political parties from EU27 countries to the Turkish enlargement of the EU
Hendrych, Radek ; Šlosarčík, Ivo (advisor) ; Kostelka, Filip (referee)
The present thesis analyzes possible determinants shaping attitudes of selected relevant political parties from the EU27 Member States to the potential Turkish accession to the European Union. Bilateral relationships between the EU and the Turkish Republic have been evolving multifariously and long-windedly. However, the question of the direct Turkish participation in the EU's project remains unresolved, and still resonates across all stakeholders. The phenomenon of the eventual Turkish joining is a very topical issue. In particular, the views of the political parties on this particular problem are studied, since these subjects operate with an exclusive position in representative democracies. They symbolize the necessary interconnection between the state and society. Moreover, in the context of the eventual EU enlargement to Turkey, they will likely discuss its confirmation in parliamentary procedures, or they will mobilize voters and form their attitudes in the case of ratification referenda. The present thesis distinguishes between two main groups of explanatory variables. In regarding to the accepted theoretical framework, these are supposed to explicate the views of the selected political parties on the eventual Turkish enlargement qualifiedly. Particularly, the ideological and (general)...
IPA Bridge on the Danube: Cross-border Co-operation and Social Reconstruction in Slavonia and Vojvodina
Vienne, Cassiopee ; Králová, Kateřina (advisor) ; Kasáková, Zuzana (referee)
The relations between Croatia and Serbia are determining for regional peace and stability and for the course of the EU enlargement in the Western Balkans. The Instrument for Pre-accession Assistance (IPA) is the funding mechanism designed for the implementation of the EU's enlargement policy in the Western Balkans. This research investigates the extent to which IPA has integrated to the local cross- border initiatives in culture and youth and has fostered social reconstruction between Croats and Serbs in Slavonia (Croatia) and Vojvodina (Serbia). Co-operation in the cultural sector is an important element of social reconstruction, as it favours contacts and the erosion of antagonistic prejudices against the other ethnic group. The objective of this research is defined as two-fold, firstly to test a model of cross-border co-operation devised from EU integration theories and, secondly to provide an accurate picture of the cross-border initiatives in Slavonia and Vojvodina based on ground-level experience. The analysis of the data collected shows mixed results. On one hand IPA has integrated successfully into the landscape of local cross-border initiatives by stimulating socialisation between civil society organisations. IPA has also increased local ownership of cross-border co-operation amongst the...

Polish immigrants in the United Kindom after 2004
Prouzová, Marie ; Kasáková, Zuzana (advisor) ; Klípa, Ondřej (referee)
Bachelor dissertation "Polish Immigrants in the United Kingdom after 2004" deals with one of the most important current migration flows within the European Union and its effects. The time limit of this dissertation is from the EU enlargement of 2004 to 2010, when the Labour government of that era lost the UK general election. The number of Polish immigrants who came after the enlargement of 2004 increased the existing Polish diaspora several times over. Nationals of newly accessed countries were allowed to work in Britain (in contrast to most major countries) without any additional work permits. That was one of the reasons why many more immigrants came into this country compared to predictions. The dissertation deals with types of employment of Polish immigrants in the UK labour market and whether these immigrants have had a positive or negative impact on British economy. It examines the social context of this migration including the socio-demographic profile of the immigrants. Further it looks at perception of this migration flow by the British population and the integration of Poles within British society.

Czech-German Economic Ties: The Relevance of the Neofunctionalist Approach in the Contemporary Socio-Economic Context
Janíčko, Martin ; Kučerová, Irah (advisor) ; Zemplinerová, Alena (referee)
The thesis was most importantly concerned with the intensity of economic ties between the Czech Republic and Germany from 2004 enlargement, using neofunctionalist approach framework as a theoretical background. Two main hypotheses have been tested and the effects of financial and economic crisis have been also taken into account. We can affirm, based on the observed data and analysis made, that the intensity of economic ties has grown substantially since 2004 as well as the synchronization of the business cycles. Much of these effects could be attributed to the practical working of neofunctionalist premises. This is demonstrated by the fact the EU integration leads to a more significant interconnection in many spheres of economic activity that in turn affect the whole economic development and determination. Economic reciprocity has in general strengthened the political one, which is now being perceived on quite many political levels. However, more or less exogenous effects of the financial and economic crisis of 2008 and 2009 have led to a relatively visible slowdown in further integration and interconnection. From this reason, we can ask ourselves a pertinent question to what extent the integration is about to continue and what will be its impact on political relations of both countries in the...

Turkey and the EU: Analysis of the factors hindering and driving the accession process
Lukačovič, Lukáš ; Rolenc, Jan Martin (advisor) ; Knotková, Vladimíra (referee)
The aim of this work is to analyse the factors that affect the candidacy of Turkey to the European Union. The thesis is divided into two chapters, the first of which presents Turkey's own national development and its relations with the European Communities from a historical perspective. This chapter is supplemented with insights into the current situation of the accession chapters. The second part is devoted to the current and specific factors that have potential to influence the accession process. The most nominated include fear of Islam, lacking respect for human rights, economic aspects, unsolved case of Cyprus and others. These factors are selected on the basis of the frequency of their inclusion in publications and other sources. However, they are not evaluated in terms of the EU criteria, but the thesis brings a general view on the issue. The work thus gives the reader the opportunity to create a complete picture of contemporary Turkey and its efforts to join the EU.
