The Experience of Nonbinary Individuals with Self-Presentation and Gender Expression (from a Phenomenological Perspective)
Novotný, Ondřej ; Smetáčková, Irena (advisor) ; Macháčková, Marcela (referee)
This bachelor's thesis explores lived experiences of individuals who identify as non-binary, both in personal spheres and social interactions. It defines the concept of gender and examines related concepts such as its development, roles, stereotypes, and its socially constructed nature, as well as its interaction with social and personal identity. It briefly touches on androgyny and gender-aschematicity and their potential positive impact on society through reducing the salience of gender stereotypes, by promoting more flexible notions of gender. In the empirical section, the thesis analyses the narratives of four non- binary informants (obtained through semi-structured interviews) using interpretive phenomenological analysis. It specifically focuses on self-presentation and gender expression in relation to authenticity, studying the interaction between the self and the social environment. The thesis highlights the variability in experiences among these four individuals and summarizes their experiences into emergent themes and subthemes. Through description and interpretation, it seeks to elucidate and explain the individual experiences of the informants. Various common themes arise, such as: (1) the relationship between pressure exerted on the individual and the perceived need to challenge...
The identity and social interactions of nonbinary adolescents
Divišová, Nikola ; Smetáčková, Irena (advisor) ; Taušová, Jitka (referee)
The diploma thesis focuses on the identity, gender experience, and social interactions of young nonbinary people in the Czech Republic. The research aims to contribute to filling a gap in Czech scientific literature and to improve our understanding of nonbinary people's experiences, which is necessary for psychological practice with nonbinary clients. In relation to this aim, the thesis has three objectives. To understand the concept of gender and one's own gender identity among young nonbinary persons in the Czech Republic. To explore what factors play a role in the choice of a label for one's gender identity and how nonbinary persons think about different identities. As for our final goal, we set out to explore the effects of choosing a specific label on social interactions. The theoretical part of the thesis focuses on identity, nonbinary gender, language, and the social experiences of nonbinary people. As part of the empirical part, we conducted eleven interviews with non-binary people aged 18-23, which were then analysed using reflexive thematic analysis. This resulted in four themes: "I exist the way I want," "To make it easier," "It's an option," and "Relationship with masculinity and femininity." Based on our analysis, the research questions were then answered. The thesis showed that...
Preferred gender pronouns from the journalistic ethics point of view on the example of Czech news sites
Netíková, Magdaléna ; Klabíková Rábová, Tereza (advisor) ; Schneiderová, Soňa (referee)
This bachelor thesis observes the way Czech news sites inform about people with preferred gender pronouns other than he/him or she/her. Its goal is to investigate the possibilities of a gender-neutral language in Czech and in what ways they can be applied in journalistic practice. Implementing qualitative interviews with editors of Czech news sites, I aimed to find out what their experiences are with editing texts that report on, for example, transgender or non-binary person. Among other things, I was interested in whether the respondent's wish to use their preferred pronouns would be respected by the journalist, whether there is a discussion between the author and the editor regarding the appropriate language, and who has the last word in the newsroom regarding this topic. Based on the interviews, the factors affecting journalists' approach to reporting on transgender and non-binary people were presented, and it was stated that the topic of different gender identities can in its current form be considered an ethical problem, as well as a linguistic problem.
"Blurring Gender": Negotiating Non-binary and Gender Non-conforming Identities in the Czech Republic
Lorca, Alexander ; Kolářová, Kateřina (advisor) ; Dvořáčková, Jana (referee)
The master's thesis "Blurring Gender": Negotiating Non-binary and Gender Non-conforming Identities in the Czech Republic operates within the field of Queer Studies. It focuses on the creation, articulation, negotiation and understanding of non-binary*, agender and gender nonconforming (GNC) Identities. An important aspect of the thesis is that it analyzes the understanding of these gender self-identifications through semi-structured interview with people who themselves identify as non-binary*, agender or gender nonconforming. Through this, the thesis lends a voice to people whose gender identity is not accepted by society. It is important to better understand and capture the complexities of negotiating and creating non- binariness. The main research questions are: How do non-binary* or gender nonconforming people from the Czech Republic formulate their identity? How do they enact their identity? What do non-binary/gender-nonconforming people from the Czech Republic prefer in public and in privacy? How do their GNC/non-binary identities affect their relationships? Using qualitative content analysis, the thesis attempts to penetrate into the meanings that non- binary/agender and GNC people describe in articulating their identities and uncover/name the oppressive forces they face in everyday life....
