Czechs and Germans in Prague: a competition of associational life at the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries
Kočárková, Kateřina ; Zelená, Alena (advisor) ; Emler, David (referee)
The work is devoted to Czech-German coexistence in Prague, at the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries. In 1848, the Czechs found themselves in the involuntary role of supporters of the Austro-Hungarian Empire, within which the Czech-speaking population had to live alongside the Germans, who also belonged to the territory. The coexistence of the two nations was unproblematic, rather variable, which was also reflected in the political and social spheres of life. The Czech-German coexistence was important for the development of the associational life. The creation and subsequent competition of these associations are the focus of this thesis. Three Czech institutions which were important for the contemporary cultural and social life and which had an analogous German pair were selected: The National Theatre and the New German Theatre, the Arco Cafe and the Union, and the Deutsches Casino together with the Měšťanská beseda. Their friendly and hostile tendencies and competition between them were examined.

Jakubčíková, Iveta ; Kalfiřtová, Eva (advisor) ; Müllerová, Eva (referee)
This bachelor thesis regards the subject of Comédie-Française, the world's oldest national theatre. Comédie-Française is the only French national theatre with its own troupe of actors and a repertoire of over 3000 theatre plays. The aim of this thesis was to create a modern, compact, Czech-written description of the theatre's history, the differences between its 3 stages and its largely rigid hierarchy structure. The thesis furthermore questioned and tried to answer the competitive ability of a theatre house with a tradition as old as nearly 350 years and a very elaborate system of rules in an era of new media. The history of the theatre begins in 1680, when Comédie-Française was found by a royal decree of Louis XIV. Comédie-Française played an influential role in the arising new art movements, the revolutions and political changes in French society in the course of three centuries. Even though the most recent audience-studies in Comédie-Française were reported in the last century and therefore it is difficult to define today's typical spectator, the theatre did not experience any decline in visitors on average in the last 20 years, which is among other caused by the pro-active approach to reaching younger audiences. 40% of audience members exclusively visits Comédie-Française. F. A. Šubert 1849 - 1915
Drexler, Otto ; Pokorná, Magdaléna (advisor) ; Beneš, Zdeněk (referee)
This bachelor thesis deals with the biography of one important personality at the end of the 19th century - František Adolf Šubert, who was in the post of the Director of National Theatre in Prague in years 1883-1900. The main focus of the thesis is Šubert's public life and his career, as well as on his position within Czech cultural society, in the wider context of the era of that time changing Czech society and theatrical culture perception. It deals with the question, why F. A. Šubert was a subject of criticism from the journalists already during his active career as a director, and why he has never been recognized as one of the let's say "cultural heroes" of that epoch. The base of the work lies in the spring of the year 1900 - which was the year of Šubert's abdication (together with the whole theatre management). The work deals also with Šubert's personal life, which influenced his ideas and persuasion, too. This thesis is based on the then print, pieces of specialized and memoir literature, partly also archival materials (the access to the last mentioned was due to several factors rather limited).
