“Tis beautiful in the spa towns, since one finds much pleasure there for one´s health to suit one´s tastes.” The Spa Town Topos in Czech Literature in the 19th Century
Fránek, Michal
Spa towns represented a space where the middle and higher classes could take in the relaxing effects of various healing procedures but they were also important locations for making social contacts, having fun and enjoying leisurely activities not the last of which included lovers´ trysts. Our essay attempts to examine how these aspects of spa town life appeared in Czech journalism of the time (B. Němcová, J. Neruda), in literary fiction (A. V. Šmilovský, I. Klicpera, T. Nováková, F. X. Svoboda etc.) and in the opera (L. Janáček: Fate). The work also monitors how Czech and German competition and efforts to create their own, purely Czech spa town of Luhačovice, figures in literary representations.

Jan Neruda, the theater critic
Kášová, Michala ; Topolová, Barbara (advisor) ; Just, Vladimír (referee)
The topic of this bachelor thesis is the theatre critiques and essays of Jan Neruda dedicated to Provisional Theatre, which functioned in the years 1862 - 1883. In the first part of my thesis, I am presenting Neruda's journalistic work, while further I describe the form, style and topics of his critical treatise. I tried to classify his critical works into the social, political and cultural context by using secondary literature and by including selected passages from his critiques. I present significant celebrities of Provisional Theatre, as well as important leading personalities and milestones in the development of this theatre. Neruda dealt thoroughly with practical aspects of staging and he closely observed the acting work. In his critiques he described general acting principles of the late romanticism with occasional realistic tendencies, but he also commented on concrete theatrical and non-theatrical phenomena. His importance lies in the consistent critical observation of the practical theatrical aspects, which he pursued with sustained journalistic regularity and thoroughness. With his theoretic work he helped to achieve the professionalization of the first Czech systematically operating theatre and he portrayed it for future generations.
Three kinds of railway-shortstory: Neruda, Lier, Geislová
ŽOUŽELKOVÁ, Lenka
The barchelor thesis is focused on the theme of the landscape and its reception during the 19th century by the author and by the reader. We dealt with the experiance, how we gain it and how it changes itself. We also dealt with the fact, that the true nature can not be reproduced and how it always contains our interpretation. We also mentioned, that the author puts his ideas into the landscape and by that the lanscape gains new meaning. We also introduced the development of landscape depiction through individual styles of 19th century. We focused the most on patriotism added into the landscape. Then we wrote about the railroad and about the different views on it in the real world and in the literature. Then we defined the most common motives in the literature. We finished our thesis by analyzing texts by Jan Neruda (Trhani, Kassandra), by Jan Lier (Hop-la!, On the Edge) and by Irma Geisslová (People on Railroad). We analyzed how these authors wrote and how they differed each other.
Na vlnách života. Literární topos taneční zábavy v polovině sedmdesátých let 19. století
Hrdina, Martin
Use of Jan Neruda's Texts in Literature Classes
Mrázková, Miloslava ; Klumparová, Štěpánka (advisor) ; Hník, Ondřej (referee)
The theoretical part of the master's thesis first deals with the context of Jan Neruda's life and work and with the representation of Neruda's texts in post-revolutionary reading books for junior high school and high school. This part is based on the results presented in the author's bachelor's thesis Work of Jan Neruda in reading books. The next chapter follows the formation of Jan Neruda's image in literature textbooks for junior high school and high school published after 1989. The analysis of reading books and textbooks shows the remaining emphasis on the writer's poetic work even though his contribution to the field of feuilleton and modern prose is considered to be more important. The results of this analysis are used to elucidate the aim of the thesis, which is a new selection of Neruda's texts and the creation of the author's own textbook explanatory texts emphasizing the writer's feuilletons and prose work. The practical part of the thesis contains a questionnaire "mini-research" of pupils' and students' preconceptions regarding the personality and work of Jan Neruda. This research together with another "mini-research" of different teachers' conceptions of teaching about Jan Neruda form the basis for accomplishing the aims of the thesis. The last chapter contains the author's selection of...
