History in computer games: case study on "Valiant Hearts: The Great War"

This thesis is a case study analysis of the visualization of history in computer games. The analyzed game, Valiant Hearts: The Great War, was published by the French company Ubisoft in 2014. The game is set in The First World War and was developed in cooperation with The Centenary Parnership Proram. The main goals of the thesis are following: First, determine if the vision of history in the game reflects the current paradigms of French historiography of The First World War. Second, to identify and to interpret particularities and deformations in the way the game recreates history. The first, theoretical chapter presents the phenomenon of The First World War in the French context, the study of computer games and the methodology of the analysis. For the analysis I have created my own methodology which combines various approaches used elsewhere. Chapter 2 contains the analysis, which is further structured into the analysis of the story from the perspective of the main characters and locations (2.1), analysis of the object inventory and the in game miniencyclopedia (2.2), and the analysis of game's style and form -the graphic and audio style, along with the issue of player freedom (2.3). The Balfour Declaration and the McMahon Letters. Great Britain and the Near East during the Great War.

Bachelor thesis The Balfour Declaration and the McMahon Letters. Great Britain and the Near East during the Great War analyses the promises of the United Kingdom to Arabs and Jews from the First World War contained in the McMahon Letters and in the Balfour Declaration relating in particular to the territory of the Middle East. It focuses on the circumstances of the formation of these documents, both on the contemporary conditions and the objectives to be achieved by them. It also deals with the wording of these documents and the contents of the British promises, while questioning whether it would be possible to realize them simultaneously or they were excluding each other. The opening chapter presents the situation of the Ottoman Empire, Arab nationalism, Zionism, and the empire of the United Kingdom until the beginning of the First World War. The second chapter explains the British interest that influenced the formulation of these documents. The third chapter discusses the emergence of the McMahon Letters and the Balfour Declaration and examine their contents.

Mobilization of the Austro-Hungarian Army during the Great War in the Czech Lands

During the entire Great War, Austria-Hungary mobilized more than one and a half million men in the Czech lands. Out of service in the Austro-Hungarian army, a third never returned home. Czechs and Germans - the greatest nations represented in the Czech lands of the time - fought and suffered side by side on the Great War fronts. Yet only part of them were honoured at the end of the war. The newly created Czechoslovakia built its existence on a new, legitimate image of the Great War, as a struggle for the freedom and independence of the Czechs, represented by Czechoslovak legionaries. In addition, the grief of the bleeding of an entire generation of men was obscured by the joy of the disintegration of Austria-Hungary and the newly formed Czechoslovak state. The fate and suffering of most Czechs and Germans serving in the Austro-Hungarian army, in the army of their homeland, have been downplayed by the depiction of these soldiers as "Švejkové" or deserters. That is why this work deals exclusively with the experiences of soldiers from Czech lands in the Austro-Hungarian army, by the introduction of their war life, mobilization. Czechoslovak Exile Resistance Movement in 1918 from the View of the Realistic Theorie

The aim of this bachelor thesis is to clarify the role played by units of the Czechoslovak Legion in recognition of the Czechoslovak Foreign Resistance Movement by the Entente Powers. For the formulation of hypotheses were used postulates of classical realism by H. Morgenthau that highlight the crucial role of military force in assessing the relevance of international political actors. Therefore, the empirical part of this study firstly describes the evolution of military units that were formed immediately after the outbreak of war on the initiative of Czech and Slovak compatriots abroad. The political leadership of Czechoslovak Independence Movement after a dispute about the goals and means of resistance formed in the year 1916 to the Czechoslovak National Council. However, Entente Powers had until mid- 1918 interest in maintaining the Austro-Hungarian Empire , which they considered as an important element of the balance of power in Central Europe. The turning point in their thinking occurred in connection with the revolt of the Czechoslovak Legions in Russia against the Bolsheviks in May 1918.
