The Relationship between Redemption and Emancipation in the Political Theology of J. B. Metz
Ort, Jakub ; Macek, Petr (advisor) ; Keřkovský, Pavel (referee)
This thesis, called The Relationship between Redemption and Emancipation in the Political Theology of J. B. Metz, concerns the political theology of J. B. Metz. The first part summarizes the influences, which shaped his theological thinking and it presents his concept of political theology. The next part asks a question about the relationship between the ideas of redemption and emancipation in Metz's theology. This is based on the interpretation of a chapter from his book, Glaube in Geschichte und Gesellschaft, which concerns the topic. But before the interpretation of Metz's text, the problems of relationship between the two terms and of their origin are described. The extent of the field of meaning of the term "emancipation" is illustrated by the examples of the thinking of Immanuel Kant, Karl Marx and Jürgen Habermas. A large part is dedicated to the figures of the Frankfurt school, Theodor Adorno and Walter Benjamin, and their specific approach to the idea of emancipation and the Enlightenment tradition. The final thesis rejects the opinion, that the ideas of emancipation and redemption in Metz's theology coincide too much and it puts stress on the importance of the term "history of suffering" for solving this problem of Metz's theology. Keywords political theology, J. B. Metz, emancipation,...
Contribution of Frankfurt School to Critical Marketing Studies
Plíhalová, Eliška ; Rosenfeldová, Jana (advisor) ; Schneiderová, Soňa (referee)
The objective of this thesis is to uncover the basics of the contribution of Frankfurt School to critical marketing scholarship. Three questions were set down to meet this objective: Do the critical marketing scholars refer to the work of Frankfurt School? How do they view their theory, do they take it as a basis for their work or do they contest it instead? And are they exploring similar topics? The method of this thesis is a literature review, employed not only as a mere data gathering tool detecting articles that have elaborated Frankfurt School's ideas, but also applied to provide the reader with meaning-making, analysing understanding, interpretation and comparison. Therefore, a convenience sampling was used. While the descriptive part concerns Frankfurt School and presents selected writings, the analytical part juxtaposes these ideas with articles of critical marketing scholars. The analytical portion was sorted into following thematic areas, based on keywords derived from Tadajewski (2010): adopting critical view, materialism, consumer culture, consumer sovereignty, hegemonic role of the market and research assumptions. Clear analogies between approaches, topics and overall ethos have been detected between both disciplines and are emphasised throughout the paper.
From Adorno to Habermas: A Study on the Relationship of Critical Theory and Religion
Hlaváček, Karel ; Balon, Jan (advisor) ; Halík, Tomáš (referee) ; Hauser, Michael (referee)
In this text, the relation of critical theory and religion is analysed, comparing Jürgen Habermas's late philosophy with the philosophy of his predecessor Theodor W. Adorno. The question I ask is: What changes has the relation of critical theory and religion undergone in the transition from Adorno's thinking to that of his successor? As I try to answer this question, I develop a specific understanding of Adorno's philosophy as a "contemplative eschatology", and perform an in-depth study of how, why, and with what consequences it has changed to a frame oriented towards reaching understanding. In so doing, I point out the ambivalence which the turn towards understanding breeds, and suggest the religious motives discovered in Adorno's work deserve further attention.
The Origins of Totalitarianism Viewed by First Generation of Critical Theorists
Danovská, Krista ; Balon, Jan (advisor) ; Tuček, Milan (referee)
The goal of the thesis is analysis of the origin of the totalitarian system in the work of Theodor Adorno, Erich Fromm, Max Horkheimer, and Herbert Marcuse, as representatives of the theoretical framework of critical theory. The analysis is carried out both in terms of the individual - the text works with the researches of the authors working with the concept of the authoritarian character - and in the analysis of societal factors leading to an undemocratic systém using texts following the philosophy of history. Work explores the overall context of the operating of selected authors, because the situation, during which the first generation of critical theorists formed their works was an important factor which influenced their thinking. The findings from selected studies include the fact that people with lower social status are more susceptible to tend towards a totalitarian system with strong authoritarian elements. Results from two different research one before the war and postwar one show that propensity for undemocratic system is rife. Texts dedicated to the philosophy of history show that modern capitalism and enlightened society elements are leading to totalitarianism. The authors leave this topic after their return to Frankfurt to a renewed Institute for Social Research.

Neo-Marxism and psychoanalysis as a source and inspiration of Frankfurt School
ŠACHLOVÁ, Tereza
In my thesis I will pursue the ideological foundations of the Frankfurt School, a significant social philosophical group of the 20th century. Marxist and psychoanalytic basis will be reflected in conjunction with a critical theory of society and a phenomenon of culture industry. The purpose of this work is to present influences which formed a theoretical work of the Frankfurt School, its research in a modern society and a contribution to the so-called commodification of culture and art related to the expansion of mass culture.
