The initiation novel as a genre and its elements in selected novels by Hermann Hesse
Smrkovský, Michal ; Markvartová, Eva (advisor) ; Glosíková, Viera (referee)
The theoretical part of this master thesis is based on the literary genre of the initiation novel, as presented by Daniela Hodrová. In an effort to gain a deeper insight into the novel's typical figures and spatial motifs, the theoretical part also contains a summary of archetypes described by C. G. Jung. In the practical part, principles of the initiation genre are demonstrated on the novels Demian and Steppenwolf written by the German author Hermann Hesse. The aim of the thesis is to provide a proof that the two novels can be assigned to the initiation novel genre and also to make use of the means presented in the theoretical part for an analysis of the initiation of the protagonists. The initiation in Demian is presented as a precursor of the initiation described in Steppenwolf. Therefore, the result of this thesis is also an attempt to present the philosophical connection between the analysed novels. Characters of Space in the Trilogy Trýznivé město by Daniela Hodrová
Macháčková, Klára ; Bílek, Petr (advisor) ; Wiendl, Jan (referee)
This bachelor thesis aims to interpret the trilogy Trýznivé město (subsuming parts called Podobojí, Kukly and Théta) by the Czech novelist and literary scholar Daniela Hodrová. A complex structure of the novel is in the analysis "opened" through the categories of space and characters; an axis of the thesis is the idea that in the poetics of D. Hodrová, some places can acquire certain features of living creatures (such as memory, free will, temper etc.) and vice versa, that some characters can coalesce with the space they inhabit. In spite of a firm mutual connection between the two categories, they will be discussed separately, in the following order: after having defined the background (using mainly theoretical works of D. Hodrová as secondary sources), firstly, we will focus on the localization of particular topoi (i.e. "literary loaded" places, e.g. the mountain, the pass, the abyss etc.) and on the description of their connotations in terms of the general sense of the trilogy; the attention will be also given to the non-topographical places (i.e. objects or parts of the body). Then, we will consider the issue of characters, primarily their ambivalent status between personalities, though fictional, and mere literary constructs performing certain functions, and also their transformations...

From Metafiction to Self-reflexive Narration ( Theory and Praxtice of Self-disclosing Fiction in Czech Literature)
Trpka, Vladimír ; Trávníček, Jiří (advisor) ; Češka, Jakub (referee) ; Kubíček, Tomáš (referee)
From Metafiction to Self-reflexive Narration (Theory and Practice of Self-disclosing Fiction in Czech Literature) Mgr. Vladimír Trpka Abstract The doctoral thesis deals with metafiction as a key theoretical concept influencing both theoretical contemplations on self-reflexivity in narrative fiction and interpretation of the development of self-reflexive practice in literature. The main objective, based on an analysis of the most influential theoretical approaches to narrative self-reflexivity, is to propose such concepts of metafiction and self-reflexive narration that could be applied in the analysis of the self-reflexive practice in the Czech narrative fiction. The theoretical part focuses on examining the relationship between metafiction and narrative self- reflexivity. Metafiction is viewed as a concept that has not only replaced the concept of self-conscious novel, but it has also adapted it to the postmodern conception of fiction. The concept of fictionality in the theoretical concept of metafiction is directly related to postmodern discourse in which this concept was born. Consequently, an explicitly formulated and/or hidden relationship with constructivist philosophy of language, performativity, and linguistic nature of reality is found in the existing approaches to metafiction. Thus if the...

Tripoint. Motive of the city in the Daniela Hodrová's and Michal Ajvaz's novel.
Špádová, Barbora ; Činátlová, Blanka (advisor) ; Heczková, Libuše (referee)
This thesis deals with the motive of the city in the Daniela Hodrova trilogy (Tryznive mesto - The Doleful City) and in the Michal Ajvaz novel (Druhe mesto - The Other City). It focuses on differences and details in the motive treatment, follows the topological line of the concrete sujets, notices the role of the centre, the periphery, the border and the trace in both books. Author of the thesis inspects the notion of 'the inner city' - not only the 'inner place' within the motive of the city, but also the 'house vs. home' opposition. Large space is given to the poetic of city myths in both authors.
