Predatory Behaviour in Transportation Sector - "Czech Railways v. Leo Express" case
Slámová, Iva ; Vacek, Pavel (advisor) ; Schwarz, Jiří (referee)
It is important to control whether dominant companies in particular market sectors follow laws and rules and do not abuse their dominance at the expense of weaker companies. This behaviour is likely to damage current or avoid the entry of new competitors, shrink the competition and set the environment for price changes the consumer is exposed to. The thesis clarifies the theoretical aspect of this issue and tries to apply it on the real case from the railway transport sector in order to describe the procedure of defining relevant market and market share and investigating the abusive behaviour. A questionnaire survey among railway passeners is an integral part of the thesis. JEL Classification D21, D22, K21, L11, L12, L40 Keywords Predatory prices, relevant market, SSNIP test, railway transport, Czech Railways Author's e-mail Iva-Slamova@seznam.cz Supervisor's e-mail vacek@fsv.cuni.cz
Construction of the Single European Railway Area: Reforms of railway sector in the Czech Republic 2004-2014.
Volf, Jaromír ; Nigrin, Tomáš (advisor) ; Šlosarčík, Ivo (referee)
This thesis Construction of the Single European Railway Area: Reforms of railway sector in the Czech Republic 2004-2014 deals with the europeanisation of the Czech railway policies through the lens of four subjects - government, regional governments, Czech railway and private railway companies. The work puts the issue of the European railway reform into the perspective of the concept of network industries liberalisation. The Czech Republic joined the European Union in 2004 and therefore had no chance in influencing its foundation. The thesis attempts to investigate the ways in which the EU affected the Czech railway environment and, simultaneously, if some kind strengthening of actors supporting liberalisation took place. The work concluded that although these actors have been strengthened, the railway market in passenger transport hasn't been created. As the work demonstrates, this was caused mainly by insufficient institutional and adjustment ability of the state that hasn't been able to successfully finish any public tenders. In the regions, the situation is similar - in 2009, a ten- year memorandum on operating of regional transport by Czech railways has been passed. Besides, each region has a different transport policy and the government will probably try to handle.

Marketing communication of the LEO Express rail carrier since 2012
Poloch, Jiří ; Halada, Jan (advisor) ; Klimeš, David (referee)
The bachelor thesis aims to analyze the overall marketing communications of company LEO Express since it entered the market until now. It also deals with other issues necessary for a comprehensive overview and understanding of the context - outlines the issue of competition in the railways in the Czech Republic, which for years have not been possible due to monopoly of the state carrier Czech Railways (České dráhy). It also maps the history of the youngest participant of the battle for customers on the route Prague - Ostrava, presents the main themes of communication and the most important campaigns. The main part then discusses multiple communication channels that the company uses. Each of these is described and critically assessed and compared to the communication of the competitors, RegioJet and Czech Railways. In this way is, for example, analyzed the content and administration of social networks, websites and in-store communication in ticket shops. The last part is devoted to the analysis of data from a survey that I conducted among the passengers on board of the train. This implies, for example, the adoption of the company's communication activities of in the eyes of its customers or particular campaigns awareness.
The effect of the entry of private open-access operators on the performance of railways
Turek, Tomáš ; Vejchodská, Eliška (advisor) ; Louda, Jiří (referee)
This thesis aspires to contribute to the discussion about economic justification of current process of railway liberalisation in European Union and specifically in Czech Republic. We focus on the method of vertical separation and open access, where governments keep control over the infrastructure and its development and individual train operators compete on-track. The first section contains a summary of progress of the reform and its historical context across Europe and a review of various methods of its economic evaluation. Based on that, the next section presents a partial equilibrium econometric model applied on the route between Prague and Ostrava. Simulations are run to explore different market settings, infrastructure investment possibilities and potential tolls imposed on individual road transportation. We conclude that liberalisation followed by entry of competing railway undertakings, as well as a rational attitude of the government towards long-term infrastructure investments, are crucial for future competitiveness of railways.
National mass transportation productivity
Novák, Ivan ; Vokoun, Marek (advisor) ; Štípek, Vladimír (referee)
This thesis is trying to answer some questions regarding national mass transportation in Czech Republic. Its goal is to provide a market analysis and show to what extend is productivity dependent on a form of ownership, which it will subsequently compare between individual means of transportation. The theoretical part focuses on ongoing liberalization of the railway market and tries to find similarities in the already open market of road transportation. Analytical part is using a regression analysis and in connection with theoretical context shows what effects do individual means of transportation have on productivity. Those regression models show decreasing returns of labor. Next the models also show that private ownership is effective and point out that railway transportation doesn't have to be ineffective which some could assume.
