Chvála, Václav ; Kotábová, Věra (advisor) ; Dopieralla, Jakub (referee)
The bachelor's thesis Conditions and factors for the admission of a new state into the Union - comparison of Puerto Rico with Hawaii and Alaska deals with the development of these three territories. Although all three territories gained territory status at the same time, subsequent developments differed. While Hawaii and Alaska were admitted to the Union as the 49th and 50th states in the late 1950s Puerto Rico remains a commonwealth territory to this day. The thesis analyses several areas chosen by the author. In the common section for all three territories, it focuses on the history before joining the US; the demography and culture of the territory; development after gaining the status of the territory until the acquisition of the status of a state or commonwealth. In the case of Puerto Rico the thesis also analyses the development from gaining commonwealth status up to the present. The author searches for the key factors influencing a development of the territory. The identified influences and conditions are subsequently analysed and decided whether necessary for the territory to be accepted into the Union. The Role of the Commonwealth During the Crisis in Zimbabve 2000 - 2003
Giovagnoniová, Lenka ; Rovná, Lenka (advisor) ; Váška, Jan (referee)
This thesis deals with the detailed analysis of Commonwealth instruments and mechanisms during the Zimbabwe crisis between 2000 and December 2003, during which Zimbabwean President Robert Mugabe withdrew his country from the Commonwealth. In 1995 the Commonwealth gained the instruments that are possible to use in the event of a member state violating the Commonwealth principles. Member states declared their adherence by signing the Harare declaration in 1991. At the end of the 90's Zimbabwe started to seize the property of white farmers who supported the newly established opposition. It was strongly opposed by the International Community, especially by the Commonwealth and United Kingdom. The analyzed instruments involve election observation missions during general elections 2000 and presidential elections 2002, the involvement of the Commonwealth Secretary General, also of the Commonwealth Ministerial Action Group, made up of Ministers of Foreign Affairs from eight member countries, the suspension of the member state temporarily and also for undetermined period of time. During the Zimbabwe crisis one other instrument was invented, the troika of states that was deciding about the other steps. However all instruments appeared to be unsuccessful because Zimbabwe lacked the will to cooperate.

Valkoun, Jaroslav ; Kovář, Martin (advisor) ; Skřivan, Aleš (referee) ; Novotný, Lukáš (referee)
This thesis is focused on the analysis of constitutional relations between the mother country and its Dominions. The constitutional problems along with foreign and economic policy formed one of the most significant and interesting chapters in British imperial history. The thesis analysed the formation of the first Dominions, the question of the constitutional position of the Dominions, a gradual change of the then used imperial terminology (the term British Empire vs. the term Commonwealth), and a working of system of Colonial (Imperial) Conferences in connection with the significance of the second influential imperial institution - the Imperial Defence Committee. The thesis deals with establishment of the Imperial War Cabinet, and organising the Imperial War Conference. A constitutional resolution was adopted that once and for all rejected the vision of the federalisation of the Empire and launched post-war discussions on the modification of constitutional relations between individual autonomous countries of the Commonwealth, which culminated during the Imperial Conference of 1921. The circumstances and discussions that accompanied the Chanak Incident, the Lausanne Conference, the British- Japanese alliance, the Imperial Conference of 1923, the Geneva Protocol and the Locarno Pact, all were...

Růžičková, Jana ; Váška, Jan (advisor) ; Rovná, Lenka (referee)
Bachelor thesis "The Image of the Commonwealth in the United Kingdom, 1991- 2011" deals with the international organization Commonwealth of Nations, which evolved from the former British Empire after the Second World War and one of the main objectives of this thesis is to reconstruct the image of the Commonwealth in the contemporary United Kingdom. The UK played a pivotal role within the time of the formation of the Commonwealth, but during the sixties the British approach towards the Commonwealth had changed and Britain quietly started to turn away from the organisation. The timeframe of this paper is defined from 1991, the year of publication of the Harare Declaration, to present. By analysing documents and other mainly primary sources in the first section of this paper, the image of the Commonwealth is reconstructed from perspective of three elements of the British society, namely political scene, media and public. Consequently the crucial question whether the image of the Commonwealth corresponds with the reality is answered and areas where the image and the reality do not correspond are emphasised. The reality of the Commonwealth is derived from its official documents and special literature. Besides the reconstruction of the image the paper also deals with other more general topics such as the...
