Duricka, Tatjana ; Hrdlička, Milan (advisor) ; Ivanovová, Darina (referee)
This dissertation is dedicated to the Ukraine writter Oksana Zabuzhko. At the beginning I'm describing literary-historical and biografical circumstances which led to the birth of her creation. Then I'm focusing on the charasteristic of her prosaic work and her style of writing including the very detailed analysis of her collections of stories named " Sister, sister". This dissertation is as well describing the position of female literature in the present Ukraine literacy process and Oksana Zabuzhko 's part in its development. Second part of my dissertation is focused on the analysis of the translated story called "Girls", from the collection of stories "Sister, sister". Evalution criterions are in this case the questions of equivalence - adequacy of the translation, translation of (un)translatable lexical units in Czech, the problems with translations of facts, translation of foreign languages' parts in original text and reproduction Olga Zabuzkova's style in all levels - syntactic, lexical and expressive as well. Minor mistakes in the translation to the Czech version were revealed during the research, but overall the translation is rated as a very successful one. The translator succeed in transfering of artistic values and pragmatic effect of the original work into Czech language.
Political voice of Aphra Behn
Hoblová, Kristýna ; Nováková, Soňa (advisor) ; Clark, Colin Steele (referee)
The Political Voice of Aphra Behn Kristýna Hoblová, 2013 Abstract This work of literary history analyses the relationship between the fiction of Aphra Behn and the developing partisan politics of the Restoration period, focusing on Behn's use of set tropes of political rhetoric of both Whig and Tory supporters and on the influence of her feminist views on her political writing. It rests on the assumption that in the Restoration period the public and private spheres were still closely interlinked and thus almost any kind of literature engaged in politics, ranging from formal treatises to drama and amatory fiction. The thesis opens with a chapter setting up the historical background and the literary context of the reign of Charles II and James II, which offers a brief overview of the main rhetorical strategies of all kinds of political writing - the household analogy of formal treatises, the Cavalier libertine culture of the Restoration comedy, the relationship between romance and allegory, Tory feminism developed by Margaret Cavendish and methods of political rhetoric employed by John Dryden, the author closest to Behn in political and religious adherence. The third chapter uses this context to sum up Behn's approach to politics in the whole of her work, employing some of her pindarics to prove her...
Feminism in the Poetry of Adrienne Rich: A Comparison of Her Early and Late Poems
Cimalová, Natalie ; Veselá, Pavla (advisor) ; Quinn, Justin (referee)
This BA thesis examines the development of feminism in the poetry of Adrienne Rich between the 1950s and the 1990s. Feminism in Rich's poetry took years to develop from strict formalism in the 1950s that only alluded to the unequal status of women in patriarchal society, to bold free verse and feminist attitudes in the 1970s, and finally to an engagement with marginalization of certain groups of people due to their race, nationality, class or religion. Rich examined the marginalization of women in society already in her first collection, A Change of World (1951), through poems such as "Aunt Jennifer's Tigers" or "An Unsaid Word," which are characterized by the perfection of form. Formalism was still a prominent hallmark of the poems in Rich's second collection, The Diamond Cutters, and Other Poems (1955), but a certain loosening of Rich's style, deviations from the tight stanzaic structure and a bolder approach to criticizing male authority over women can be seen in these poems. This concerns for example poems "Living in Sin" and "Perennial Answer," which address traditionally assigned gender roles. Between the 1950s and the 1970s, there was a major change in Rich's poetry, because it became significantly radical both in terms of feminism and free-verse. This significant shift is most prominent in...

A Comparison of Short Stories by Katherine Mansfield and Elizabeth Bowen
Synková, Blanka ; Wallace, Clare (advisor) ; Nováková, Soňa (referee)
This thesis compares short stories by the New Zealand-born author Katherine Mansfield (1888-1923) and the Anglo-Irish writer Elizabeth Bowen (1899-1973), namely Mansfield's short story collection Bliss and Other Stories (1920) and Bowen's The Demon Lover and Other Stories (1945). It aims to offer a relatively complex view: it discusses the form as well as the content of the short stories, illustrating the arguments with concrete examples from the short stories, famous ones as well as less known; it suggests various influences that may reflect in the short stories, it offers opinions of notable critics on the individual authors and it also occasionally mentions the authors' own opinions on their work and literature in general. There are three chapters in the body of the thesis. One of them provides contextual information about the possible influences that may have shaped the authors' writing as well as about some critical approaches to their work. The other two chapters analyse the form and content of the stories, respectively. The discussion of formal aspects of Mansfield's and Bowen's short stories focuses on various features of the short stories that may be described as impressionist or lyrical, and on technical devices that may be compared to film. The analysis of content is concerned especially...
