Development of cosmetic advertising in lifestyle magazines from the perspective of diversity

The concept of diversity has been a topic of discussion for several years, especially in connection with beauty. More brands are trying to show the widest and most diverse people in their communication and advertising who could identify with their philosophy. Not only the visual side of media content changes, but also verbal communication, which is aimed at the widest possible audience. The aim of the thesis is to find out how diverse advertising content associated with beauty appears in traditional print media, specifically in the lifestyle magazines Harper's Bazaar and Žena a život. Based on multimodal analysis, this qualitative research offers an insight into the development of diversity in cosmetic advertising between years 1994 and 2019. The first part of the diploma thesis is dedicated to theoretical basis of social and media construction of reality, beauty representation in the media and diversity issues. The next part focuses on the interpretation of the methodology of research, followed by the presentation of results of the conducted analysis and their summary. The use and function of persuasive language techniques in women's magazines

This thesis deals with persuasion and its means in the field of contemporary journalistic texts - women's magazines. By employing the approaches of critical analysis of discourse, it analyses selected verbal means, used for persuasive writing. Women's magazine "Žena a život" volumes 2010/13 are used as a case study example. The first theoretical part of this thesis deals with persuasion in terms of psychological communication of sociological and media studies. An analysis follows of women's magazines market in the Czech Republic and the specifics of women's and lifestyle magazines. In the practical part, by using 48 different samples of "žena a život" magazines editorials, women's magazines language is analysed. The thesis focuses on selected verbal means of persuasion and it analyses their usage and function in the text. The diploma thesis Development of topics in selected Czech women's and lifestyle magazines in the years 1918-2018 brings a unique research of a century-old development of selected contents from magazines for women. The introductory chapter states the theoretical framework of media research and its effects and explains the methodology of the research. As its basic platform, it uses the history of the republic, which at first divides into several separate stages bounded by the so-called "eight years" (1918, 1938, 1948, 1968, 1988-89, 2008 and 2018), in which it introduces selected key events of these years. The individual historical parts are followed by a presentation of the influences of these historical milestones on the work and function of the media and the development of emancipation and everyday life of women. It concludes each historical chapter with an analysis of the structure of topics published in the magazines Ženský svět (Women's World) from 1908-1928, Eva (Catholic review) from 1918, Eva (magazine of modern or educated women) from 1928 and 1938, Hvězda československých paní a dívek (Star of Czechoslovak ladies and girls) from 1928 and 1938, Vlasta from 1948 to 2018 and Žena a život (Woman and Life) from 1998-2018. The master thesis The media construction of feminity according to women's lifestyle magazines in years 2006 and 2016 is concerned with values, that women's lifestyle magazines present to women. These values concern with topics such relationships, sexuality, face, health and succees in career. The thesis will examine, in which roles women appear in these magazines. The aim of the thesis is to present a picture of an ideal woman, as the women's lifestyle magazines construct it. The theoretical part is devided into five chapters. The first chapter is focused on historical development of magazine publishing in Czech Republic since 1989. The second chapter describes development of trends in the media content in the last decade. The third part deals with the media and lifestyle magazines ownership. The fourth part introduces a general content of women's lifestyle magazines.
