Balej, Petr ; KUBÍČEK, Jiří (advisor) ; ULVER, Stanislav (referee)
Summary: The subject of this thesis is an analysis of literary and theatrical inspiration (E. A. Poe, D. A. F. Sade, Ch. D. Grabbe, L. Carrol, V. de l?Isle-Adam, H. Walpole, J. W. Goethe, Ch. Marlowe, Baroque and popular plays, Gothic fiction, fairy tales) in Jan Švankmajer?s short (The Last Trick, Punch and Judy, Don Juan, Jabberwocky, Castle of Otranto, The Fall of the House of Usher, The Pendulum, the Pit and Hope) and full-feature (Alice, Faust, Little Otik, Lunacy). The goal of the thesis is to investigate how these sources of inspiration are handled in the final films, how the original topics are translated to other media and how their meaning is developed or reshaped. As regards theatrical inspiration, the thesis describes the transfer of formal means of expression typical for theatre (black light theatre, masked actors, hand puppet theatre, etc.) into film as well as the author?s relationship to puppets and the crucial impact of this relationship on his work.
Lesson Švankmajer
Kim, Eun Sue ; Ulver, Stanislav (advisor) ; Kubíček, Jiří (referee)
Jan Svankmajer has been repeatedly derived images of people who repress freedom of individuals and the oppressed people from several literary works and writings in his films. In this regard, 'Lunacy' is one of the representative works. This paper analyzes his perspective on freedom focusing on his film 'Lunacy' which crammed with motifs and symbols of freedom and repression, insanity and punishment. Perhaps people of our current era may find something in common with the oppressed characters in the old novels. It is a search for the answer of the abstract question, 'What is freedom?' borrowing and sharing an individual, Jan Svankmajer's vision.
Cinematographers of czech documentary film
Šuster, Jan ; Jícha, Marek (advisor) ; Ulver, Stanislav (referee)
In my dissertation I focus on the professional, as well as on the personal, points of view of various documentary cinematographers and on the complexity of the image conveyed in the works of audiovisual documentaries. Through the eyes of four generations of directors of photography, I seek to compose a holistic view of the Czech cinematography. In the introduction the history of Czech documentary films is briefly outlined. The following chapter is composed of personal interviews with the four cinematographers. These professionals were chosen according to their experience with documentary films and their contribution to the Czech cinematography in general. Each one of these four professionals has a notable character which has, among their distinguished camera work, left an enduring mark on the quality of cinematographic image. The questions directed to them are the same, thus aiming to point out a multi-generation view on the issue of camera work in Czech documentary films, as well as on the characters of the cinematographers themselves. To conclude my dissertation I compare and contrast various attitudes toward the camera work in documentary films. By introducing my personal opinion and confronting with the ideas presented by these four generations of professionals, I aim to express the point of views of the new, fifth, generation of cinematographers.

Heroes in the colors of Zhang Yimou
Bernardová, Helena ; Dufek, Jiří (advisor) ; Ulver, Stanislav (referee)
Heroes in the colors of Zhang Yimou is mostly about three movies from famous director Zhang Yimou. Hero, House of Flying Daggers and Curse of the Golden Flower are epic movies which combine martial arts with drama and philosophy. Stories are amplified and influenced by color stylization. In Hero colors support construction of the movie. Silver and gold are figting against each other in Curse of the Golden Flower and House of the Flying daggers is shot in colors of nature. My work also looks into symbols of those colors and tries to find out whether those symbols are understandable for European as well as for Chinese audience and how European audience can profit from Zhang Yimou´s interpretation of the world.
The Silence after Mankind
Bittnerová, Magdaléna ; Klimeš, Ivan (advisor) ; Ulver, Stanislav (referee)
Vladimír Körner is one of the prominent Czech screenwriters and his contributions to the Czech cinema are considered equivalent to any distinguished director. According to his own words he is dealing with only one subject matter ? he creates an apocalyptic vision of a world without mercy and love. This analysis of his body of work and its singular structural elements broadens the discourse from which it is possible to look at his creative output. Körner?s influences can be found in modernist literary traditions, proto-novel structures and the philosophical tradition of existentialism. The analysis pursues his use of leitmotivs and recurrent themes that are the main vehicles of Körner?s artistic message. The pros and cons of his auctorial method are demonstrated through the analysis of the construction of the diegetic world and the characters, both continuously made of identical sems. The analysis points as well at him being one of the first authors who brought the theme of the shattered communal life and coexistence of Czechs and Germans. First and foremost it however tries to shed light on the evolution of his work from outstanding psychological dramas and historical allegories such as Adelheid, Údolí Včel (Valley of the Bees) and the novel Písečná kosa (Sandy Beach) in the sixties and fifties to midcult creations from the nineties and the beginning of the 21st century such as Krev zmizelého (Shadows of the Deceased). It relies on the neoformalist analysis of the sources that are his scripts, novels and novellas. In three case studies we as well examine the relationship between Körner and another creative contributor ? the director.
