Brožek, Kamil ; Tumis, Stanislav (advisor) ; Horčička, Václav (referee)
The thesis is a summary of what I studied about Korean War, the 20th century's first war led by the United Nations against an aggressor country and at the same time one of the most important milestones of the Cold War. The objective of this thesis is to provide an integrated overview of all the events and circumstances that led to Korea's partition and to civil war rather than to bring forward new findings. The first chapter describes the circumstances in Korea after the end of the World War II and the engagement given to Korea by the Allies in connection of the expected defeat of Japan. The second chapter focuses on different development of political situation in the north and south of Korean Peninsula. The third part provides an analysis of the situation in connection with international politics and the groundwork for a permanent division of the peninsula. The fourth chapter contains description of birth of two independent Korean countries, the fifth focuses on the years 1948-1950, when the tension between two hostile Korean regimes gradually escalated. In the sixth chapter I concentrate on the beginning of the civil war. At the end of the thesis I provide a summary of all important factors which predetermined the breakout of the conflict. Czechoslovak Aid to Israel in 1948
Votavová, Šárka ; Tumis, Stanislav (advisor) ; Soukup, Jaromír (referee)
The present work deals with the circumstances and course of the Czechoslovak aid to Israel at the end of the forties of the 20th century. For purposes of this main objective is divided into two parts, the first of which presents a general overview of historical events associated with the formation of the Israeli state on the territory of Palestine, from the period World War I until the mid-20th century. Among other things, pointed to the proportion of major powers, especially Great Britain and France, the development of national sentiments and relations between Arabs and Jews in the Middle East. Expectations of the Arabs are not always coincide with the political intentions of the British and the French, especially as regards the Palestinian territories. When the 29th November 1947 the UN voted for the creation of Israel, the Arabs saw it as a betrayal and violation of earlier promises to give them power. The conflict, which is then unleashed in the Middle East, decided on the existence or nonexistence of the newly established Jewish state. The center of work is the second chapter on its own during the Czechoslovak aid to Israel. There is presented an analysis of the political relationship of both these states, especially with regard to the role of the Czechoslovak leaders to decide on establishment of an...
Arab Revolt in Palestine (1936-1939). A Contribution to the History of the Jewish-Arab Conflict in the Middle East.
Zamrazilová, Barbora ; Tumis, Stanislav (advisor) ; Valkoun, Jaroslav (referee)
This contribution focuses on the Arab revolt in Palestine in the years 1936-1939. This uprising was a breakpoint in the Arab-Jewish coexistence and its consequences affected the rest of the British Mandate period. This contribution shows how the Yishuv's attitudes changed towards Arabs, while Arabs attacked Jewish settlements and inhabitants and sabotaging the economy. Revolt was a result of a persisting long-term Arab frustration which arose from fear of Jewish domination and desire for sovereignty. Some parts also refer to British reactions and searching for solution of the crisis. Policy of Great Britain as a mandatory power depended on many aspects of current situation in the Middle East and in Europe. The neighbouring Arab lands, which either reached their independence in the past, or struggled for it, did not have a common and stable opinion in the question of uprising. Their response was important for Britain to solve the problem. The first chapter concentrates on long-term and short-term reasons for the revolt. It describes the differences between both communities and changes on Arab political scene. The second part is focused on the beginnings of the uprising which was connected with six-month general strike. This chapter is oriented on describing the atmosphere of the strike. It sums up...
Maginot line and its construction in political and military context
Formánek, Ivo ; Horčička, Václav (advisor) ; Tumis, Stanislav (referee)
Maginot line is one of the essential issues of military history between two world wars. This graduation thesis situates this phenomenon in wider political and military context. The period of interest is between the First and the Second world war, but for explanation of full coherence, sometimes it was necessary abandon this frame. The main object of interest is not the history of Maginot line itself, but everything that shaped the points of view of generals and politicians about its construction. The answered questions are, why did they start to build this bulwark, what were they waiting for and what advantages and disadvantages they assigned to this line. The negativ opinions of political left were also analysed, just as the french interwar fortification school. There is an attention on reflections of Maginot line in civil and military periodicals that together with analysis of opinions of important political and civil persons enabled to answer the question, whether it is possible to speak about myth of Maginot line. This graduation thesis shows clearly that it is very difficult to think so, because construction of Maginot line didn not influence the life in France so much and it wasn not the cause of fallacious imaginations either.
On the Social Position of the Jewish Minority in Germany, 1871-1890
Plíčková, Helena ; Stellner, František (advisor) ; Tumis, Stanislav (referee)
The thesis deals with the social position of the Jewish minority in Germany during the first decades of the Second Reich; it is intended as a contribution to the social history with an emphasis on the history of everyday life. It attemps to answer a question, why despite (what seemed to be) a highly successful assimilation, or more precisely acculturation, the Jews became a target of hateful attacks again in the late 1870's and 1880's. Various methods have been applied to determine, firstly, how the German-Jewish family life looked, whether and how its education approach and job structure differed from those of the majority; secondly, in which way the social-economic situation affected the minority position, its participation in public life and its attitude to the recently estabilished state; and last but not least, the way the German-Jews understood and perceived themselves, as well as the East European immigrants (so called Ostjuden) and the public's anti-Semitism. The result of the study shows that the German-Jewish values and customs were mainly identical to those of the bourgeoisie, probably with an endogamy being the only specific feature. At the time of rising Conservatism and in spite of experiencing bitter disappointment at the again appearing anti-Semitism, their optimism and trust in...

Clement of Rome: his personality, work and place in the christian tradition
Török, Dan ; Suchánek, Drahomír (advisor) ; Tumis, Stanislav (referee)
In my work I deal with the personality of Clement of Rome and with the importance of his work. Firstly, I express my opinion about the date of Clement's activity, so I am able to put Clement into the historical context of early Christianity. Then, on the basis of both survey of the previous research and my own analysis I am trying to solve the question, who Clement was - with main interest in the question of his origin. The work also aims on classifying Clement's place in the development of Christian tradition. Thus I deal with the question of Clement's relationship to apostole Paul and his teaching and the problem of Clement's work and activity as the most important member of third generation of Christians. In the end, I am using the results to create a draft of the situation of Christianity in Clement's era and to propose questions suitable for future research.
