Simbartlová, Anna ; Tomalová, Eliška (advisor) ; Perottino, Michel (referee)
The bachelor thesis "Alliance Française and Institut Français: Cooperation or Competition? (The Case of the Czech Republic)" deals with the Czech model of activities provided by the French cultural institutions abroad and the potential complementarity or rivalry of theirs. The first chapter briefly introduces the general cultural diplomacy and afterwards deals with the French model of this policy. Among the specific elements of the French cultural diplomacy belongs the wide net of cultural centres which is created by two types of institutions namely Instituts français, organised by the French government, and Alliances françaises associations which are governmentally independent. The thesis is further specialised on the case of the Czech Republic where there simultaneously exist both of above mentioned types of cultural institutions. The second chapter describes mainly their functioning and activities, and the third chapter subsequently analyses their reciprocal relationship. The aim of this thesis is to research whether this relationship is complementary or conflicting. The thesis comes to the conclusion that in spite of certain collisions of interests between Institut français and Alliances françaises in the Czech model, the close cooperation which is in motion between them and which constitutes...
The Impact of the Israeli - Palestinian conflict on the Union for the Mediterranean (2008-2011)
Stuchlíková, Zuzana ; Weiss, Tomáš (advisor) ; Tomalová, Eliška (referee)
This thesis aims to analyze why and how did the Israeli-Palestinian conflict influence the Union for the Mediterranean in the first three years of its existence. The new organization was meant to provide a fresh impulse to the Euro-Mediterranean partnership, by focusing on pragmatic co-operation and newly introducing a concept of co-ownership and institutionalization. However, the initial thought of achieving the pragmatic cooperation through greater political engagement and visibility soon proved fatally wrong, with the Gaza war and its aftermaths. The first part briefly describes a history of EU policies towards Mediterranean, Barcelona Process and European Neighbourhood Policy. It also presents the attitude of all main actors - European states, Arab states and Israel - to the idea of regional cooperation in the Mediterranean. Second part introduces the Union for the Mediterranean and points out weak points of its structure, using the analysis of founding declarations from Paris and Marseille. The last, third chapter, uses the chronology of Israeli-Palestinian conflict to analyze its effects on the UfM structure. General conclusion of this thesis is that the structure, as agreed in 2008, was not able to deal with growing tensions between member states. On the contrary, it created a platform for...

"Special relationship" between Quebec and France in the 1950s and 1960s
Onderková, Kristýna ; Fiřtová, Magdalena (advisor) ; Tomalová, Eliška (referee)
Canadian francophone province Quebec is tied to the French Republic not only thanks to their common history and language but also because of a very specific long-term international and political cooperation both within the Francophonie and beyond it. This bachelor thesis "Special relationship" between Quebec and France in 1950s and 1960s tries to prove that there really existed a "special relationship" between France and Quebec in the 1950s and 1960s which is in many ways similar to the "special relationship" between the United States of America and the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland. The period is specific due to the coincidence of two important events: the victory of Jean Lesage's Liberals that started the Quiet Revolution in Quebec on one hand and the French presidency of General Charles de Gaulle, the biggest defender of good relations between France and Quebec on the other hand. Based on careful research of their political, diplomatic, cultural and economic relations during this special period, the thesis analyses to what extent the "special relationship" strengthened Quebec's self-confidence, supported the promotion of Quebec's interests within Canada, helped Quebec in its struggle for being recognized by much more countries and directed this province towards fighting...
The role of agriculture in the process of Spain's entry into the EC
Sýkora, Filip ; Perottino, Michel (advisor) ; Tomalová, Eliška (referee)
Spain sent its application for EC membership in 1977, but was admitted only in 1986 after complicated entry negotiations. One of the most disputed topics concerning the Spain's application to the EC was agriculture. This bachelor thesis examines the importance of agricultural sector in the process of integration of Spain in the EC, namely expectations of membership in EC for agricultural sector, the attitude of older EC member countries during negotiations and eventually the changes in Spain's agricultural sector after the entry into the EC. The thesis strives to verify the assumption that a good deal of motivation for the EC membership came from expectations that the entry into the EU would bring intense capital investment and would open new markets for Spanish agricultural produce, meanwhile southern EC's feared high competition of the Spanish agriculture and their consent with further enlargement was contingent on either concessions by Spain in other fields or structural changes in EC's policies. A part of the hypothesis is also the assumption that even though Spain was faced with long transition periods, Spanish agriculture mostly benefitted from the entry into the EC and experienced further modernization. Keywords Agriculture, Common Agricultural Policy, regional policy, EC, EEC, EU, Spain
Changing role of Quebec in French politics
Lemel, Ondřej ; Weiss, Tomáš (advisor) ; Tomalová, Eliška (referee)
This thesis deals with transformations of French foreign policy towards Québec and Canada. The first president of the French Fifth Republic, Charles de Gaulle, as well as all his successors together with their administration supported Québec's international ambitions and its desire to be sovereign abroad in the areas that fall within its competence in internal politics according to the Canadian Constitution. This support took place mainly on the platform of Francophonie. In 1995, the presidential candidate at that time, Jacques Chirac, clearly supported sovereingty movement. After the referendum won by the federalists France started to gradually reconcile with the federal government of Canada in various international politics issues such as protection of cultural diversity and multilateralism. France is also worried that in case of Canada's separation, the English speaking rest of the country would get more easily under the influence of the United States of America. France does not intend to admit this scenario. Jacques Chirac during this twelve-year mandate was gradually deepening the cooperation with Ottawa. Nevertheless, Québec remains the privileged partner of France in the fields of culture and education that are key for French foreign policy. Former French president Nicolas Sarkozy was even clearly...

Tomalová, Eliška Disertace: Kulturní dimenze francouzské zahraniční politiky 1990-2010 Abstract The dissertation thesis "Cultural Dimension of French Foreign Policy: 1990-2010" studies the role of culture in the foreign policy with focus on France. Comparison of Decolonisation in Vietnam and Algeria
Prášková, Dagmar ; Karásek, Tomáš (advisor) ; Tomalová, Eliška (referee)
The Franco-Vietnamese War launched a period of French decolonization and The Algerian War of Independence ended the French colonial empire. Both conflicts shook the French Fourth Republic's foundations. French reasons for struggling in Vietnam were efforts to save national heritage but Algerian territory was considered to be fully part of France with a large minority of French population. In September 1945 the League for the Independence of Vietnam (abbreviated Viet Minh: a communist revolutionary national liberation movement formed by Ho Chi Minh) proclaimed Democratic Republic of Vietnam. War started the following year after several attempts of negotiations while the Vietnamese authorities had refused autonomy within the French Union and the Indochinese Federation offered by France. This colonial war turned into a Cold War crisis in January 1950 because Viet Minh received support from the communist China and the Soviet Union. The war ended in 1954 after a massive French defeat in Dien Bien Phu and it was very significant because it was the first time that a western colonial power was defeated by an indigenous revolutionary force. The Geneva accords, under which France agreed to withdraw from its former Indochinese colonies, partitioned the country in two parts at the 17th Parallel as a temporary measure...
