Measuring Czechoslovaks. Czech Society of Biotypology and Constitutional Medicine in Czechoslovakia 1937-1959
Musil, Jan ; Hermann, Tomáš (advisor) ; Šimůnek, Michal (referee) ; Svobodný, Petr (referee)
This doctoral thesis describes the formation, activities and dissolution of the Czech Society of Biotypology (1937-1959), herein used as an example of impact of the constitutional typology (human typology science) on the Czechoslovak medicine. Human constitution science (in French and Romance languages called biotypology) classifies individual human beings on the base of morphological and physiological characteristics, with particular emphasis on forecast of future trends. The core of the science focuses on correlation between the physical appearance of a person and his/her mental characteristics. The Czech Society of Biotypology (Česká společnost biotypologická - ČSB) was founded with ambitions not only to study human beings, but also to increase their potential. The whole movement was therefore conceived as an example of a sanitation scientific program in accordance with the governmental interest in rationalization of population care. The methodology of the thesis is based on Foucault's concept of biopower - change of power strategies and their constitutive influence on the development and change of social relations, values and individual strategies of persons. The story of formation and dissolution of ČSB is interpreted as a consequence of these changes. The core of the thesis consists of a...

Norwegian Accession Process to the EC/EU Compared with Denmark and Sweden
Trmalová, Eliška ; Svobodný, Petr (advisor) ; Kasáková, Zuzana (referee)
In the second half of the twentieth century Norway repeatedly made efforts to become a member of the European Communities, which were later incorporated into the newly created European Union. Two referendums were held - in 1972 and 1994 and in both of them Norwegian citizens decided that Norway will not become a member of the EC/EU. Outcomes of the referendums were narrow, though. Interesting fact is, that referendums in the neighbor states - Denmark (1972) and Sweden (1994) ended up in favor of the European Communities/ the European Union. Bachelor thesis called "Norwegian Accession Process to the EC/EU Compared with Denmark and Sweden" concentrates on reasons of the different outcome of referendums in Norway compared to Denmark and Sweden. These Scandinavian countries have many similar characteristics, therefore was expected similar outcome. In my opinion there are three main reasons for the different results of the referendums. Firstly, there are Norwegian specifics, such as widely popular fishing and protection of agriculture. Second are economic reasons that are linked to big profits from crude oil and natural gas export. Last reason is strong national pride and fear of losing the decision making in key subjects. In the Norwegian society is still existing trauma connected with history and it is closely...

Vosejpková, Tereza ; Svobodný, Petr (advisor) ; Young, Mitchell (referee)
Due to open immigration policy Sweden is often target destination of non-European immigrants. Because of that Sweden has to force high share number of immigrants in composition of inhabitants and try to make as homogeneous population as possible, which can be noticeably supported by compulsory education. By way of analysis of education system and its documents as well as insight into contemporary situation, this study should help to understand not only the basic ideas of immigrant education, but also consequences, which are brought by dissimilar education of pupils without knowledge of Swedish language, and consider whether all components of that education are of integration or not.
The Greenlandic Journey towards Sovereignty: the Role of the European Union in this Process
Novotný, Dominik ; Váška, Jan (advisor) ; Svobodný, Petr (referee)
This thesis researches the role of the European Union in the Greenlandic journey towards economic self-sufficiency and political sovereignty. The main goal of the thesis is to interpret the position of EU as a foreign partner of Nuuk. The author concentrates on three main areas. The first one is fishery, the sector which is currently of the greatest importance to the country's economy and on the grounds of which Greenland left the structures of the European integration. This area was also fundamental for the shaping of the original form of the EU- Greenlandic relations. The second area is the extraction of Greenlandic natural resources, which in future might be the potential source of Greenlandic economic self-sufficiency; however this will not be possible without foreign investments. The third area is the political framework of sovereignty-seeking efforts within the country, the entire Danish realm and in the global context. This paper is a compilation thesis supplemented by author's interpretations of primary sources. In the thesis the author confirms his hypothesis that the EU even after Greenland left the EEC represents a fundamental aspect for the development of Greenland toward full independence.

"As if a Part of Us Was Left Somewhere There in Sweden." - The Evacuation of Finnish "War Children" to Sweden during the Second World War
Fremrová, Květa ; Švec, Luboš (advisor) ; Svobodný, Petr (referee)
The largest evacuation of children in history took place in Finland during the World War II. Approximately 70,000 children were evacuated to the safety in Sweden (some of them also to Denmark and Norway) during several waves of evacuation that to a large extent followed the on-goings on the front. However, this episode was despite its magnitude until recently one of the forgotten chapters of the Finnish history. This thesis focuses on historical circumstances that led to the final decision to evacuate children, describes how the transports were organized and executed. It also mentions the time that the children spent in Sweden and difficulties with which they had to cope after their return to Finland. Since the 1990's, the "war children" have gained more public attention. In the second part of my thesis, I try to explain how the children experiences found their way to the public awareness, explain the previous lack of interest as well as the sudden wave of attention paid to these children. It seems that this was caused by the combination of political factors and development in the personal lives of the children. During the previous decades, the children had to cope with the denial of their experiences on two levels - by the state and by their own family. During the Cold War, the conflict with the...
