Job satisfaction determinants and their relation to ergonomics in working at a computer
Rychtecký, Antonín ; Riegel, Karel (referee) ; Štikar, Jiří (advisor)
In the present day, computers constitute a pillar as well as an incentive of progressive development in many branches of human activity, or are rapidly advancing into them. The mantocomputer form of interaction is for some people more common and frequent than the mantoman form of interaction, predominant for centuries. On the other hand, the universal use of computers does not prevent the modern man from having to do mechanical, monotonous work at a computer - which when it is not of a creative character can bring with it considerable discomfort, both mental and physical.
Women in ICT professions and ICT sector in the Czech Republic
Kristová, Markéta ; Šiklová, Jiřina (advisor) ; Dudová, Radka (referee) ; Riegel, Karel (referee)
This thesis analyses the low representation of women in the ICT professions as well as their inadequate representation in the ICT companies in the Czech Republic. Given it is the very first study of this kind in the Czech Republic, it also provides comprehensive catalogue of relevant foreign theoretical studies and hypothesis, which examine the issue of gender gap in the ICT. This thesis also deals with social and historical factors that - as approved by numerous empirical studies - have negative impact on the way girls and women relate to information and communication technologies, resulting in a low representation of women in the ICT professions. The above factors are applied to the context of the Czech society, using academic studies and other relevant sources in the field of equal opportunities, including qualitative interviews, which I conducted with ICT teachers and lecturers as well as women and men working in the ICT field. Not last, the thesis builds upon a qualitative empirical probe, which aims to introduce more detailed information about the experiences of women holding ICT positions in the Czech Republic. This particular research failed to prove the presumption that the work environment in the ICT companies in the Czech Republic is not sufficiently friendly or obliging towards women. Moreover,...
Making "exit" decisions: monitoring and adapting intuitive judgement processes involved
Bakošová, Nina ; Wagnerová, Irena (referee) ; Riegel, Karel (advisor)
The purpose of this thesis is to examine exit decision-making (e.g. decision to cease a venture, project or any other kind of activity, which required previous monetary, time or other investment) as well as to explore possible enhancements of exit decision-making not only in business context but also in personal decisions. Two theoretical approaches were applied: Prospect theory by Kahneman and Tversky and Intuitive judgment approach. Implications stemming from these theoretical models were employed and two phenomena characteristic of exit decision-making specified. Namely, it was (reverse) sunk cost fallacy and resulting (de-)escalation of commitment, which were also explored empirically. Research consisted of two parts. First developed a new research scenario aiming at personal exit decision-making. Second explored the reaction to four levels of sunk costs (monetary or time expenses). As Phase B of Pilot study showed, new scenario proved managed to elicit reverse sunk costs effect. Further changes were made to the scenario for the purposes of Main study, which resulted in equivocal findings. Monetary sunk costs did not elicit any expected effect, time sunk costs induced an incoherent reverse sunk cost effect and respective de-escalation of commitment. Author believes these results revealed that important...
Work and the meaning of life
Korbelová, Pavla ; Rymeš, Milan (referee) ; Riegel, Karel (advisor)
The thesis on the topic work and the meaning of life is focused on two important areas of psychology, one of which belongs to general psychology and the other one to work and organizational psychology. Although both areas might seem to be very different, this thesis shows their mutual relationship and deals with ways they can influence each other. Work can be a significant source of meaning in life thanks to the fact that it provides the possibility to satisfy not only the lowest but also the highest human needs in the current world. Except of the above mentioned relation between work and the meaning of life the thesis points out many aspects that these two areas, the meaning of life and work, have in common. It also highlights the similarity of consequences caused by their absence. The theoretical part includes three chapters. The first one deals with the meaning of life, its significance for individual's life and its separate aspects. The switch to the issue of work is made in the sub-section about work as a possible source of meaning in life. The second chapter refers to components of the relationship of personality and work and connects them to the meaning of life and the meaning of work itself. The third chapter is focused on meaningfulness of work and items that influence meaningful work. Results of...
Psychological aspects of gender at work and in management
