Commented translantion of an audiovisual track from Dutch to Czech

(english) The aim of this bachelor thesis is the translating and subtitling of a short Dutch documentary film for youth. Concretely it was the 97th part of the program BioBits. This film is about genes and their role in evolution. The translation was done from Dutch to Czech. The author had to transcribe the spoken Dutch text and analyze it. He has used the analytical methods of Christiane Nord for this purpose. The choice of the translational strategies and the solving of concrete translational problems are patterned on the preceding analysis of the text. The author relied mainly on the strategies of Andrew Chesterman and Jiří Levý. The typology of the translational problems and their solutions are demonstrated on the concrete examples from the text. The translated text was condensed by the author in order to make the subtitles. He outlined the procedure of condensing by way of the concrete examples relying on the work of Miroslav Pošta. That was necessary to overcome the differences between the spoken and written language and the limitation of space and time which are so typical for subtitling. The Image of Dutch Culture in Selected Czech Media

This bachelor thesis examines how much selected Czech media have focused on Dutch culture in the period 1.9.2007-1.9.2012. The theoretical part describes the chosen method for realization of the research, defines both the main and the subsidiary experimental question and specifies the hypothesis. Furthermore it introduces selected Czech printed media and defines the terms culture and Dutch culture for use of this bachelor thesis. The theoretical part also offers an overview of the Dutch culture presented in certain publications which are avaiable in the Czech Republic. The practical part contains graphs demonstrating the results of the research and answers the experimental questions. These are summed up in the conclusion of this thesis where you can also find the comparison between the media research results and the image of the Dutch culture presented in the publications mentioned in the theoretical part. The aim of this bachelor thesis is to explore how Dutch culture is presented in the Czech media and figure out which cultural issues are the most favoured.

Semantic and stylistic shifts in second-hand translations (based on examples of Dutch books translated into Czech via German translations)

(in English): This Thesis deals with the phenomenon of indirect translation. Since indirect translation is still relatively common in the Czech culture, but at the same time rather understudied, the aim of this Thesis is to describe the phenomenon in more detail and with the help of an actual text analysis to investigate the influence this method has on the final translation. Two texts were chosen for the analysis, both written by the Dutch historian Johan Huizinga, being a characteristic sample of the bibliography of Czech indirect translations of Dutch written works. Compiling this bibliography was one of the tasks of this Thesis. It documents the extent to which indirect translation was used in past and present, and it also shows what kind of texts are most likely to be translated indirectly. Finally, the chosen texts were reduced (using sample method) to fragments that were then analysed in terms of stylistic and semantic shifts. According to the analysis the most common shifts appeared to the stylistic ones, mostly those that result in weakening the original style of the author in favour of the translator's own style. What the semantic shifts concerns, in comparison with the mediating translation they seem to occur twice as often in the mediated translation.

Problems in translation of Dutch horticultural terminology

In this diploma thesis I concerned myself with translations of Dutch horticultural texts into Czech language, both professional and popular-science texts, as wel as legislative and pragmatic. The aim of my thesis was to analyse different kinds of horticultural texts from translatological point of view and to find out some problematic phenomena, which arise by the reception and translation of these texts. I concentrated also on relations of equivalence between Dutch, Latin and Czech terminology by the names of plants, writing of the scientific names and evaluation of selected texts in terms of text linguistics. First chapter is devoted to teoretical parts of linguistics and translatology related to this problematic and it is mainly based on research of literary sources. Further I concerned myself with some translatological problems, which a translator meets in the area of professional and popular-science literature. First of them was the problem of nomanclatural names, individual botanical categories and rules for writing of the names of plants. Dutch Professional Language Usage and Problems of Translation into Czech Abstract This thesis analyzes the Dutch technical language with a focus on the legal language. The first part is devoted to general problems of translation and translation of the technical language, including theoretical elaboration on terminology and equivalence. After that the thesis deals with specific problems of the translation of the legal language. Next part of the thesis is devoted to a linguistic analysis of the Dutch legal language. It is followed by an analysis of the equivalence of Dutch and Czech legal terms along with solutions of the translation of zero equivalence. The final part deals with practical translation of the Dutch legal texts into the Czech. The aim of the work is an example of practical application of theoretical knowledge on the translation of legal language.

Thinking about literary translation in the Netherlands and in Flanders in the second half of the 20th century

The Dutch speaking area has always been a rich source of texts about literary translation and the academic translation research in the Netherlands and in Flanders is world-famous. Since the half of the 20th century, the study of literary translation underwent a crucial development. This descriptive work depicts the state and the development of thinking about literary translation in the Netherlands and in Flanders in the second half of the 20th century. Attention is paid to various aspects of literary translation: Academic research of literary translation, translation scholars, their theories and works; institutions where literary translation is/was studied and taught and the didactics of literary translation; an overview of translation organizations, associations, prizes and funds supporting literary translation and translators; different attitudes of academic translation schol ars and non-academic writers of essays about literary translation; the situation of literary translators on the Dutch and Flemish market.

Application of text-optimizing techniques and their influence on adequate text comprehension

This dissertation describes a research aimed at finding text-optimization techniques which would increase the comprehension and better the attitudes of the readers towards the text. The aim is to evaluate the effectiveness of these techniques considering the possibility of implementation into the text-production process of state and commercial institutions. The theoretical basis for text comprehension is the construction of mental representations of the text. Many factors, internal and external, can influence the construction of a correct mental representation of the text. This thesis researches the factors of text quality and attitudes towards the text. Effects of the same text manipulations of Slovak and Dutch texts were observed in three language groups. These were: a group of Slovak native speakers, Dutch native speakers and people who learned Dutch as a foreign language. For this research two texts were selected, namely the instructions provided with the tax declaration form and an instruction manual provided with a digital camera.
