Creation and invention of national political culture in Bohemia 1848-1868 -Mediation between social and cultural history- (Résumé) Taku Shinohara This thesis analyzes problems of building of Czech national society on the countryside in the time from the revolution of 1848 up to the consolidation of dual monarchy in 1868. We can distinguish building process of Czech society after the abolition of servitude in 1848 into three periods: a period from 1848/49 to 1870s, a period from 1870s to the turn of the centuries, and a period from the turn of the centuries to the age of the "total wars". The first period this thesis deals with can be characterized by fundamental transformations of peasants' society after the abolition of servitude and the gradual penetration of norms and life-styles of civil society. It was rather a loose network of the local honorables, such as a network of voluntary associations and communal autonomous bodies than a solid organization of any political party that enabled the mass mobilization of national movements. This thesis emphasizes that political mobilizations of national parties (national pilgrimages, national festivities a other various manifestations) were not realized by any political purposes nor by any more or less concrete social interests in a narrow sense of the word, but by...

At the same time, it examines reciprocity of the cultural relationship. In the centre of attention stands the American Institute in Prague, founded in 1931, and an analysis of all aspects of his activities. The author employed a historical method using primary source documents, chiefly records of the American Institute archived in the National Archives of the Czech Republic. The supplementary literature was utilized mainly to set the American Institute into the context of its time and to define the basic concepts - culture, cultural relationships and propaganda. The analysis of Institute's functions showed that, in comparison of the other Anglo-American clubs in Czechoslovakia, Institute's activity covered much wider spectrum of cultural exchange. Political aspects of the war of 1812
Škývara, Josef ; Stracený, Josef (advisor) ; Pokorný, Jiří (referee)
The war in 1812 is sometimes referred to as the Second War of Independence. This war was overshadowed by the Napoleonic Wars. The war was caused as a result of restrictions of the American trades. Another cause of this conflict was the tension on the border between Canada and the United States. The Americans accused the British to support the Indians in their attacks on US settlements. If the United States could bear the partial trade restrictions until the end of the Napoleonic wars, the war would never have occurred. The war lasted three years and had no winners or losers. Keywords War, independence, trade, Indians, winner, loser
