Communication in a multilingual family

The subject of this master thesis is about multilingualism in one particular family which uses Czech, Spanish and Swedish in everyday situations. The beginning of this thesis deals with the theory of bilingualism, language acquisition in bilingual speakers and presents the concept of communication and language management. The theoretical part is based on related literature, which tries to give an overview of multilingualism and offers the theoretical background for the research. The research explores the communication of the chosen bilingual family who lives in Sweden. Information was obtained using two methods, semi-structured interviews with each family member and the conversation analysis of two family dinners, which includes communication of all family members. The research shows how members approach bilingualism and their individual languages and provides the opportunity to explore the family language management. Adaptation of selected literary texts for A2 level students

The thesis will focus on the adaptation of texts to the A2 level for students learning Czech as a foreign or second language. The adaptation will concern artistic texts drawn from modern Czech literature. In the theoretical part of the thesis, we will focus on the theory of simplifying artistic texts and the use of adapted texts in the teaching of a foreign (second) language as part of language lessons and reading comprehension practice. We will also assess the challenges of using adapted texts, define the concept of reading skills we will define the concept of reading competence and methods for its development. The theoretical section will include a chapter addressing the significance of literature in the foreign languages' lessons. The practical part of the thesis will contain the selection of texts from modern Czech literature, their adaptation to the A2 level (according to the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages), and the development of worksheets for students with methodological instructions for teachers. Gender in Czech Language Textbooks

(in English): The thesis will focus on whether (or how) Czech language textbooks for apprentices have been gender-balanced in the last 50 years in terms of the representation and representation of men and women, or boys and girls. The core of the thesis will be the analysis of three Czech textbooks for apprentices with different periods of their creation: textbook A. Tejnor et al. textbook written before 1990, O. Hasenblas et al. textbook written in 1993 and N. Kvítková et al. textbook written after 2000. The analysis will look at how men and women/boys and girls are represented in the textbooks (in the texts and exercises used) and how they are represented in the textbooks. A comparison of the results of the analysis of different textbooks could show whether there has been a shift in this respect over the last 50 years and, if so, what kind of shift.
Motivation to Learn a Foreign Language in Post-Secondary School Courses

Tato bakalářská práce si klade za cíl představit pojem motivace v rámci aplikované lingvistiky a představit výzkumu motivace na poli aplikované lingvistiky, zejména pak v případě učení se cizímu jazyku. Praktickým cílem je popsat zdroje motivace ke studiu cizího jazyka mezi studenty pomaturitního studia v pražské soukromé jazykové škole, kteří studují anglický, německý, španělský nebo japonský jazyk, porovnat případné rozdíly mezi zdroji motivace v závislosti na studovaném jazyku, a dále zjistit, jakou motivační roli hraje mezi těmito studenty ideální mnohojazyčné já. Analysis of a Thai Speaker's Speech in Czech (case study)

This case study will present an analysis of a Thai speaker's speech in Czech. The Thai speaker's level of Czech during data collection was A2. Data from two other respondents with levels B1 and B2 will also be used as a comparison. The main aim is to analyse the Czech speech of a Thai speaker in order to determine the origin of language errors and classify them into different aspects of language: phonetic, lexicological, morphologic, syntactic and grammatical. The practical aim is to create didactic recommendations based on the completed analysis for teaching Czech to speakers with Thai as their mother tongue. The data was collected in written and spoken form. In a theoretical section, it will introduce information about the Thai community in the Czech Republic, as well as distinctive features of the Thai language, including its typological differences from Czech. In the practical section, there will be analysis of Czech speech at A2 level. In the end, there is a summary of the most common problematic phenomena in the speech of a Thai speaker, together with a more positive evaluation, and a summary of the most fundamental problems for the Thai minority living in the Czech Republic.
Situation of a Pupil with Different First Language at Czech Primary School (Case Study)

This diploma thesis aims to illustrate the situation of a pupil with a different first language in a Czech primary school through a case study. The first part of the thesis is focused on the general theoretical context. The terminology is defined; then, the theoretical knowledge concerning the integration of pupils with DFL in the school class is described, pedagogical tools and intercultural communication. Subsequently, concepts like Czech as a second language for children and bilingualism are described. The analysis is based on three sources of data - interviews with the pupil's mother and her teacher, pupil's language exercises and the tutor's diary, which was kept as part of tutoring. At the end of the research, all research questions concerning the pupil, her integration into the Czech primary school, her language competence and family background were answered. It was found that the analysed subject is a pupil with DFL who is also a user of the Czech language at the level of a native speaker so that she can be classified as a bilingual child. The linguistic mistakes she makes in her speech stem often from insufficient vocabulary or insufficient knowledge of one of the language phenomena.
Teacher in e-learning

The aim of this paper was to examine and describe the role of the teacher in a specific and relatively new area of the English language teaching - e-Iearning. As the basis for the analysis, the role of the teacher in the instructional process in general was looked into in the introductory part. Teacher was first analysed generally, as they are described in literature on teaching psychology and sociology. Further on, the analysis narrowed down to educational theories and the roles they assigned to teachers. Moreover, the literature of the teacher of English as a Foreign Language was looked at and the roles that modern methodology assigns teachers were commented on. We have found out that although modern 75 methodology calls for learner-centred instruction, the teacher plays an irreplaceable role in the process and all methods and educational theories are at least partly delimited by the role of the teacher.
Providing feedback in on-line lessons of Czech as a second language

This thesis deals with providing feedback in Czech lessons as a second language in a distance environment. Using a descriptive analysis of the transcripts of four video recordings of Czech for foreigners, we focused our attention on the places where teachers provided feedback to students. The aim of this work was to find out what means teachers use for this. We were also interested in whether the online environment had any effect on the provision of feedback. A questionnaire was developed to assess teachers' views on providing feedback. The role of multilingualism in Czech language courses for Erasmus+ students

Multilingualism is currently a much discussed topic, especially abroad. The objective of this thesis is to examine whether and eventually how multilingualism affects the process of learning Czech as a second language within Erasmus+ language courses. The language skills of both the lecturers and the students of these courses meet the EU language policy requirement to master at least two foreign languages. In the theoretical framework of the thesis, the terms multilingualism and bilingualism are explained, citing mainly foreign scholarly literature. The focus is then shifted to the EU language policy and the current state of research into multilingualism in language teaching. In the last part of the theoretical framework, multilingualism didactics and the communicative approach are introduced. The chief data source for the following empirical research are audio recordings of Czech language courses for Erasmus+ students of the Faculty of Arts, Charles University in Prague. The data gathered from the classes are then analyzed and interpreted, with a focus on the manifestations of multilingualism.
