Self-tracking and running: a sociological analysis

This thesis focuses on self-tracking, which mean monitoring and recording information about oneself using digital technologies and its use by runners in the Czech Republic. The main aim of this thesis is to describe the Czech running community through a detailed sociological analysis, and to answer a question: Why runners use self-tracking and how they benefit from it? The theoretical part firstly deals with the topic of self-tracking itself, then examines the uses and gratifications theory and the theory of online communities. The analytical part is devoted to description, analysis and interpretation of the results of the author's own survey, in which 844 runners of whom 754 practice self-tracking participated. Several hypotheses concerning sociodemographic structure, running characteristics, motivation, gratifications and safety were formulated. Five key motives (self-control, orientation to result, self-improvement, habit and social interaction) that lead runners to use self-tracking devices were identified through exploratory factor analysis. The role of school in the process of forming an active citizenship through the eyes of Czech political activists

The aim of the text is a critical sociological analysis of the role of the institution of school in the process of forming an active citizenship which is perceived by the author as a specific pattern of behaviour acquired during socialisation. The participation model of democracy, from which stems the Czech educational curriculum, aims to raise informed and active youth adhering to democratic values. Formal education as one of the actors of secondary socialisation is the only publicly controlled tool of education of citizens. Although the citizenship education is formally a part of the curriculum, contemporary research in the Czech environment shows that school does not play a significant role in political socialisation of young people. For this reason, the author of the text looks at the formal education from a different perspective and discusses other aspects too. The key view for the author is the one of Czech political activists who she perceives as a necessary part of civil society and a prototype of active citizens. "When girls like girls": Lesbian Identity and Floorball

This bachelor thesis deals with constructing positive lesbian identity in female floorball. It examines the context of negotiation and the creation of one's own sexual identity. At the next level, it compares the declaration of identity outside of the sports environment. The theme explored by the view of feminist tradition is to bring an inner look at the formation of an identity "girls like girls". The work relates to already created homosexual categories and categories of lesbian identities. Based on the analysis of semi-structured interviews, a typology of sexual identities is created. The work concludes that floorball provides an important space for declaring sexual identity. At the same time, it accelerates the declaration of sexual identity through openness, contact with sexual minorities, gender neutrality, gender segregation and time consuming.
Olympics and Media: Gender Inequalities in Displaying Czech Sportsmen and Sportswomen

This thesis deals with gender inequalities in media presentation of Czech athletes during Winter Olympic Games 2014 in Sochi. The rationale for conducting research on this topic is the International Olympic Committee's statement that the Olympics in Pyeongchang 2018 were more gender-balanced than before. The paper focuses on the media image of Czech Olympic team that was made by website iSport for the period from 7. 2. 2014 to 23. 2. 2014. The work stems from the assumption of feminist theory that a male athlete plays a dominant role in sports, which can be a source of gender inequalities during big international sports events. Such expressions of gender inequalities are mainly sex sports typing, gender labeling, and the specific addressing, especially of sportswomen. The introductory section describes dynamics of the sport and media relationships and a subsequent connection with the gender. The qualitative content analysis summarizes main theme topics of information notes about Olympic events. Ice hockey as a symbol of national identity: the Czech society 20 years after the Nagano triumph

This bachelor's thesis deals with the process of building national identity through sport, specifically ice hockey. The thesis focuses primarily on the aspects contributing to the reproduction of the Czech national identity. Important aspects are mainly symbols, which remind us of the individual's belonging to the nation, as well as the media, which significantly help to the mythization of sports events. One of the events that played an important role in the formation of the Czech national identity is the 1998 Nagano Olympics. The success of the Czech hockey team in this tournament made part of the history twenty years ago; there are still many legacies of this triumph nowadays. The thesis is based on a research that combined several methods. I obtained the data through participant observation of the national team matches broadcasts, I also analysed documents that referred to the legacies of Czech victory, and I carried out semi-structured interviews with ice hockey fans. The interviews suggest that the victory of the Nagano hockey players, with the contribution of the media and banal nationalism, underwent the process of mythization, and thus played a significant role in the Czech national identity building.
Identity plug-ins: Towards post-human theory of informational privacy

The text is concerned with informational privacy in infosphere. Infosphere according to Luciano Floridi presents a new type of techno-scientific ecology in which western societies organize themselves and operate. Privacy is conceptualized as a labor of division in the infosphere, where every (quasi)subject is mobilizing various actors in order to protect her outer boundaries and resist objectification. The labor of division in infosphere is then compared with similar types of labor in different ecologies and societies (i.e. Amazonia and Mongolia) in sake of identification of crucial agents carrying out this labor of division based on negotiations of categories such as human/non-human or self/non-self. The text distinguishes three types of actors of division according to three interconnected intruders; traders, overseers and criminals. The argument then is that through mobilization of various dividing actors depending on the type of intruder, different (quasi)subjects emerge, thus subjectivity in the infosphere is a political project co- constructed by non/human dividing actors. The last chapter than proposes general ethical directions which might be helpful in the future, when considering the problems of lack of privacy.
Barriers to Continuing Education of the Unemployed in the Age Groups Endangered in the Labor Market

These age groups are characterized by a low rate of participation in continuing education, while having very specific needs and problems. The aim of this work is to identify the most frequent barriers in the education of the above-mentioned groups, to find out the differences between them and to explore their sociodemographic predictors. For the statistical analysis, data from the Kooperace research conducted by the Fund of Further Education was used. The first chapter defines the concepts of adult education, disadvantaged groups in labor market and introduces different concepts of barriers to education. Constructing the continuity of rational and moral dimensions of value in expert institutions

In this theoretically focused thesis I make use of the example of vaccination against infectious diseases to show how expert institutions define value of its products through constructing a continuity of its rational and moral dimensions. This continuity allows rational and moral arguments to naturally complement themselves in a coherent discoursive and procedural frame which I call an institutional regime of the value of vaccination. Regarding general public, its crucial products are sanctions in the form of imputing decisional competence to those who vaccinate and decisional incompetence to those who do not. This competence is understood as both sign of optimal rationality and morally responsible behaviour which takes into account the common good. But besides external imputation, a decisional competence is also acquired through individual activity, which takes on a special importance for those who reject vaccination. They manage the imputations of incompetence through constituting alternative definitions of the value of health care in which they stress the importance of natural treatment and individual responsibility. Culinary identity - are we, what we eat?

The thesis presents a view on a group of amateur chefs - the culinary experts- for whom the cooking has become an essential part of their identity. On the basis of the analysis of semistructured interviews and the participating observation the author studies the tricks of creating of identity of the culinary experts and their life-style. Present day liquid modernity and hyper-consumerist society in a way offers the space for paying attention to oneself and for building an own life project. The culinary art has become for some individuals very important hobby, not only because of the fact that through it they can give pleasure to their bodies, but it can also improve their social status. The text shows that the culinary art brings to amateur chefs the possibility to dedicate their life to cooking, regardless the social stratification or economical class they come from. On the other hand, there is a distinctive dimension which shows that merely the consumption of fine food does not make a fine food eater or a fine diner. The group of the culinary experts is building an exceptional social status though distinctive tricks of consumption of so called "good food".
