Hunger games: Discourses of the G7 New Alliance for Food Security and Nutrition in Africa
Milerová Prášková, Dagmar ; Novotný, Josef (advisor) ; Daněk, Petr (referee) ; Profant, Tomáš (referee)
The New Alliance for Food Security and Nutrition was launched in 2012 as the main G7 initiative to combat hunger in Africa. Its proclaimed objective was to facilitate cooperation between selected African countries and private sector companies by promoting pro-market reforms and investments in African agriculture. However, it quietly disappeared from public space around 2015, seven years before the end of its programming period. The New Alliance can thus be considered and analysed as a case of failed policy, which has not achieved its declared goals. In this thesis, I examine the discourses of this initiative in official documents of selected G7 countries, focusing on how this initiative was constructed and framed in the wider context of their approaches to global food security and hunger. The selection of the analysed countries (USA, France, and the UK) reflects their distinct positions on the New Alliance. This analysis is supplemented by discourse analysis of western and African civil society actors who took an active role either in a New Alliance project or the anti-New Alliance campaign. I assumed that examination and confrontation of different positions of these countries with respect to the New Alliance may uncover different conceptualisations of food security and hunger in Africa associated...
Food deficit in developing countries: factors of origin, regional differentiation, possible solutions
Ližanová, Iveta ; Jančák, Vít (advisor) ; Milerová Prášková, Dagmar (referee)
This bachelor's thesis deals with food deficit issues in developing countries. First and foremost, it is dedicated to defining basic concepts that explain the food deficit. It then looks at the range of individual food deficit indicators, at different scale levels. Using graphs and cartograms made from available data, regional differentiation of malnutrition is shown. Based on a literature review, the extent of the food deficit is described, as well as which age and gender groups are most affected and for what reason. For selected factors causing malnutrition in developing countries, their dependence is verified by statistical analysis, namely correlation analysis and calculation of the Pearson and Spearman correlation factors. Finally, the options for addressing the food deficit according to the literary reshuffle are presented. The key words: Hunger, malnutrition, undernourishment, food insecurity, developing countries
Circular economy in the Czech surroundings - experience of companies and the view of experts
Leová, Leona ; Rynda, Ivan (advisor) ; Milerová Prášková, Dagmar (referee)
The diploma thesis deals with the concept of circular economy (hereinafter CE) and its application in several Czech and one multinational company. On these specific examples of companies, the work shows how circularity is achieved, with all the essentials of this fact, what support for the concept is offered in the Czech Republic and, last but not least, what obstacles and problems the companies face. Along with this practical experience, opinions by theoretical experts who deal with the issue in their profession are further examined. The aim of the work was to map the matter of use of secondary raw materials and other principles of CE in both practical and theoretical spheres of knowledge, and where possible, to compare these two views. Furthermore, the work focuses on the benefits of real use of the principles of CE in the Czech conditions from an environmental point of view. In its theoretical part, it first addresses the issue of waste in general, especially from the perspective of a global problem. It presents the development, current situation and forecast of the size of waste generation, including its impacts. Furthermore, it has introduced the concept of CE, its various concepts and definitions, together with the main principles. Subsequently, it presents the real adoption of the concept by...
Food security and staple crops
Čermáková, Lenka ; Milerová Prášková, Dagmar (advisor) ; Jančák, Vít (referee)
Nowadays, with growing population especially in developing countries, hunger and poverty are a huge problem. To reduce or eliminate hunger and poverty, the concept of food security was introduced. This concept describes an ideal situation to be reached. The first part of my work introduces this concept and introduces four basic pillars of food security. Food security is closely related crops, so the second part of my work focuses on selected staple crops that play a role in realizing the food security concept. These crops are rice, corn, potatoes and wheat. The concept will be fulfilled when all four pillars are met simultaneously. There are many obstacles in the way, from economic to climate ones. Changes need to be adapted whether through change in agriculture (more mechanization and electrification) or by improving the conditions of the farmers themselves. Improving the infrastructure will allow the consumer base to be broadened and thus revenue increased. The result is that everything depends on the crops themselves which have the potential to eliminate hunger. It is necessary to choose a crop that can provide sufficient energy intake and its cultivation will not be financially expensive at the expense of farmers' livelihoods. Avoiding food degradation in poor storage or production can save...

In the beginning, it is important to select a seed, to grow a crop that can provide income and that will not grow at the expense of farmers' livelihoods. Avoiding food degradation in poor storage or production can save many crops. With...
