Hashir, Angelina Duaa ; Miessler, Jan (advisor) ; Numerato, Dino (referee)
The study focuses on the Pakistani Shia Muslim diaspora residing in Oslo. The study will explore how living in a technologically advanced era of the internet, along with having a diaspora identity, influences the cultural and religious practices of the post-migration generation. Furthermore, it will explore how it impacts their association and perception towards their homeland and religion and provides them with a sense of belonging living in a multicultural society. The study employs a qualitative approach, conducted through semi-structured interviews with seven members, four from the post-migration generation and three from the migration generation. Thematic analysis reveals how the internet connected the diaspora community to their religious and cultural roots, i.e., Pakistan. It showcased how their perception of culture and religion has evolved and changed due to exposure to the internet, which has helped them learn more about their culture and religion and made them more culturally aware. The findings highlight the complex interplay between media, religious identity, cultural identity formation, and diaspora experiences among the Pakistani Shia Muslims in Oslo. Furthermore, it explores the variation in religious and cultural identity between the two generations and how technology may play a...
Comparative analysis of climate change conference coverage in India and UK newspapers: framing difference
Devaraj, Yoheswari ; Miessler, Jan (advisor) ; Nečas, Vlastimil (referee)
Newspapers from India, a developing nation, and the UK, a developed one, are the focus of the investigation. These nations stand for a variety of social, political, and cultural situations that will undoubtedly have an impact on how the climate change conference is depicted. The thesis adds to an improved comprehension of the role played by the media in shaping climate change rhetoric and communications in various cultural and socioeconomic settings via this comparative examination. Considering the cultural differences between the two countries (developed vs. developing), there were similarities in the framing choices, which highlights the influence of the dominant global media narratives on how climate change is covered. It is acknowledged that this dominant position is essentially the result of fundamental historical inequalities that have led to an accumulation of political and economic power in the West. this was accomplished by examining five distinct frameworks to comprehend how they were used in the four newspapers' coverage of COP27.
Echo of Moscow's coverage of the Ukraine war from 2014 to 2022
Saidova, Aida ; Nečas, Vlastimil (advisor) ; Miessler, Jan (referee)
The media outlets Echo of Moscow, Novaya Gazeta, Dozhd TV, and Radio Svoboda are all seen as counter-propaganda outlets in contemporary Russia. As a result, these leftist media outlets have been more targeted by the law since Putin took office. In this thesis, I investigate particularly how Echo of Moscow reported on the conflict between Russia and Ukraine. From its inception, the Echo had operated under the guiding tenet that "all meaningful points of view on events should be presented". However, the station was controlled 66.5% by state-owned Gazprom-Media, meanwhile, the rest controlled by journalists, including the radio station staff, owns the remaining 33.5% (Slavtcheva-Petkova, 2018). Hence, the thesis questions: can the station assert impartiality while accepting funds from Gazprom Media? The study employs the journalistic notions of objectivity and fairness in the framework of a quantitatively-oriented qualitative content analysis of source practices in radio broadcasts by Echo of Moscow. In order to provide satisfactory outcomes, author utilises a quantitative content analysis of hundreds of reports and numerous sources to examine the diversity of viewpoints expressed in Echo Moscow broadcasts published from 2014 to 2022. In the end, author (a) concludes with a summary of the study's key...

Kejhova, Natalie ; Jirák, Jan (advisor) ; Miessler, Jan (referee)
Covid-19 did not only take over the lives of citizens in 2020, it also took over the media worldwide and the Czech Republic is no exception. Journalists always held the responsibility of portraying information to the public on major events. However during the first wave of the pandemic in particular journalists were seen as having a new sense of power which was that their words could influence the public's opinion on policies issued by the government like whether to wear a mask or not. The findings of this thesis showed that the publication Mladá fronta Dnes overall published articles that were informative and matter of fact whereas the publication Hospodářské noviny resulted in being more critical to the regulations that were issued by the government resulting in more of a discussion. Overall this thesis looked at how media frames are used by journalists in articles to portray particular ideological standpoints. Keywords Pandemic, Coivid-19, Media, Media Frames

Levenstam, Vasily ; Miessler, Jan (advisor) ; Gomes Lapa, Tiago (referee)
This study examines the characteristics and purposes of propaganda narratives employed in the media coverage of the Russo-Ukrainian War. Through a content analysis of 89 articles from three Russian media outlets, namely governmental, affiliated with the government, and free-non-governmental, the study aims to shed light on the nature and objectives of these narratives. By employing comparative analysis and coding techniques, the research identifies and describes the propaganda narratives present in the articles, providing real-life examples to illustrate their usage. The major findings reveal the presence of both strategic and tactical propaganda narratives, with distinct characteristics and goals. The study contributes to understanding the role of propaganda in shaping public perception and offers insights into the dynamics of information dissemination during conflict situations. Media Framing: Transformation of Nursultan Nazarbayev's Image in the US Media
Tokayeva, Assem ; Miessler, Jan (advisor) ; Jeřábek, Hynek (referee)
The thesis deals with U.S. media coverage of Kazakhstan's first president Nursultan Nazarbayev between 2011 and 2022. Using Bourdieu's theory of journalistic field and Entman's concept of media framing, the content analysis of five different media outlets shows that while commercial newspapers (NYT, WP, WSJ) were more critical than non- profit online media outlets (Eurasianet, RFE/RL) regarding Nazarbayev and his regime during events that challenged his power; their overall coverage of the country, its leader and his legacy has been restrained or even credited Nazarbayev for various achievements. Differences in the degree of critical stance were also identified between the two non- profit media. Providing an overview of Kazakh government-funded lobbying information campaigns abroad, the thesis confirms the importance of research into the use of international media platforms by authoritarian regimes aiming at creating a favorable image abroad. Keywords: Nursultan Nazarbayev, Kazakhstan, media framing, lobbyism, U.S. media, RFE/RL, Eurasianet, NYT, WSJ, WP Range of thesis: 52 pages, i.e. 119,088 characters
