Jinochová, Tereza ; Miessler, Jan (advisor) ; Groman, Martin (referee)
The diploma thesis Relation between Jair Bolsonaro and traditional media deals with examining and describing the development of Brazilian media system. Traditional mass media in Brazil used to be during the history considered hegemonic, however this approach to the media is changing since the entry of Jair Bolsonaro to presidency. This thesis deals with the description of traditional media owner structure, influence of evangelical churches on political and media scene and concerns also with a short introduction into historical context of operation of traditional media in the country. The main concern of this thesis are two biggest Brazilian journals, O Globo a Folha de São Paulo, which have the biggest reach in the country. Both these journals belong to traditional media companies, that have been on the Brazilian media market since the beginning of the 20th century. With the help of discourse analysis of articles from both journals and tweets of Jair Bolsonaro this thesis aims to describe the development of the relation between media and president since his candidature up to the present.

Kroupa, Jan ; Miessler, Jan (advisor) ; Podzimek, Jan (referee)
This diploma thesis aims to apply the securitization concept in the field of media studies, while also exploring the role of media as an autonomous actor in the (de)securitization process, being able to produce a unique type of discourse, independent from the discourse of political actors. The thesis seeks to confirm the disparities between the discourse of media and political elites on the plain of the (de)securitization theory. This is examined within the topic of the covid-19 epidemic, from 1st January until 12th March, when the state of emergency has been announced by the Czech government. The thesis is organized as a discourse analysis on the basis of the Foucauldian historical method. The analytical chapter examines seven topical aspects representing the uniqueness of the coronavirus discourse during the examined time period. In addition, the thesis also analyzes the reproduction of the discourse of political elites in media. Making more space at the table: how The New Yorker portrays family dynamics in its audiovisual content
Novaes Buffa, Fernanda ; Miessler, Jan (advisor) ; Géla, František (referee)
The purpose of this study is to generate a debate about the portrayal of immigrant families in The New Yorker documentaries. The general objective is to understand how visual framing and the use of mise-en-scène elements such as set design, lighting and space, play a crucial role in communicating the representations of immigrant families and influencing the viewer's perception towards this group. In this study, the method used is close textual analysis on shots where family dynamics unraveled in seven documentaries featured in The New Yorker: Ale Libre; Guanajuato Norte; Seasons; Sing Me a Lullaby; Team Meryland; The Prince of Luna Park; and Yves & Variation. Findings indicate that immigrant families are, mainly, shown: 1) indoors, during the day; 2) with high-key lighting; and 3) with positive, closed, and deep space settings. The camera distance that appeared the most is "medium close-up". The findings advance how immigrant families are framed through mise-en-scène. This study contributes to the understanding that the portrayal of immigrant families in documentaries is a result of not only economic, social, political, and cultural tendencies and shifts, but also of elaborated constructions through mise-en-scène elements in a frame. This study has implications for research on film studies,...

Bukhari, Syeda Allia ; Němcová Tejkalová, Alice (advisor) ; Miessler, Jan (referee)
This thesis attempts to explore the coverage of the yearly women's march in Pakistan, better known as the Aurat March, in the local and Urdu media of the country. Aurat March is one of the most contested events in the South Asian country, creating polarised opinions - in favour and against - in society. The same divided rhetoric is seen in the media. The thesis looks into 80 articles, covering a span of the last two years, from 2019 till 2021, by 4 local Urdu publications: Ummat, Express Urdu, Jang and NawaiWaqt and applies grounded theoretical methods to find how the march is portrayed in the media, the latter's perception of Western-style feminism and whether or not the coverage is influenced by religious nationalism and patriarchal values.
Challenges for alternative journalism in Indonesia: A case study of Project Multatuli
Tivany, Arzia Halida ; Miessler, Jan (advisor) ; Němcová Tejkalová, Alice (referee)
From 1967 until 1998, Indonesia was under the New Order repressive regime where the media was heavily controlled by the state. After the reform, the tight control over media ended and media liberalization started, inciting media concentration, conglomeration, and commercialization. In this climate, alternative media in Indonesia has emerged to challenge the dominant narrative presented by mainstream media. Project Multatuli emerged in 2021 as the first membership-focused media in Indonesia, carrying the mission of the social movement, by introducing a new type of ethical and sustainable business model within the Indonesian market. The aim of this study is to investigate the challenges and strategies employed by Project Multatuli as well as to identify the main distinction compared to mainstream media outlets. Relying on 9 qualitative interviews and a focus group discussion consisting of 3 participants, Project Multatuli is found to fit the criteria of radical alternative media as well as public service media. Results show that challenges are structural, mostly due to the unprepared press infrastructure in the country and challenging market demography. Meanwhile, their strategies to overcome the challenges are what makes Project Multatuli different from mainstream media outlets. These include their...

Development of cosmetic advertising in lifestyle magazines from the perspective of diversity
Bäumeltová, Klára ; Reifová, Irena (advisor) ; Miessler, Jan (referee)
The concept of diversity has been a topic of discussion for several years, especially in connection with beauty. More brands are trying to show the widest and most diverse people in their communication and advertising who could identify with their philosophy. Not only the visual side of media content changes, but also verbal communication, which is aimed at the widest possible audience. The aim of the thesis is to find out how diverse advertising content associated with beauty appears in traditional print media, specifically in the lifestyle magazines Harper's Bazaar and Žena a život. Based on multimodal analysis, this qualitative research offers an insight into the development of diversity in cosmetic advertising between years 1994 and 2019. The first part of the diploma thesis is dedicated to theoretical basis of social and media construction of reality, beauty representation in the media and diversity issues. The next part focuses on the interpretation of the methodology of research, followed by the presentation of results of the conducted analysis and their summary. The analysis also reveals key topics that appear in the advertising content of both of these periodicals. The results show that although some shifts in diversity are evident, the print media still show a rather traditional and...
The Phenomenon of the "Intellectual Dark Web"
Drake, Daniel ; Miessler, Jan (advisor) ; Lütke Notarp, Ulrike (referee)
This paper investigates the topic of the "Intellectual Dark Web" - a supposed grouping of academics, authors and other personalities, whose opinions are deemed to be controversial. Due to a lack of academic coverage, the paper pinpoints the background from which this term had arisen and tries to find out whether the group can be considered a coherent entity. The research part of the thesis is divided into two phases. In the first, the three most prominent protagonists (Jordan Peterson, Sam Harris, and Ben Shapiro) are subjected to a Critical discourse analysis from which the five most recurrent themes emerge. These are identity, free speech, anti-left, anti-elite, and appeal to reason. Subsequently, ten content pieces for each of the authors are analysed to find out whether these five topics overlap across time and different types of media formats. The biggest overlap was detected in the anti-left rhetoric, although there seemed to be a subtle difference in what the respective men mean when they use the word "Left". Similar conclusions were made on the topic of identity and the opposition to elites. The analysis also showed that in addition to the identified common topics, each of the authors focuses on a somewhat different area, in which, due to their different ideological and, above all,...
Open-source Intelligence in the Czech Media Landscape
Bartoš, Vojtěch ; Hroch, Miloš (advisor) ; Miessler, Jan (referee)
This thesis maps out the use of open-source intelligence in the Czech media landscape. Given the interdisciplinary nature of the field, a broad theoretical foundation introducing concepts such as Web 2.0, participatory culture, alternative media or the open-source movement is presented. Furthermore, the theoretical part of the thesis includes a classification of basic open-source intelligence techniques and raises an example of an organisation producing open-source intelligence reports. The empirical part of this thesis utilised a mixed approach of both qualitative and quantitative research methods. First, a quantitative analysis of Twitter posts categorised as written in Czech mentioning the keyword 'osint' published from May 2014 to March 2022 was realised. Results indicate a growth in the topic's popularity in Czech internet discourse and suggest a causality between the 2022 Russian invasion of Ukraine and a rising interest in open-source intelligence techniques. The qualitative part of the research makes use of semi-structured in-depth interviews conducted with 5 prominent Czech media actors using open-source intelligence in their media production process. The gathered data was subsequently analysed using the grounded theory. The results provide a comprehensive list of Czech-specific sources...
