Science skills of 15-years old students in the Czech Republic in the international survey PISA

Title: Scientific Literacy of 15-years old pupils in the Czech Republic in the International Survey PISA Author: Pavel Petrášek Department: Department of Physics Education Supervisor: PhDr. Martin Chvál, Ph.D., Department of Physics Education Abstract: My thesis focuses on the results of 15-year old pupils in selected tasks of the international survey PISA. It contains a brief introduction to the methodology of a survey and its realization in our conditions. The thesis presents relations between pupils` success and other variables found out in additional questionnaires, such as sex, parents` education, relation to mathematics or pupils` social and economical backgrounds. Besides the thesis contains the comparison of the importance of individual variables and results from the years 2000 and 2003. The thesis can be used as a theme for further research of mentioned relations and their comparison in a longer time horizon with other results. Electronic form of my thesis is on enclosed CD. Science items in PISA research - analysis of czech pupil`s results

This work is devoted to analysis of findings about czech pupils in scientific tests made by PISA in years 2000, 2003 and 2006. There are basic information about PISA's research at the beginning of this work. Next chapters are about scientific literacy, about the ways of evaluation and presentation of the output and about a structure of questions used in research. This work is mainly focused in scientific questions and it brings particular analyses of both general result of czech pupils and their results in accordance to many aspects of scientific literacy.

Physics in household - nontraditional set of the school experiments

The unusual set of experiments created as part of the diploma thesis includes experiments related to the mechanics and properties of fluids. Experiment implementation is accessible to all future experimenters, as only simple tools are used. The textis aimed primarily at basic and high school students. However, it will be equally useful to their teachers. The diploma thesis also provides a concise review of similar sets of experiments, describes the concept of the set of experiments, offers a how-to manual and lists the means used to put the work together. Pupil`s preconceptions in geometrical optics

I was concerned with the preconceptions of the pupils in the area of geometric optics in my diploma work. I did the research among the pupils of grammar schools and multi-annual secondary schools. The used test contained ten questions. My choice of the questions was based on the researches concerning the misconceptions in optics that have been already done. I also mention the survey of these researches in my diploma work. I compiled the summary of the textbooks that are used at grammar schools and in the lower degrees of secondary schools in the next part. These textbooks are focused on the topics contained in the questions of the test. The survey of the testing results creates main part of my diploma work. I tested before and after the teaching of optics 162 pupils from eight classes of grammar schools and multi-annual secondary schools took part in the investigation. The table with the most frequent misconceptions that were ascertained during the testing is part of this survey. I devoted to the differences in the results between the pupils from grammar schools and multi-annual secondary schools and also the differences in the results of boys and girls.

Solved problems in mechanics

: In terms of the thesis an electronic collection of solved problems was created. The solved problems embrace the mechanics of solid object theme. There are total 17 of solved problems in the collection. The problems cover the level from secondary school to introductory university lectures on classical mechanics. The problems are selected from existing collection and publications. Every problem contains an assigment, a structured help. a detailed solution and a result. In the first part of the thesis a problem and an aim of the thesis are specified. Next, the overview of the subject matter which is teached in primary schools, secondary schools and at university follows. The common schoolbooks are also described. The last part of the thesis describes the characteristics, the technical solution, the structure and the content of the electronic collection of solved problems. In the conclusion the results of work and the future perspective are summerized. An attachment includes 5 solved problems. All solved problems and the text of the thesis are included in the electronic form on the enclosed CD.
