Security Policy of Neutral States After 9/11: Comparison of Selected European Countries
Vlček, Tomáš ; Karásek, Tomáš (advisor) ; Bahenský, Vojtěch (referee)
This bachelor's thesis compares Switzerland, Austria and Sweden as European neutral states and their activity in security policy. There are two dimensions for the comparison: peacekeeping dimension and counter-terrorism dimension. The time interval begins with the terrorist 9/11 attacks and continues to the present. In peacekeeping dimension the main focus is on contribution of units to peacekeeping missions. In counter-terrorism dimension the main focus is on strategy of global war on terror and strategy of combating terrorism. The result of this thesis is either confirmation or refutation of hypothesis about relationship between attitude to neutrality and activity in security policy. The assumption of this comparative study is that state with codified neutrality which is also mentioned in its foreign-security strategy is less active than state with non-codified neutrality not mentioned in its foreign-security strategy.
Serbian elite manipulation as a cause of the war in Bosnia and Herzegovina
Kučová, Markéta ; Karásek, Tomáš (advisor) ; Mlejnek, Josef (referee)
This bachelor thesis analyses the theme of the cause of the war in Bosnia and Herzegovina in 1992-1995. It specifically elaborates the theory of manipulative elites on the case of the Serbian political elite, which is generally considered to be crucial for launching hatreds in Yugoslavia after the change of regime at the turn of the 80s and 90s. Territorially, the work is focused on the region of the former Yugoslavia, with emphasis on Serbia and Bosnia and Herzegovina. It analyses the period just before the outbreak of the Yugoslav conflict, i.e. at the turn of the 1980s and 1990s, including the beginning of the first half of the nineties. The work is conducted in the form of a case study. The purpose of this bachelor thesis is to verify the validity of the theory of manipulative elites on the case of Serbian elites' behaviour at the turn of the 80s and 90s of 20th century and the impact of conflictual strategies, which they created, on the triggering of ethnic conflict in Bosnia and Herzegovina. In the first part of my thesis I present competitive theories explaining the causes of ethnic conflicts and I also justify the choice of Gagnon's theory of manipulative elites from 1990s. The following theoretic chapter describes individual components of the theory in detail. Then I apply these components...

The current atmosphere of regional relations covered by uncertainty and distrust among competing sides...
Syria and Responsibility to Assist: A New Approach to Conflict Resolution?
Lanková, Kateřina ; Karásek, Tomáš (advisor) ; Ditrych, Ondřej (referee)
The main aim of the master thesis titled "Syria and the concept responsibility to assist: new approach towards conflict resolution?" is to find out whether the extension of the doctrine of responsibility to protect by the concept of responsibility to assist that is based on the support of nonviolent movements could work as a new approach towards conflict resolution and thanks to this it could constitute another way of international assistance and civilian protection in cases when it is the regime that perpetrates the violence against its own population. For this reason the thesis, via the Syrian civil war that offers wide range of internal responses to the violence perpetrated by the regime against civilians, focuses on three different forms of international involvement and assistance. These are the international military intervention under the third pillar of R2P, the backing of domestic violent groups and insurgents and last but not least the assistance to nonviolent movements and civil initiatives in the form of R2A as a potential expansion of the second pillar under the R2P doctrine. These approaches are analyzed with regard to the issues of state sovereignty and moral responsibility to protect civilians that arises from the inconsistency of these two aspects in relation to any kind of...

Daniel, Jan ; Karásek, Tomáš (advisor) ; Bliesemann de Guevara, Berit (referee) ; Bureš, Oldřich (referee)
Bibliographic Record DANIEL, JAN. International Peacekeeping and Hybrid Order: UNIFIL II in South Lebanon. Prague, 2017. 257 p. Doctoral dissertation (Ph.D.) Charles University in Prague, Faculty of Social Sciences, Institute of Political Studies. Thesis supervisor: JUDr. PhDr. Tomáš Karásek, Ph.D. Abstract The thesis explores an engagement of a UN peace operation with a local political order. It builds on understanding of peacekeeping as policing of certain vision of international and local order and on that basis, it explores practices and politics of keeping peace. Drawing on the study of UNIFIL II, the UN peacekeeping operation deployed in South Lebanon, the study focuses on practices by which peacekeepers perform their policing duties in the local order, which is marked by entanglements between state and non- state ordering authorities and different practice of stateness. By doing so, it seeks to advance the research on the everyday practices of peacekeeping, as well as the research on local hybridity of peace operations and engagement of liberal actors with the local difference. Drawing on the debates in critical peace studies and works on practice-oriented approaches to research on liberal governmentality, it makes the case for focusing on the peacekeepers' engagement with the 'local' order on the...
Between East and West - Strategic Potential Analysis of Turkey
Ruth, Adrienne ; Karásek, Tomáš (advisor) ; Mclaren, Lauren (referee)
Despite the vast research into Turkey as a rising power, few argue that Turkey is not a rising power. Scholars highlight that Turkey's economy, position, foreign policy, regional influence and ties to the West have helped contribute or sustain its rise. However, many of these assessments are dated not taking into consideration recent events that have cast doubt on the prospect of Turkey being a rising power. Combining academic and intelligence research, this study takes the form of an OSINT analysis. Utilising a mixed method approach, Turkey is analysed utilising strategic potential analysis. The analysis, throughout the seven factors (physical, resources and communications, human, economic, political and administrative, and military), found that Turkey's weaknesses outnumber, at times negating, and in some instances invalidating the strengths which past scholars have tended to emphasise. The scope and depth of this paper not only highlighted the shortcomings of past scholars' limited and narrow studies, but showed that Turkey neither exhibits the ascendancy to be a rising power nor the potential to transition to a great power. In the end, Turkey's decline in influence allows for other states to play a larger role in the region. As it is no longer seen as a model for secular politics and Islam,...
A Case Study on British Muslims: Recent European Political Developments and Self-Censorship on Social Media
Chaudhry, Sana ; Karásek, Tomáš (advisor) ; Hardman, Helen (referee)
Numerous studies have established a notable securitisation of Muslims in mainstream media, following 9111. However, there remained a gap where this securitisation was yet to be analysed comprehensively, in relation to the effect it had on self-censorship online. My primary hypothesis was that in light of recent political developments in Europe, increased lslamophobia had resulted in British Muslims imposing self- censorship on their expression on Facebook. This hypothesis was tested by evaluating empirical data from 10 interviews, and 62 questionnaires with British Muslims. My analysis concluded that the knowledge of government surveillance was causing some British Muslims to inadvertently alter their behaviour online. Moreover, 58% of questionnaire respondents maintained that online lslamophobia had affected their willingness to express opinions. However, the percentage of interviewees disagreeing was more significant. Most interviewees argued that online discussions had flourished on Facebook, and consequently, they were less likely to self-censor. My empirical data further highlighted gendered and geographical dimensions to lslamophobia in the UK. Ultimately, my study forms part of an emergent body of research on self-censorship on social media platforms, and will contribute to further studies...
