Media response to the end of Maya calendar as the end of the world in 2012

The diploma thesis aims to find out what was the media image of the end of the Mayan calendar as the supposed end of the world in 2012. A a number of theories, reflections and predictions were made about what would probably happen on December 21, 2012. The apocalyptic predictions of the end of the world appeared most often. Probably due to deeper ignorance of the theme and attractiveness of catastrophic scenarios, the end of the Mayan calendar has become a widespread phenomenon that resonated across society and has become a frequent subject of media stories. The analysis of media content investigated the extent to which the 2012 phenomenon of the selected media was really devoted, what kind of approach to the topic the media took and whether it encouraged fear or uncertainty in society. The thesis provides a sufficient theoretical basis and historical context that the subsequent analysis can then rely on.
Recontextualization of Non-Governmental Organizations in Discourse of Czech Television's News and Public Affairs

This thesis is concerned with processes of decontextualization and recontextualization of non-governmental organizations in discourse of news and public affairs of Czech television. Due to the so called european migrant crisis and other domestic or foreign events, which have recently taken dominant place in TV news, critique of Czech television's broadcasting has increased significantly. Mostly it's aimed towards supposed bias, unbalanced reporting, tendentious way of approaching guests and favoritism of certain NGOs, just to name a few. Thesis is divided into three parts, gradually presenting theoretical framework including some related terms (intertextuality, dialogism, media bias etc.), methodological approach and practical elaboration of analysis. The method used is critical discourse analysis, loosely based on Fairclough's threedimensional model of CDA. Main goal of the analysis is to find out whether there are aspects of implicit ideologies or media bias in examined utterance.
Analysis of mediated texts dedicated to ICT in MF Dnes and Elle monthly in 1996 2002

This thesis uses feminist theories and concepts of representation and stereotypes to examine the representation of gender of ICT professionals in two periodicals - a medium-sizes "Serious" newspaper Mladá fronta Dnes and a women's life-style magazine Elle. The main purpose of the thesis was to perform the first analysis of representation of ICT professionals in media in the Czech Republic. The gender issue in this field of media representation has never been explored before in the Czech Republic. The thesis incorporates results from the years 1996 (before the massive proliferation of the Internet in the Czech Republic) and 2002 (when the massive use of Internet has really taken off). It examines news and feature magazine texts, illustrations, photos and cartoons. Content-analysis results revealed a much greater proportion of males than females in both content and illustrations. The hypothesis that "field of ICT will be represented as a masculine domain - this the masculinities will prevail in field of ICT" was confirmed. At the same time, the research indicated that an analysis of a more diversified sample of earlier Czech and Czechoslovak media sources is necessary in order to provide a more complex view of representation of male and femal professionals in the ICT field. Analysis of the first and the last year of the Bravo magazine and comparison of the content

This work aims to determine whether the content and main topics in the Czech version of Bravo magazine have changed over time. The aim is to analyze the contents of the Bravo magazine in the first and last year of its existence. Quantitative content analysis is used for this research. Advertisements, their occurrence and their size are also investigated. Subsequently, the results of these analyzes are interpreted, compared for the purpose of determining how these two years varied between each other, whether the topics presented changed. Magazines for teenage girls are a specific type of periodicals that enjoyed great popularity in their target audience. These magazines often create in young audience specific idea about the world around them, their effect on the reader is great. At the same time, the views of the world and the topics presented in these journals are often very specific, profiled. The most famous girl magazine is Bravo magazine. Its Czech mutation was published from 1991 until 2015, when it was canceled due to declining sales. The high school students world in their periodicals

The thesis is focused on the student journalism and its comparison with the content of national magazines intended for children and teenagers. The main aim of the thesis is to find out to what extent the topics in the school and national magazines are intertwined; what topics are most commonly found in national journals, and the extent to which students of (secondary) schools take on their journalistic work. The first (theoretical) part of the thesis is intended to characterize the principle and the main mission of the school magazines, ie what they serve and what their main benefits are for students or other readers. In this part, youth magazines are further specified in terms of the main target group of readers, content and relevant topics, language forms, etc. The theoretical part also explains basic concepts such as intelligence values and stereotypes in media presentation that will be used in analytical work. The aim of the practical part is to perform the brief characteristics of the studied sample of student and national magazines, including the criteria of their selection and especially the content analysis, exploring the most important and most frequented topics that the journals are exploring. PR goes on air: The media portrayal of Public Relations on Czech and British television scene

This paper aims to contribute to knowledge of stereotypization mechanisms, bringing in the case of PR consultants. Using lenses of the key cultural form - film and television series - the project analyses a way of representing PR profession, as depicted on TV screen both in Czech Republic and the United Kingdom, during 2000-2017 time period. Theoretical frame is drawing on key ideas on stereotype, narrowed by film usage, as seen in the work of Walter Lippmann and others. Main hypothesis is based on assumption that negative media portrayal might interfere with professional reputation. Analytical part employs qualitative, thematical analysis that focuses on interpretation of personal features, behavioral characteristics and depiction of reocurring key themes. The final outcome then presents a professional portrayal of Public Relations on Czech and British television scene, builded up on prominent steretypes, accompanied by relevant quotes to illustrate the point. The Role of Propaganda in Online Discourse of Selected Blood Donation Campaigns in the Czech Republic

The voluntary blood donation issue is topical in the Czech Republic since the number of blood donors has not yet reached the number of donors existing in the neighboring countries. Because of this fact the Czech Blood Cross together with transfusion services centers in the Czech Republic and in cooperation with various organizations, e.g. Czech Radio, do their best to obtain new voluntary blood donors via blood donation campaigns. Language of these campaigns is mainly of persuasive character. As such, it is often viewed as a means of white propaganda which stems from factual information and whose aim is to persuade the consumer of the message about the legitimacy of its ideology. White propaganda also helps to build trust which is lately used. In other words, the consumer of the message becomes blood donor. The thesis analyzes persuasive linguistic means of propaganda present in online discourse of the selected campaigns. On the basis of learned facts, the thesis also tries to characterize this discourse type; moreover, it makes suggestions for designing a new blood donation campaign.
Signiíficance of the moderator and television studio backround in TV show otázky Václava Moravce

This thesis is focused on analysis of political television show Otázky Václava Moravce. It is particularly focused on the period one year before and one year after the territorial change of the broadcasting studio which occured in the summer 2015. Firstly, through a quantitative analysis the change in the guest composition of the show is examined. Using the method of qualitative analysis it consequently captures fundamental semiotical elements of the studio and describes the role of the moderator in broadcasting. It also deals with moderator's rhetoric and the way in which his bias is expressed. The thesis sets out influences affecting final media release, among others socially-political background of the guests and influence of the studio and the moderator. Its aim is a comparison of these influences and possible explanation of the change that occured in the show Otázky Václava Moravce.
