Linguistic analysis of advertising texts in terms of age cathegory
Krajčová, Lenka ; Holanová, Radka (referee) ; Chejnová, Pavla (advisor)
In my thesis, I focused on advertisements and their impact on the recipients according to their age. I concentrated on commerce advertisements; mainly from TV, newspaper and magazines. I assessed manipulative strategies in concrete age categories and commented on verbal and nonverbal linguistic means. I presented examples of these linguistic means in real advertisements, which are attached to this thesis. In the individual chapters, I divided the typology according to the subject and according to the age of the recipient. I tried to point out the main differences in manipulative strategy and differences between used language means in concrete age categories.
Linguistic Analysis of Czech and English Sport Reposts
Seethaler, Martin ; Janovec, Ladislav (advisor) ; Holanová, Radka (referee)
The subject matter of the thesis is the journalistic genre of sport report and its goal is to compare the Czech reports with the English ones. The sport reports were studied from the viewpoint of the main linguistic disciplines: morphology, lexicology and syntax. At all these levels of the linguistic analysis the examples from some authentic texts were used to demonstrate the differences in many aspects of both languages (e.g. distribution of parts of speech; the use of non-finite verb forms; sport terminology; applied word formation processes; some means of stylistic diversity, complexity of sentence structure, specific syntactic structures) The pieces of knowledge achieved during the analysis were used to provide some general stylistic characterization of the examined genre. The results of the comprehensive analysis confirm both the concise nature of sport reports and some general differences between Czech and English as reflected in the reports. On the basis of the examined linguistic material the English sport reports can be defined by more extensive sport terminology, more complex sentence structure and broader repertoire of the means of stylistic condensation (shortening). The style of English sport reports is characteristic of its nominal nature using a lot of substantives, adjectives and pronouns....

Comparison of Syntactic Structure of Czech and Englisch Written and Spoken Advertisementes
Mazánková, Marcela ; Janovec, Ladislav (advisor) ; Holanová, Radka (referee)
In the introduced diploma thesis I worked with the collection of 200 written advertisements (Czech and English) and 200 TV commercials (Czech and English). The main task of the thesis was to describe the major features of Czech and English advertisements from the syntactic point of view, compare them and support by proper examples. The thesis also includes statistic data based on the analysis of individual items in the collected material. The thesis is divided into four chapters. The first one deals with the general features of advertisement, its position within the Czech stylistics, its forms and the possibilities that each form provides. The next chapter focuses on the analysis of the syntactic structure itself and examines the different ways of expressing the items being compared. The third chapter describes the advertisements in the context of pragmatics. Utterances used in advertisements are analyzed by exploring the theory of speech acts, theory of cooperative principle and maxims of politeness. The chapter also examines the different ways of addressing a receiver and his/her position in the discourse of advertising. The last chapter includes all findings and conclusions. Herčíková, Iva ; Holanová, Radka (referee) ; Janovec, Ladislav (advisor)
Czech Teachers Attitudes to the Formal Language This diploma thesis deals with the attitudes of the Czech teachers to the formal Czech language in several ways. The thesis is divided into two parts. The first one is the theoretical part and the second the practical one. In the first part, the author tries to define the problems that could appear when thinking about the basic question, which is inserted into the title. This theoretical part consists of many different approaches that can be traced in the Czech linguistics and that is the reason, why many Czech linguists are cited and their works has been used to discuss the topic from several points of view. The author tried to define the literary aspects of the Czech language, standardization of the language, its oral and written forms. It was also necessary to have a look at the ordinary situation of teaching Czech at schools and to define the attitudes of the teachers of Czech to one aspect of the subject they teach (to the formal language). This is mainly contained in chapter six. Chapter five includes an article called The Profile of a (Typical) Czech Teacher by Vladimir Smilauer (Liberec, 1969) and compares it to the current situation at the schools in the Czech Republic. The practical part was compiled from twenty-one questionaires that were...
The Idea of Acceptability in Youth Magazines
