Bilanová, Joanna ; Šoltys, Otakar (advisor) ; Hanzal, Jaromír (referee)
News service is an important aspect of the journalistic aktivity. I tis main goal is to inform the public about actualities. Even though the news service is subject to strict regulations, we can observe substantial differences between the programs of different TV channels and also between broadcasting in different countries. My work consists of an investigation into the differences in broadcasting in two bordering countries - the Czech Republic and Poland. This essay primarily focuses on the comparison of the major local broadcasting channels Události v regionech ČT Ostrava and Aktualności TVP Katowice. I am mainly concerned about the differences in production of individual news, beginning with the choice - making as to what news to include, through the production of the news, and finishing with the final broadcasting. My research question is: Are there any differences between local broadcasting of these two channels? The main method of investigation employed in this essay is a semiotic analysis together with a quantitative analysis and interviews.

Relation between the concept of humanitarian intervention and regime change: the case of Libya
Hanzal, Jaromír ; Střítecký, Vít (advisor) ; Hynek, Nikola (referee)
Diploma thesis Relation between the concepts of humanitarian intervention and regime change: the case of Libya is concerned with the study of military interventions after 1989 in the context of current theoretical discourse. It's main goal is assessing the 2011 NATO operation Unified Protector. The key question of thesis is, whether the intervention, due to the extensive reading of UNSC Resolution 1973, mandate still can be described in the terms of humanitarian intervention concept (in accordance with international law paradigm of R2P), or whether it rather had been a regime change. Based on primary data analysis, the paper shows that actors (most significantly the USA, France and Great Britain) contributing with a theoretically impartial military force, despite the immediate positive humanitarian outcome, helped significantly to overthrow the regime of Muammar Gaddafi. Due to the specifics of the operation, it can rather be described as a hidden regime change - a definition is also offered in the thesis. Based on the theoretical framework created by Michael Reisman, the author also assesses legitimacy of such deeds. The text is divided into three main chapters. Chapter one gives an account of broader context of just war theories, humanitarian intervention and regime change concepts. In the second...
Uprising in Libya: "The Al-Jazeera Effect"
Hanzal, Jaromír ; Nečas, Vlastimil (advisor) ; Bednařík, Petr (referee)
The bachelor thesis Uprising in Libya: "The Al-Jazeera Effect" uses a quantitative analysis to examine the relationship the Czech printed media has towards the Arab news network Al Jazeera. The preliminary theoretical part is divided into three sections. In the first section, the author presents Al Jazeera as an important actor in the regional and global television news market. The second section summarizes the findings about two interesting phenomenons that aren't unanimously accepted by academic literature - the so called "CNN effect" and the "Al Jazeera effect". The third section then reflects on the current quantitative research that deals with Al Jazeera's news coverage. The core of this thesis rests solely on the quantitative research. The author focused on key events that could be expected to increase the references to the Al Jazeera network. Therefore, the thesis examined two twelve month periods in which international news outlets informed of the events related to the terrorist attacks on the World Trade Center on September 11th 2001, and of the development of anti-regime uprisings in the Middle East and North Africa collectively labeled as the Arab Spring in 2011. The ten-year gap in between these two periods has given the author a chance to focus particularly on the change in the...
CEZ's affair from the point of view of Czech and Bulgarian press
Kraevská, Markéta ; Bednařík, Petr (advisor) ; Hanzal, Jaromír (referee)
The diploma thesis The CEZ affair from the perspective of the Czech and Bulgarian press deals with the media portrayal of the unrests in Bulgaria in February and March 2013, which were caused by the high prices for electricity that had been supplied, among others, by the parastatal Czech company CEZ. This company became a symbol of the protests. The basis for the analysis and comparison consists of the Czech dailies Mladá fronta Dnes, Právo, Hospodářské noviny and the Bulgarian dailies Trud, 24 chasa and Standart. The reference period is February 2013, when the protests began and subsequently culminated at the end of the month. This work aims to describe how the whole affair was depicted in selected examples of Czech and Bulgarian press. Subsequently, these two approaches are compared. In addition to the analysis, the thesis also touches the topic of modern history of Bulgaria and an outline of Czech-Bulgarian relations. The individual periodicals used for the analysis, as well as the energetical concept of Bulgaria are introduced in order to achieve easier understanding of the entire problem.
Citizen photojournalism and videojournalism on Czech news websites
Vilímová, Tereza ; Hanzal, Jaromír (advisor) ; Vochocová, Lenka (referee)
The master's thesis deals with the citizen photojournalism and the citizen videojournalism in the Czech media landscape. It focuses on the frequency of the amateur photographs and videos published on the selected news web sites and also on the gatekeeping process. This master's thesis also reflects the editor's opinions on the citizen photojournalism and the citizen videojournalism. The citizen journalism is usually viewed from the perspective of the citizen journalists, but this master's thesis brings the view from the second side, from the media professionals. The thesis uses the combination of the quantitative and qualitative methods. Firstly, there was conducted the quantitative content analysis. Secondly, there were interviewed the media professionals. The conclusions of the master's thesis indicate that the citizen photojournalism and the citizen videojournalism is rarely used on the Czech web sites. The media professionals evaluate this phenomenon positively, find its contributions to the news flow but only under the certain conditions. On the other hand, they do not find the citizen photojournalism and videojournalism absolutely necessary element for the news service.
